Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments Can we talk about reviews? I mean ratings, the 5 Star rating system and what it means. It is very confusing sometimes to read a review and try to put it together with the stars they have given. I know we all base what we read in part or large part on the review/Star standard. Yet I see so many 5 star reveiws. So lets review stars:

1 Star: Didn't like it

2 Stars: It was so-so

3 Stars: I liked it

4 Stars: I really liked it

5 Stars: It was amazing!

By this standard not every book should get 5 Stars. Or even 4. If you just liked it that is 3 Stars. If you liked it a lot that is 4 Stars. If it is truly original, well written, really grabbed you and hung on, it was amazing. Any thoughts?

Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments Ok, the ratings I gave above are only for Goodreads. Apparently Amazon's Stars review is a bit different, which is interesting, right?

Amazon Star rating:

1 Star: Hated it

2 Stars: Didn't like it

3 Stars: It's okay

4 Stars: I like it

5 Stars: I loved it

So this is a discrepancy I did not know about. I guess I am the only one who cares. I guess we all have a basic feel about what we mean when we give a rating, right? Ok, then.

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments Donna, I follow the Amazon style of rating. The Goodreads rating system doesn't make much sense to me.

To be completely honest Donna, I never noticed the difference in the wording between the two. I guess I had a set feel in my mind as what I thought was what so read them to mean basically the same thing just worded differently because they were written by different people. For my blog I've defined my personal rating system as:

★★★★★ If I could give myself amnesia and re-experience the enthralling details of this book again for the first time every day, I would.

★★★★ This book was like good chocolate, but without the guilt.

★★★ This book was just fine. ("Just fine??? The fourth Harry Potter movie was just fine!!!" ~ Rajesh Kuthrapali, the Big Bang Theory). I enjoyed it while it lasted but won't be revisiting its pages anytime soon.

★★ This book wasn't my cup of tea. Take it or leave it fellow bibliophiles.

★ It took herculean willpower to reach the final punctuation mark.

I will never rate a book that I did not finish. They'll never appear on my blog.

To me, all of them are asking the same basic question: On a scale of 1 to 5, how much did you like/love this book?

(and sorry for the delayed input on this one. My computer and Goodreads have been at war as to whether I should receive notifications or not)
