There may be another way, but I never found it. So this is how I managed to insert my book cover image. I copied the suggested image htlm code presented in the '(some html is ok)' tag above the post text area and went through the following steps:

1. Go on your Goodsreads author page
2. Right click on the thumbnail image of the book cover you want to insert and select the show image in the contextual menu. You can also select 'copy image url'.
3. Copy the image's url appearing at the top of your browser
4. Paste it in the following htlm line where indicated:[image error]
5. Write your book title in the alt tag inside the above htlm line
6. Remove both width and height tags to avoid image distorsion
7. Paste the resulting line in the post text area where you want it to appear.
8. Click on the preview tag at the bottom of the post text area to see if it's ok.
9. Add any additional text you want.
10. Post your message.

Keep the line somewhere to re-use eventually.

I'm definitely going to pick up several of the books on this thread. To all of those who put out multiple books a year - wow, I'm so impressed. Got a long way to go. Does it get any easier with the more books you put out?"

Thankfully, since my book series started as a parody, I can mug Meyer's books and rifle through their pockets for spare plot points. But I've gotten so into my characters that things are actually diverging quite a lot.

I don't know how people churn out new books every three months. I just finished the rough draft of my sequel and the plot needs SO much structural help - I'm having to tear apart whole sections and put them back together so that the action and character arcs flow without too much sagging. Editing takes me months and months and even years. I am amazed by those who manage to get it all right - or nearly- on the first try.

So, that's the question- You are smart, CL, to take the time and fix issues. Maybe people rushing and putting out stories that are poorly edited or have holes in the plot, add to giving indies a bad reputation. So many sites won't even review indies, saying they don't like the lack of professionalism. I know both my son and I were guilty of that in the beginning and had to take back work to have it reedited.
He finished an adventure story as well as a sequel to one of his books recently. He slowed himself down by putting them away for three months and when he reread, found discrepancies as well as was able to deepen the plot. I think his books will be richer for it.

Welcome to the group A.C.

I noticed you are a hybrid. If you have a publisher, does he only take some of your books? Which do you like better? Can you share the pros and cons of traditional publishing.

A.C has a blog with great information for the indie community. https://acmelodyblog.wordpress.com/in...

Thanks, Carole! I'll try to answer your questions as succinctly as I can here...

I started out published through an e-pub, and had already signed contracts for a handful of series prior to trying my hand at self-publishing, so all the books to those series will have to go to my publisher - but, otherwise it's up to me which books I submit to them.

There are definite pros & cons. The largest pro is expense: not having to pay for editing, book covers and interior layout formatting. The cons are not having any control over the editing, book covers and interior formatting. I still have to pay for all of my own marketing and the worst, for me is Time & Price.

I signed my first contract in 2013 and my publisher has only released 1 book since. They are not due to release my next book until June of this year. That's a 4 year gap between publications. I also have no say over the cover price, which means I can never put my books up for sale, countdown deals or temporarily free - though I can give them away for free in promotional giveaways, like a rafflecopter.

I launched 3 self-published books in 2016 and though I've been fortunate to find extremely great resources for very low prices, it is rather expensive. Still, I like being able to work at my own pace, not publish a book until I feel it's ready (my publisher rushes through the editing process - another con) and by the same token, publish more frequently than once every 4 years.

I'm not saying all publishers are the same, I made the mistake of not researching my publisher before signing their contracts. I was just happy to get published. So, for any writers out there still looking to go the traditional route, I highly recommend thoroughly checking out a publisher before signing anything. Do they have any best selling authors? Do they market their authors? What kind of say or control will you maintain over your own work?

Those are some of the questions I wished I'd asked, but all and all I can't complain about having the experience from both sides. So, which do I like better? Definitely Indie! :)

Thank you for this opportunity to share my experience and for sharing my blog link!

Sincerely,
A.C.

This is so helpful You know, A.C. the grass always appears greener. (I would have italicized that, but I don't know how.) I can however, cut and paste, lol
"not having to pay for editing, book covers and interior layout formatting. "
Those are some mighty big expenses. I have resented paying for a lot of them. Sometimes it feels like the editing is never finished. With my son's books, It will take two to three edits. It adds up.

"not having any control over the editing, book covers and interior formatting. " I don't know how much I'd care about those things. But, and it's a big but, my youngest son does all that and he's pretty territorial about it. It's his way of contributing to our enterprises.

"They are not due to release my next book until June of this year. That's a 4 year gap between publications." That's just plain horrible. I'd be afraid people will forget about the momentum we've created. However, it could leave them greatly anticipating your next work. I know I follow certain authors and constantly look for updates on their next book. I get so excited sometimes I buy it multiple times by mistake in the preorder stage and end up with a collection of the same book.

"I also have no say over the cover price, which means I can never put my books up for sale, countdown deals or temporarily free - though I can give them away for free in promotional giveaways, like a rafflecopter. " I am of the Woolworth variety. I always argue keep the prices cheap and get your brand out there. This is hotly contested in our household and the is a big divide. My husband and younger son argue have some pride and don't be afraid to charge. Your books are worth it. Michael and I ascribe to the more insecure- sell 'em cheap and spread the word. Put them everywhere, anyway you can.
"I made the mistake of not researching my publisher before signing their contracts." WISE, WISE, WISE, advice. If it looks too good- you better your sister's, boyfriend's, cousin's uncle, the lawyer to read it and explain the fine print. I have used one of those online lawyer sites for 25 dollars and it saved us a lot of heartache.
Lastly, the big question, if you don't mind-which is the better payoff- or is there no difference?

Thanks so much for the post and good luck which every way you are publishing. BTW, all your covers are ravishing- so I think that was a win-win.

I want to know one thing- where do all those guys on the covers live?

Thank you Carole, I love my covers - and one of them is a DIY. If you find out the answer to that last question, I want to know, too! ;)

In my experience, self-publishing is the better payoff. I sold more copies of my Indie books in 3 months than I sold in a year of my one published book and I'm sure that has to do with being able to keep their cover prices low and include them in sales. Also, I use Kindle Select, so they're all free for Kindle Unlimited members and get a lot more exposure than my published book that way. So, even though the prices are cheaper, I've made more money in a shorter amount of time, but I've also put out more money on them.

To me, the payoff is in gaining a much larger readership than monetary. Having the ability to get my name out there more frequently and my Indie books sell internationally, whereas my published book has only sold in the US so far. I'm also hoping my Indie books will help boost my future published books a little better, because more people know who I am now thanks to my self-publishing.

I was on a roundtable for Kindle a while back and I met a romance author who was traditionally published. She was big enough for NY Times status and she told me she was usually paid six figures for a book. I was suitably star-stuck. I had read her books for years. She was there because she started writing indie with her husband- a Harry Potter kind of thing. She told me she wanted to keep hybrid as well. My guess was she couldn't sell the YA to her publisher. Anyway, she said pretty much the same thing you said, but she was also using her "star" status to help sell newer books, by cashing in on all the publicity they did for her.
I find now the big publishers are pushing back to regain the territory they lost with all the indies in the market. I also think, traditional writers got a little independent and can demand more for themselves now. The ball moved to their court. My son want to ge this books into the movies. Most production companies won't look at you unless you have a traditional publisher. (and you have to have a regular as well as a film agent.)

hummm....DIY- impressive. Looks like you have better do it yourself projects than me. All I get to do is make birdhouses.

KT | 3 comments Hi, I'm a new member and wife of first time author - I helped edit/proof-read the book. Neither of us are used to blogs/forums etc, so marketing of a first book is a bit tricky for us and outside our comfort zone.

The book is called "A Witch's Harvest" - here is a summary:
After their village Burymoss is destroyed by a fire started by the dreaded scarecrows and shrikes, and which also kills their grandmother, twins Jack and Sophie, with their friend Leo, set-off to trade their harvest in Turnside, a town controlled by Shrikes. They are joined by Leo’s father and the local gamekeeper his daughter, Joney and Anas, another local girl whose motives are unclear. Things go wrong and the group are separated and have to overcome many obstacles before finding their way back to Burymoss, including kidnapping and ultimately rescuing the Witch Queen. There are fights, disasters and triumphs along the way, and when they return to Burymoss, things have changed considerably.

I am surprised by how many books have the same name. Several of my son's books are like that. I remember when Brood X came out, he freaked because another one came out right behind him. He had a catch phrase after the title. Is it an Inspector Stone series book- you could add that if it is Written in Blood An Inspector Stone Book or something. The same goes for Nathan, if it is about a recurring character or plot.

Aislinn So far I've been lucky enough in my titles that they've been unique, but I know eventually I will have to choose one that's been used before. I'm not too worried about it. I didn't know it until I'd published it and then went looking for it on Amazon :( Fortunately mine is a series as well, and Written in Blood is technically the subtitle under the series title The Foley Chronicles: Files from the 8th District.
You may want to consider Caroles idea and add the Inspector Stone in somehow.
