I cannot possibly choose just one. XD It's like apples to oranges trying to decide between top books of each sub genre. Lots of good ones!
Malazan is the best series. Of the 8 books I read for Book of the Fallen these three are the best and it's impossible to choose one over the other.
Deadhouse Gates
Memories of Ice
The Bonehunters
Deadhouse Gates
Memories of Ice
The Bonehunters

Ok I really can't decide. I read Gardens of the moon, first two gentleman Bastards books, Morning Star, finished the Wheel of Time (those last 3 books holy shit), read Lightbringer, the Bands of Mourning, and A Gathering of Shadows, and and and....How can I choose!
In Fantasy I had two favourite books this year. Two earlier to tell if they will be favourite series or not.
Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson. Just a brilliant book and that world building blew my mind.
The Broken Eye by Brent Weeks. I can't say it was a favourite series yet with finding the last book less than stellar.

Ooooh that really is a tough choice.

My favourite series of the year is also Malazan. My top three are the same as Scott's, but I think after those three we start to differ in opinion.

After that for me it's:
Midnight Tides
Reaper's Gale
Gardens of the Moon
Toll the Hounds
House of Chains
Toll the Hounds has the best ending of any of the 8 books but the first 75% was a bit all over the place with stories not interlocking like we are used to.
House of Chains had the worst ending of the 8 books and it's not even close.

For Toll of the Hounds, I think I had a bit more hope because I saw you freaking out over the later chapters so I enjoyed the individual stories a lot more before they all connected.
House of Chains didn't have the greatest ending, but I think I liked the first half of the book a lot more than I liked some of the other beginnings.
Midnight Tides and Reaper's Gale just didn't have characters I was super interested in so that's why they fall to the bottom for me.

Midnight tides has the best prologue of the series, perhaps the best prologue ever and the ending is awesome. It did start slow and Bugg and some of the other characters I loved.
