Sometimes a short list is better as large can be overwhelming.

Of course, I do not need to add to my TBR and both of those are begging to go on it.

The Leavers does look like it could have potential. I have one friend who's read it and gave it four stars and 5 more with it on their TBR - hopefully more feedback will be coming.

Confessions gives me chills. I'm going to peruse the others. I sometimes don't click with Japanese fiction...not sure why. I going to keep trying.

I'm waiting for a little more feedback and also until the PBT challenge is over. I'm giving that a try and there a few that I really want to read- my top picks.

I'm like that with Nigerian literature. The stories always sound good but I almost always give up by page 50. Not sure why either but don't think I'll try any more.

I don't have an affinity for Japanese literature either. I never made a decision to avoid it but I think it's less likely that I'll add a book to my TBR. That said, I haven't gotten to the list of Japanese thriller.

I can't say that I have an opinion on Nigerian literature. I've only recently started breaking down my lists by country rather than continent so I'm impressed, Story, that you have an opinion. I didn't care for the Adichie I read and have Born on a Tuesday on the TBR. Perhaps I should go back to my list of books tagged Africa and see how they break down.

message 70: by Denizen (new)

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments Saints for All Occasions was on one of the above lists but is a book I decided to pass on. It is the Washington Posts June book club selection. Their review definitely appeals to me.

"“Saints for All Occasions,” the new novel by J. Courtney Sullivan, is so unassuming that its artistry looks practically invisible. In fact, from the outside, nothing about this story seems noteworthy: Irish Catholics settle in Boston; they drink too much; they struggle with the church; they gather for a loved one’s wake.

That sounds as fresh as a pint of last week’s Guinness.

Which makes this quiet masterpiece all the more impressive. In a simple style that never commits a flutter of extravagance, Sullivan draws us into the lives of the Raffertys and, in the rare miracle of fiction, makes us care about them as if they were our own family."

I'll have to get back to the longer list, also, but did find a possible gem on the short one Golden Hill with a great review by our very own Storyheart.

I have had a hold on Borne for quite some time. I like the description and fell in love with the cover Borne by Jeff VanderMeer .

I did enjoy that one. It's on my 'best of 2017 so far' list along with
Autumn
Baba Dunja's Last Love
Exit West
Consider This, Senora

If you read Borne, let me know how it is. I was underwhelmed by his Annihilation, maybe because I'd heard so many raves about it that I was expecting more.

BnB, I agree...that longer list is proving dangerous. And it's only part one...they'll post the 2nd later.

Exit West and Consider This, Senora is on my best of 2017 list as well. I have a feeling that it is going to be hard to whittle that list down this year, which is a good thing.

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/b/ref=pe_1...

The list has many titles I'd heard about before and several new ones. Some like The Weight of Ink are already on Crossroaders' TBR. (I wasn't surprised to see Story and Judith already had it on their TBR.) Standard Deviation
and The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley also pique my interest.
