Maggie. (cinderellalibertine) I can't decide between Murder on the Orient Express or Hidden Figures. I'm definitely not watching Murder with Johnny Depp in it, but Hidden Figures is also on my TBR.

message 52: by Taryn (new)

Taryn | 1 comments I'm reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children already, so this category is perfect motivation for me to get through it! (Having a little difficulty. :/)

(buries @ lj btw)

message 53: by Dessi (new)

Dessi | 15 comments I'm currently reading The Rosie Project, I know they're working on a film but it defo won't be ready for 2017. Also reading Lolita and hoping to get it over with it asap cos it's more gross than i expected...

Torn about which one of those to read! I've only read Sense of an Ending from the listed, don't remember anything about it other than it being a bit strange. Might give American Gods a go, as it is so different from the things i usually read.

message 54: by Leyla (new)

Leyla | 4 comments I already have big little lies so I'll probably read that!
I've been meaning to read lianne moriarty for ages but keep forgetting.
Technically I'm reading two other books right now so hopefully I can get them done before I start this one.
I always forget about my book challenges halfway through January bc of school but hopefully I get it right this year! lol

yes it will, Tejaswini!

message 56: by Jessie Rose (new)

Jessie Rose | 4 comments I'm going to re-read Murder on the Orient Express for January. My fav character from Christie is Poirot so I can't wait to read this again!

Hey everyone,

thank you for suggesting individual discussion threads. I already opened a couple in January, but if you're reading a book that doesn't already have a discussion thread, you can open one yourself. At the end of the month we'll have a January Wrap-Up and we can all exchange recs and talk about how our challenge went this month, whether we liked the books we picked, etc.

If anyone has more suggestions for the group, let us know!

If you don't know how to create a new topic for your book, I added it to the how to section, but if you have any questions about it please let us know!!!

I also created a new topic thread for Annihilation if anyone else is going to read that too :)

message 59: by Rozalina (new)

Rozalina (rozalinaa) | 25 comments I'm going to start listening to Annihilation and American Gods on audiobook (I keep plugging this- but download the "Hoopla" app if it's available through your library. So many audiobooks guys).

I've owned An Ember in the Ashes for a year now, I guess I'll read that after I finish "Illuminae."

message 60: by May (new)

May | 1 comments Buzzfeed published this today: https://www.buzzfeed.com/ariellecalde...

I'm thinking of doing Tulip Fever!

(I'm rachphan on ONTD. I do a lot of lurking and very minimal posting.)

message 61: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I'm going to go with The Handmaid's Tale, despite how depressing I know it's going to be. I've been meaning to read it for awhile now, and Amazon has the kindle book for only $2.99, so I guess it's meant to be.

message 62: by Keisha (new)

Keisha (silverchandelier) | 2 comments I've already read it but I wanted to read it again "The Disaster Artist" since the movie is supposed to come out this year

message 63: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (patriciaromanopage) | 1 comments I am in the middle of Tony and Susan which is already out as Nocturnal Animals. It is okaaay, so far.

message 64: by Courtney (last edited Jan 05, 2017 03:30PM) (new)

(winterlace on ONTD btw)

OMG, there's a new adaptation of picnic at hanging rock coming out?! i LOVE the movie, wow. I don't think I ever knew there was a book... omfg!

Yeah dude! They're doing 6x60min eps apparently! It's big news locally for me because I live down the road from Hanging Rock.

Make sure to get ahold of a copy of the book with the additional chapter added. It was published after Joan Lindsay died so most of the earlier copies don't have it. :)

message 67: by Booksen (new)

Booksen | 2 comments I think I'm finally gonna read The Cuckoo's Calling. I don't know why I haven't tbh! The adaptation also looks pretty great.

message 68: by Lea (new)

Lea (coddington) | 5 comments I think I'll move up Hidden Figures from my queue since I got a copy for xmas anyway. idk how i missed the adaptation announcement tbh.

(haven't used my lj in years but this challenge totes piqued my interest. tysm for organizing it!)

message 69: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexisshea) | 12 comments I'm so late! I'm reading Big Little Lies

message 70: by jayympea (new)

jayympea (lyricalharmony) Late also but I think I'm gonna read American Gods since it's already on my kindle and I keep starting it and never finishing it.

message 71: by Erika (new)

Erika | 1 comments Going to try for Hidden Figures or Station Eleven! Visiting my library today! (missslet on ONTD) :)

message 72: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (angolmois) I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale.

( my ontd username is kiseuk )

message 73: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Collins I just read Jumanji. Cute book, really enjoyed the first movie.
I want to read Hidden Figures as well.

message 74: by K. (new)

K. (aoutranc3) Just grabbed Annihilation from the library. Going to start it as soon as I finish my current book (either today or tomorrow). Looking forward to it!

I'm gonna read that one too, but I'm waiting for my library copy to come in! There is a thread up for that book in the January folder, and I plan on posting in there as i'm reading it, so please join me if you want to! :)

message 76: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (chnopf) | 4 comments I recently got 'We have always lived in the castle' because I didn't own a copy anymore and wanted to re-read that for a while, so I guess that fits.

Also have had American Gods and the Handmaiden's Tale on my bookcase for ages, so I might pick one of these up if I have time.

message 77: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (vehiclesshockme) | 78 comments I've never actually used a Goodreads group before, I normally just track my own reading progress, so I'm hoping I don't fuck this up. It sounded kind of interesting though so I'm willing to give it a try. I'm going to attempt The Mountain Between Us since it's not something that I would typically read.

Also username is vehiclesshockme

Kelly, so nice that you decided to join us!

So sraxe today told me that we could make custom reading challenges for groups, and it's actually pretty nifty. You just go here:

https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/...

then add the number of books in the challenge (12) and name a shelf for the challenge. And then it looks all nice and organized!

I chose Big Little Lies for this month, but disaster-romance seems like something I'd like. Looking forward to seeing what you think!

message 80: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Bea (gekrepten) | 327 comments Mod
oh yeah, I was gonna suggest to you that we make an official group reading challenge! I'm gonna add a how to add a shelf in the good reads how to thread, just in case anyone needs it!

message 81: by Knobby (last edited Jan 06, 2017 05:42PM) (new)

Knobby (knobbyknees) | 13 comments I put in a hold for Hidden Figures at my library but I'm like #44 in line so I probably won't get it in January (though I still want to read it!) so I'm going to go with The Circle, which is already on my to-read list and it's available now :)

I'm currently reading Stories of Your Life and Others which was adapted into Arrival but I guess it doesn't count because that movie came out in 2016 :P

message 82: by kirsten (new)

kirsten (messyshelves) | 24 comments I'm waffling but I might end up actually reading Live By Night. I'm in the mood for something period, and I read it while playing electro-swing and sipping wine (pretending I'm classy).

Depending on fast I read this I might read something else as well because why not?

message 83: by Cecil (new)

Cecil | 24 comments I've been meaning to read Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle for awhile now so I guess this is my excuse to finally do it.

((xaaaci on ONTD. Haven't been posting lately, but figured I'd jump on this.))

message 84: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (brittunculi) | 7 comments I originally thought I'd cracked it with the bell jar seeing as I already had the book but hadn't read it but then I realised that's out in 20-bloody-18 so I'm back to the drawing board because I'm too indecisive!

message 85: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (lapetite) | 58 comments After checking out Buzzfeed's list, I'm going with Everything, Everything because I already have a copy.

I'm lapetite on ONTD :)

message 86: by Alex (new)

Alex Cruse (lexification03) | 1 comments I just started "Call Me By Your Name" by Andre Aciman which should be debuting at Sundance!

message 87: by Katie (new)

Katie (littlelistmaker) I'll be reading "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson.

Also, it's littlelistmaker!

message 88: by Sasha (new)

Sasha | 104 comments Ooo thanks for the personalizing the book challenge link!

I'm hold 2 for Hidden Figures, but library is estimating 42 days, so that will not get me in time for January. :/

I've read A Wrinkle in Time but did not understand wth was going on as a kid, so maybe I'll reread that.

I never finished A Series of Unfortunate Events either. Hmm! So hard to pick!

message 89: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexisshea) | 12 comments I need to add all of these books you're mentioning to my own reading list! I'm aiming to read 24 books total this year

message 90: by Knobby (new)

Knobby (knobbyknees) | 13 comments Hey y'all, Hidden Figures is $1.99 on Kindle today. I won't link to the amazon page because it might be frowned upon or whatever, but for those of you who were on the waiting list at the library and wouldn't get it in this month, this is good news, right?? :) Happy reading!

message 91: by Despina (new)

Despina Karras (despinakarras) | 13 comments Hi everyone! I'm basically an avid lurker on ONTD (Stormi). I love this idea for the group, so thanks for putting it together!

I got on the wait list Hidden Figures, The Circle, and Wonder. I REALLY wanted to read Hidden Figures and was bummed to see I'm #67 on the wait list, so THANK YOU Elissa for letting us know it's on sale! I'm still going to read the others when they become available, but I'm really excited about Hidden Figures.

Thanks for sharing! I found it at my library but I'm tempted to get the kindle version so I can read it on my computer.

message 93: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (jalana1) For those like me who are still looking for a book, here's another list of add'l good books being made into movies this year from The Guardian: https://goo.gl/f1sJ3O. Thinking of starting The Dark Tower series from Stephen King, I've never read anything of his...

This weekend I tried reading Infinity and while I get that the protagonist is a 14 year old boy, it felt like it was written by an actual 14 year old. The writing was TERRIBLE. I got past the first few chpts and gave up. Then I tried The Handmaid's Tale & had to give up b/c it was beautifully written but too slow and plodding and I got tired of being within the protagonist's head SO much w/o anything happening (I get that that's her life, she basically spends 22hrs/day doing absolutely nothing, but it became overkill for me). Ended up reading the plot summary on wikipedia and am extremely happy I didn't finish.

message 94: by Knobby (new)

Knobby (knobbyknees) | 13 comments Happy to help, Despina and Kat :) I was excited to see it on sale!! I bought it too.

message 95: by IMY (new)

IMY Welp. Looks like I'll be reading The Invisible Man for January. Everything else (Hidden Figures, Handmaid's Tale & Murder on the Orient Express) was too long a wait list with the library.

Handmaid's Tale has been out for years and years... you might luck out with an old version of the book in a used-book store?

message 97: by Z (new)

Z (ladybellatrix) I found this list here sorry it someone's already posted it, but it has The Bell Jar on it and I've been meaning to read that for yonks, so 2 birds 1 stone methinks.

So is Murder on the Orient Express! I thought I was safe with that choice. Anyway I do not ready physical books anymore, only ebooks. So I'll stick with my choice. I like that its forcing me to make choices I would never read otherwise.

message 100: by R. (new)

R. (voronaya) | 7 comments Welp, I started The Long Home and had to quit after 120 pages of Charles-Frazier-esque Backwoods-Country Lyric Prose with no plot or characters to hook me or energy to propel me forward.

So scratch that, and onto My Cousin Rachel!
