I really like that series, just wish the books were easier to find.

It is the autobiography of a nurse from New Zealand who married a journalist from Solomon Islands. I read it while visiting friends in the country.

Alice | 756 comments I finished James James by Percival Everett by Percival Everett. It gets 4.5 review here, but it was just okay for me. The book is a redo of Huck Finn from Jim's point of view. I read Huck Finn as a freshman in high school 48 years ago. I may have liked it better if I remembered more about the original story.

Zermeena | 725 comments I listened to All Systems Red All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries, #1) by Martha Wells . It took a bit to get into the story and I didn't realized how short it was. Now I'm stuck on the wait list in Libby for the next book!

I also listened to Big Damn Hero Big Damn Hero (Firefly, #1) by James Lovegrove . I learned about these books based on the TV show Firefly recently. The show was sadly only one season plus a movie. I highly recommend the books if you loved the series.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments Sinfully His (Gilded Decadence #6) by Zoe Blake
Sinfully His by Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley (aka Blake Hensley)

I believe this is the last book in the Gilded Decadence series. The series started out under the "Blake Hensley" pen name, then was reissued with new titles under the the two authors' names (Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley). I reviewed the first two books and am deciding whether to review the other four (I keep notes.)

Overall I enjoyed the books, but it was mainly because of the heroines. The "heroes" are pretty much alpha a-holes as the stories begin. They are redeemed by the women--at least the way I see the stories unfolding. These are "darker" romances and I had some issues with certain things that happened in a couple of the stories. And, I don't know if it was having dual authorship--I don't know how the authors shared the writing, etc.--but there were inconsistencies that just angered me (e.g., one H--and I use the moniker loosely--spends multi chapters using his ward, controlling her monies, her actions, etc. then can't believe she doesn't know he loves her. Really... you've spent chapters telling her--and readers--that she's of no use other than the money and giving him more children and you don't understand?)

Again... overall I enjoyed the series, not so much because of the Alpha A-holes, but because of the women who turned out to be stronger, and in some cases smarter, than the men who didn't set out with the best intentions.

Alice | 756 comments I finished Witchcraft for Wayward Girls Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix by Grady Hendrix. HIs books are unusual. This book deals with pregnant teens in 1970 who get sent away by their families to have their babies. Does a good job showing morals of the time. Some witchcraft mixed in and very interesting ending.
