Louise | 590 comments Now that we're a larger group, and it's the start of a fresh year, this seems like the time to implement something I have always wanted to do with this group: a second group-selected group read!

In addition to our general/themed read each month, we will be introducing a 'Read Around the World' group read, based on the read around the world challenge here.

This is one of my absolute favourite challenges, and I'm looking forward to running it as a group read, because it broadens reading horizons in terms of culture as well as gender and has led me to some fascinating books I might not have discovered otherwise.

It's going to start in February and, at least initially, run every two months. As there are six populated continents in the world, that means one book from each continent will feature as a group read in 2017.

For newbies to the challenge, this will hopefully provide a little boost to get started, and for experienced read-around-the-worlders, a place to recommend books you've enjoyed or read new ones alongside the rest of us.

Elizabeth (Alaska) What country for February?

Shomeret | 341 comments Since I tend to have review commitments, I would like to be able to opt in to the international group read when I have the time without participating in the around the world challenge.

You can always opt into/out of the group read as your reading schedule allows. I'm fairly certain you are not required to participate in any of the group challenges, nor obligate yourself to read any of the group reads.

Louise | 590 comments As Elizabeth says, participation in both the group reads and the group challenges is entirely optional. You can join one, both, or neither, dip in and out of them when they catch your fancy, whatever you like.

Even the mods aren't obliged to read books or take part in challenges they don't want to!

A new folder for Read Around the World has now been set up with both a general about thread, and the first nomination thread.

Bonnie So- if I download the map, do I tick of countries I want to read from the next year- or is it blank until I read one?

Hi Bonnie,
We just tick the countries off as we read them. Once you copy and paste your map in a post, you should be able to access your same map by clicking on the link that gets posted right below it in order to access and edit it easily as you read more books.

Stef Rozitis | 16 comments I can;t seem to add books to my read around the world shelf :(

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) | 1504 comments You know, my shelf has suddenly changed as well and it is only counting 2/16 books. Idk what is going on

Louise | 590 comments It's a Goodreads bug. A very annoying one.

This sounds like the same bug that caused me to quit the around the world challenge.

Stef Rozitis | 16 comments :( also my read women shelf only registers 10 now. I have read a lot more than 10 TYVM (well ok only 14 but still!)

Louise | 590 comments I haven't yet had a problem with the read women challenge. Are all the books you've read for the challenge on your shelf with a read date from this year?

However, as mentioned, there is a goodreads bug with group challenges at the moment and it is definitely affecting the Read Around the World Challenge (I've read 22, it tells me I've read 11, it shows 4), so it could be the same bug is now affecting the Read Women Challenge too.

Unfortunately, as this is a problem on goodreads end there is absolutely nothing I can do to fix it. The do know about the bug though (Bug report thread here) and are apparently trying to fix it. In the meantime we've just got to twiddle our thumbs.

We survived before widgets existed. I suspect this group of talented readers can overcome the glitch. :). Thanks for everything you do, Louise.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I think it might be affected by rereads. I'm not having a problem, but I don't reread. I don't know if that is the difference or not.

message 16: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 853 comments I'm having a problem because it is posting some of the books i've read as re-reads when they're not. It doesn't do it all the time, but did it again yesterday, and it took me a while to figure out a way of getting around it. Maybe I'm just not doing it correctly.
I just fill in the date when I finished reading the book. But then it sometimes lists it as a re-read when it's not. Is there a different way of doing this so it doesn't come up as a re-read?

message 17: by Louise, Group Founder (new)

Louise | 590 comments You should be able to edit your read dates (and delete any mysterious extra ones) from when you edit your review.

thanks. I'll give it a try next time. I'm still trying to figure my way around the system.

message 19: by Karin (new)

Karin I have to update mine. However, I have to recheck the rules. I just read one that involved many countries, and that can't really work, I'm sure.

Louise | 590 comments Good news, everybody! The challenge bug seems to have been fixed (for me at least). For anyone still having problems I suggest posting here to bring it to goodreads' attention.
