Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I have put some creative writing on Goodreads.

If anyone wants to read it just let me know and I will post a link.

You can be my test readers.
If you were ever a fan of the Carpenters, you might enjoy it.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Does someone REALLY like Martin Luther King? Just looked at the bookshelf on here and its all about him. Is someone in the group reading every single biography on him?

(I haven't read any).

It was me, Selina. Here in America we have a holiday in January called Martin Luther King, Jr Day. He did a lot here for race relations in the 60's and I was feeling very patriotic that day so a added a bunch of books about him. In a couple of weeks we have a holiday called Presidents Day. I think I will add a bunch of books about presidents. No, I haven't read them all. Feel free to add books about people from your country. I don't feel that we need to have read a book to add it to our group shelf. I feel the group shelf should be for informational purposes also.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Oh ok! Well which one would you recommend a foreigner read...?
See I haven't read any books by Donald Trump I know he's written a few.

message 9: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Well I have read a biography of Prime Minister John Key but it was really boring.

Also there was one of Helen Clark, but again, politics is kinda boring.

What is interesting is finding out how they grew up though and what they were into BEFORE they got involved with politics.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I have a rant, sorry to overtake the chit chat board with my posts...
its just, do you ever have friends that just don't read books and its annoying that they don't ever read anything, just watch tv and want to talk about that.

I have a few, and just realise they are kinda boring to hang out with and really have nothing interesting to talk about. I mean, I then end up talking alot about a fascinating subject and all they are contributing is ...nothing.

I had this one friend and she KNOWS I'm a trained librarian yet the only time she's in the library she doesn't even take out any books. Just goes on the computer. Great support friend! Its people like you that are the reason why librarians aren't being employed. aargh!

message 12: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments haha the book club I joined a few years ago devolved into people playing boardgames. I opted out.

I know what you mean, Selina. Very irritating when people start going into detail about what they watched on TV. I never really find people with common interests in books. I don't really know anyone that has the same interest in nonfiction. Even my librarian friend says she can tell without looking if a book for me has come in. I'm the only one that orders nonfiction and specifically bio and true crime. Thankful for my friends here on Goodreads who I can chat about books.

I didn't read any of the Martin Luther King books, Selina. Just thought they would look pretty on our shelf. You don't have to have read a book to post it on the group shelf, as far as I am concerned.

Fishface | 2014 comments I am thrilled to have finally found a photo of Kenny Myers online. It was attached in some unclear way to a timeline of the abduction and murder of a boy who lived in the town where I now live; they were victims of the same sex killer. (I say it's unclear because although Google I images said the photo was found on the timeline page, it wasn't there.) I actually found a second photo, showing his parents holding the first photo, and suddenly I learned why Kenny's case is almost forgotten. Kenny appears to be "less dead" than his co-victim Shawn Moore because his parents are of 2 different races. That was extremely taboo, virtually unheard-of, in metro Detroit at the time Kenny was born. Shawn, being pure Wonderbread, is mourned all over the Web.

I think any crime book written regarding Jack the Ripper would be a great start. It is even more intriguing that they never concluded who was responsible - chilling accounts to say the least!

Oh my gosh, where would I even start! I would highly recommend Gregg Olsen and Kathryn Casey. Ann Rule is probably one of the best known. I would think almost any library would have Ann Rule. In Cold Blood and Helter Skelter are two TC books that have stood the test of time.

message 25: by Fishface (last edited Feb 24, 2017 05:17PM) (new)

Fishface | 2014 comments Any library that doesn't have In Cold Blood and Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders probably needs to be quietly closed down.

Other TC suggestions:
Abandoned Prayers: The Incredible True Story of Murder, Obsession and Amish Secrets, Greg Olsen
The Shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer, Brian Masters
Charlatan: America's Most Dangerous Huckster, the Man Who Pursued Him, and the Age of Flimflam, Pope Brock

All the titles above are 5-star, best-of-the-best TC reads.

My favorite fictional crime reads:
Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution, Stephen Knight
Dearest, Peter Loughran
Frenzy, also found under the title "Goodbye Picadilly, Farewell Leister Square," by Arthur LaBern (basis of the Hitchcock movie FRENZY)
Loves Music, Loves to Dance, Mary Higgins Clark
Razor's Song, Joe Monninger
or you could go with the classic Oliver Twist!

Bio:
Not Lost Forever: My Story of Survival, Carmina Salcido
Beyond Survival, Theresa Saldana
Final Truth: The Autobiography of Mass Murderer/Serial Killer Donald "Pee Wee" Gaskins -- if you think you can take it!
Marnie by Winston Graham -- again, the basis of the Hitchcock movie of the same name

Julie (julielill) | 1674 comments Well, the Oscars were certainly entertaining last night. Don't think people will ever forget the ending! Certainly to be a trivia question for years to come!

message 29: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments What happened?
Sorry I don't follow the Oscars...

Fishface... surely you only mean libraries in USA.
I think I gave my copy of In Cold Blood away and never come across Manson Murders. But I DID read about them in the Beach Boy's memoir.
One of the Beach Boys was acquainted with the Mansons.

message 30: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 2014 comments You read Surfin' with Satan: The Strange Case of Charlie Manson and the Beach Boys??? That book is extremely difficult to afford in this country. Unless you're thinking of a different title?

message 31: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Uh, no, I read Good Vibrations: My Life as a Beach Boy by Mike Love which mentions one of the band members (forget his name) and his relationship with the Mansons. Mike Love wrote that he got one of them to babysit his niece or something.

Winter has returned just when we thought spring was here. We are having a snow storm today so keeping warm and cozy indoors today. Wish I had a fire place!

Did everyone spring forward? (Turn the clocks ahead). Question: I'm sure some of you don't have this Daylight Savings time thing but if you do, do you like it or would you rather it stay the same all year?

Would be a lot simpler to bypass the spring forward and fall back!

message 42: by Julie (new)

Julie (julielill) | 1674 comments We have sprung back and we got snow too and it is all my fault. I was cleaning and put away my snow boots. We have hardly have had any snow this winter and it was in the 60's/70s last week.

I don't see any reason not to keep it the same all year round. I learned from a fellow college student that they have only one time zone in China, reaching from here to there. They make that work!

Selina, you never know who's interested until you put it out there and see. Remember how many rejection slips Alex Haley got before he published Roots: The Saga of an American Family, one of the biggest runaway bestsellers ever! All those publishers must have been kicking themselves when they realized they turned it down!

message 50: by Julie (new)

Julie (julielill) | 1674 comments I would prefer to stay the same time year round. It is a pain to change all the clocks and one hour does not make that big of a difference.
