PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Let's keep our great discussion going!

LovesMysteries | 327 comments Maybe if you guys enjoy "Singing In The Shrouds" to the very end maybe at some later point we can discuss another Ngaio Marsh mystery, whether it be our main read or a side one.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Actually, maybe we can do a "classic cozy" thread, and then a contemporary/modern cozy thread. There are SO many to choose from. I'd love to read some Sayers also.

You're definitely in for a treat because Dorothy L. Sayer's has a great body of work. I would recommend the first mystery "Whose Body?" which is the first book in the Lord Peter Wimsey series.

Loved the Lord Peter Wimsey movie adaptations.

Nicole, several posts or threads ago I suggested The Parlor for cozies, The Den for edgier material and The Library for classic mysteries but left it open. We ran a few in The Den and as we now have a few more classic buffs, The Library thread would be well received. How's everyone feel about these add ons to The Mansion lol ? Note: there's no pressure. Just participate as you care to. We can still have our monthly main read and the rest will be add ons. Discuss away.

Nicole, if you'd like to start The Library thread for classic cozies and mysteries, feel free. LM was going to start a thread for The Theater. Gives us more "rooms" to visit and engage in. ;-)

I know this is a slight departure from our main read, but which of the Lord Peter Wimsey adaptations did you like the most -- the ones with Ian Carmichael or Edward Petheridge?

I remember when I was younger I tried to watch the ones with Carmichael but at that time I didn't care for those. Now since I'm a lot older and my tastes have changed, I'm going to give Carmichael another chance, after I read the stories in which he appears. I always loved the ones with Petheridge and it's a shame that the last book "Busman's Honeymoon" was never filmed or the short stories. A lot of die-hard Wimsey fans wished Gaudy Night was longer since the book was. But I think it's time for another actor to put on the monocle and play Wimsey and do all of the stories -- both the novels and the short stories. It's time for these great stories to be adapted once again, but only if they are faithful to the stories and not done with unnecessary liberties like the recent adaptations of Agatha Christie's stories.

H
I did like Petheridge a lot and also Ian C., but for different reasons. Like Harriet Vane...think her name was. And Lugg. I can't pick but I did love EP's debonair ways and intro to the series. Too short lived, unfortunately. Ian C did a splendid job as well and they gave us more episodes. I like the Club episode where they found the body In the booth. (I won't get specific as not to spoil). In the Petheridge I liked best the eppy where Miss Vane ended up in jail and the help he got from miss Whatsername at the office. Sorry, can't recall the titles. Perhaps we should have mystery movie time in The Parlor. Lol. I do miss our mystery movie discussions at the old place. We were able to mix books with film and it was great! Remember when we did the Poirot canon? I think you started that one, LM? those were the days.

I think we should start the mystery movie discussions again as well. We can (a) read a book and if there's a film adaptation we can watch it after and/or (b) we can just watch a movie adaptation of a mystery film without any attachment to the book.

I've been thinking about this for quite a while now. I definitely remember when we read the Poirot canon and mixed the books with the films. They were very good days, and we can bring those good days back to this forum!

I got another good idea under my sleeve. We can also listen to mystery radio dramas as well. I can post a link to a radio drama that we can listen to then discuss. It will bring something new to the forum and I'm always up for new things. How about it?

LOL rock the Casbah, LM. Maybe you could operate The Theater Room. We'll need to install one of those serious popcorn makers inside.

On a serious note, we'll have to space things delicately so all our books and movies etc. receive equal attention but I don't think that'll be a problem 'cause you don't rush the titles. All have ample time to join in.

So, yeah, if you'd like to start a Theater Room type of thread, that would be okay. Oh, I remember at the old place that we could either read the book, watch the movie adaptation or both. I kinda like giving us a choice for like myself, I may have time to watch the film but not read the book. Or if someone has the film but not the book or vice versa, they can still articipate.

Sounds great! I'm on it! :)

LovesMysteries | 327 comments I never read it (as I'm not much a fan of modern mysteries) but I remember hearing about "The Woman In Cabin 10" by Ruth Ware, a modern mystery book that came out not too long ago. One of the similarities is that both books take place on a boat. Has anyone ever read The Woman In Cabin 10?

message 16: by PugMom (last edited Jan 22, 2017 05:47AM) (new)

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments Yup, read it. Finished it in one sitting. Not that it was the best book I ever read but I just had to find out what was going on and knew I wouldn't get anything done that day if I had to put the book down before I finished it.

LovesMysteries | 327 comments I know that both books are different but which one do you find a tad better: Shrouds or Cabin 10?

Cabin 10 is on my TBR. I'll get to it eventually lol.

LovesMysteries | 327 comments So for whoever hasn't finished the book yet who do you think is the Flower Murderer?

I want to read Cabin 10 in the future but right now I'm in three books and more coming.

I cast my vote for Mr. Cuddy back in the opening thread. I noted my reasons for this pick. Don't want to spoil it for others as they may have different noms for different reasons. And I'm usually wrong. LOL

I've finished, so I know. I didn't guess, though. And by the way, I am all for the Theatre Room. I have lots of DVDS of our various mystery masters.

PugMom (nicoleg76) | 2014 comments I have no idea right now. I'll start the final discussion thread this week. I'm sure if I guessed I'd be wrong!

Great! Then I will proceed with The Theatre Room and hopefully soon we'll decide on a film to watch. I also thought about introducing BBC radio dramas (and I can provide the links to those for those who don't want to go out and buy them or for those who can't afford them) and we can listen to those and discuss as well.

Thanks, LM! You go, guy! Ordering pallets of popcorn for The Theater Room as we speak. Oils, salt, concession goodies. List your faves here. BTW, they are all free of calories, fat, bad stuff but have the full flavor of the real movie stuff. How's that for a mystery buff's dream come true?

As for the story, I was wondering about the sighting of Mrs. Blick's night time frolic. My impression is that "she" is not whom the observer thinks she is but someone either in drag having a thing or someone just plain ol' impersonating her for another reason. Like giving her an alibi for what I don't know. I'm leaning towards former. We shall see.

To avoid spoiling, I'll just say, I had a feeling that one would get it. Almost done. Can't wait to see whodunit!

I'll post the final thread! I wonder if anyone will guess the ending!

I hope to finish tonight or early tomorrow. Then I can get to the Death Takes/Holiday mystery. Been itching to tuck into that one for a while. ;-)
