His reasoning is that they need to learn how to deal with situations without needing to call on their eldest brother. However he'll still come to their aid if he feels he should, they're not up to the challenge or they are in grave danger. He is often frustrated by his sister's views on life and tries to encourage her to follow her own path, not one she was brainwashed into believing.
