Craig Johnson's Longmire series springs to mind, but there are lots of sheriff books out there, both fiction and nonfiction. What will you pick?

Has anybody here already read Wool Omnibus? I've read the first three parts (stories? novelettes?), and they all revolve around the office of the sheriff, if not any particular holder of that office, so I'm wondering if that holds true for the entire 5-part arc.

Xanthi (libertine101) I think I'm going to struggle with this one.

Mary Arkless | 153 comments Wyatt Earp by Matt Braun Although Wyatt Earp didn't become sheriff (I was quite disappointed to learn), his running for sheriff of Cochise County was the main cause of what happened in this telling of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Also, one of his key opponents throughout was the Sheriff Behan. Earp was running against Behan to become sheriff, was a US Marshall during this story, and had been a lawman before these events.

This is based on the facts of Wyatt Earp's life, but is a fictional story. My main complaint with this book is that women are only there to throw themselves at the men in their lives to make wild love to them, look pretty on the men's arms, or nurse them back to good health after a shootout.

That's a shame about the treatment of women in the story. This reminds me, somewhere I have a nonfiction book that has to do with law enforcement in the Wild West. I'll have to find it and see if it qualifies for this prompt.

It was certainly disappointing.

Xanthi (libertine101) This was going to be a tough one for me. I ended up reading Haunted by Kay Hooper. Its not quite ABOUT a sheriff but there is one who is central to the story, so I am counting it.

Kiddie-lit to the rescue! I read Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads.
