So I enjoyed this section much more than the last. Hell, it's probably been the most enjoyable of the series for me. The travel to the land of the dead and back again was pretty interesting.

I felt really bad when she had to leave her demon. I wonder if they'll reunited. I wonder if Will will finally meet his own demon. His father managed to discover his demon, and now that Will's was separated from him, maybe it will keep an external appearance (assuming they find it)

Mrs. Coulter's storyline was pretty good too.

The only part that dragged for me was the scientist (Mary?) and the roller people. I just kept thinking of the Rollers from Return to OZ.

Except the Rollers scared the shit out of me.

I'm sure her story is going to relate to her "tempting" Lyra, but I just for it all very slow.

I hope the final section can keep my interest like this..

Suzanne | 1582 comments I liked this part more than the first too. BUT - I liked the roller people. I think I'm a sucker for first contact stories though. I thought of the roller people from Oz too lol.

It was an interesting view on the land of the dead. I know people were greatly offended by this series, and I've never been able to figure out why. But I loved that Lyra decided they needed to make a way out and that Will supported her. I thought it was good too that everyone felt the loss of a daemon - not just Lyra.

The idea of your death following you around your whole life was interesting too - I liked that.

Also, finally some consequences for lying! Finally! Ugh. That has to be my biggest issue with this series..Well that and all the religion bashing..

Suzanne | 1582 comments Oh yeah! I forgot about the harpy being mad about the lies. That was great. And Lyra was truly stunned - no idea what to say when she couldn't lie.

Jaime | 97 comments This section did pick up the pace and had a lot of character. Glad the story is becoming better for you Rob. :)

It was heartbreaking for Lyra to leave Pan behind. I was so upset that it happened. Though after Will talked to his father and found where their daemons would be, I felt reassured that they would be reunited (though if they aren't It might ruin the whole story for me). Also I'm worried that it seemed after all this ends Lyra and Will have have to be separated. Since his father said that a person could travel to other worlds but has to live in the world their daemon was born or else it would get sick and die. Maybe they could take turns visiting each other, but something about the tone made me think that won't be an option. Did anyone else think that?

Salmakia and Tialys grew on me. Really the whole land of the dead part was just well done. And when Roger disappeared happy it felt like a weight lifted.

Mrs Coulter did have a pretty good story line. Her love for Lyra is real and those mother instincts kicked in in a way I could finally root for. I really thought Lord Roke was pretty cool.

I agree with Rob that the mulefa parts drag a bit compared to the rest.

Overall looking forward to seeing how the story concludes.
Oh and awesome job with creating the sections. It was a perfect breaking point.

Suzanne | 1582 comments I'm glad the section breaks worked - it is harder to do when there aren't designated parts in the book.

Salmakia and Tialys grew on me too. I love the dragonfly mounts. And the whole short lived thing (only 8 years) is interesting and made me want to tell them to be careful!

Good point about the need for Will and Lyra to separate. I agree that maybe they can just alternate worlds though. Sometimes they both live in Lyra's world, and sometime they both live in Wills. His father wasn't specific about how long you can be away.

Maybe you just need to return periodically to recharge your battery so to speak.

Jaime | 97 comments I hope so. I would like a happy ending after all this heartbreaking stuff.

The dragonfly mounts were a cool idea.
