Maryam | 9 comments Hi everybody. There was this book where a poor widow and her baby daughter (4 or so years old) are living in a cottage, which belongs to her dead husband's friend (the husband was not a good man and the friend isn't either.) and I think it's winter. The little girl lights a candle in the window at night so her dead father can find his way home. (she doesn't know her papa, as she calls him, was a bad man) At night man comes to their cottage and bangs the door and as soon as the widow opens the door he falls inside because of a head injury. The man has lost his memory and thinks the woman is his wife because the little girl keeps calling him papa. She goes to the church and nobody knows anything about the man. The man is very good with the little girl and the woman and fixes their roof and stuff like that. One day a man comes to the cottage and says that he is a friend of the injured man and he is a captain and he has a wife. The man goes with him, but returns later and says that his memory has come back and his friend just wanted to save him from a shrew gold digger and has lied that he has a wife. He is a lord or something(marquess or something like that) and they get married and The End! Can anybody tell me what was the title and author. It has been driving me up the walls. Thanks.
