I remember reading this book when I was a kid, so probably 1985 or older. It is set in the 1920's or 1930's, probably in appalachia. A kid moves to town with his parents after they lived overseas. They really don't fit in. I think the mom is Buddhist? The father might have been an artist. There was a ghost in the story, I think the ghost was of another kid who had died of tetanus.
