Barbara Sousa | 504 comments I just finished listening to This Was a Man by Jeffrey Archer. It is the last book in the Clifton Chronicles. I must say that I have enjoyed the series tremendously and am sad to say goodbye to my literary friends. Jeffrey Archer is probably one of the best pure storytellers around!

I finished Fettered which turned out to be much more than a romance. The brother of one of the main characters has been accused of rape and that impacts the whole book.

Rebecca (mamanyt) | 129 comments If you haven't branched out into her other series, do. ALL of them are fun. I'd save the "Midnight, Texas" series for last, as several characters from several previous series make an appearance, and it's fun knowing who they are!

Are you planning on watching the Midnight, Texas TV show? It starts on the 24th on NBC. It probably won't be much like the books, like True Blood, but plan on checking it out anyway. I didn't care much for her non-supernatural books.

message 156: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (mamanyt) | 129 comments Wow...thanks for the headsup! I still had it down for the original July 25th! Yes, I do plan to watch it, although I'm not expecting much. I'll give it two episodes before I make a decision to follow it or not. Network tv (and most premiums) do a poor job with series. I was SO disappointed in True Blood! I wish STARZ was doing them all. They do a terrific book-to-movie job.

I actually like the Aurora Teagarden series. AND the Lily Bard series. AND the Harper Connelly, although that last one is supernatural-ish. AND Lily Bard shows up in the Sookie Stackhouse books, too. And a BUNCH of people show up in the Midnight Texas books.

message 157: by C-shaw (new)

C-shaw I love the Aurora Teagarden series too, and have liked the Sookie Stackhouse books from the time they were first published, though the "True Blood" TV show got crazy and I had to quit watching it. Haven't read "Midnight, Texas." Wow, Ms. Harris is mighty prolific. I will look for that series.

The Lily Bard books were okay, but the Aurora Teagarden books never grabbed me. Read 2 of the 4 Harper Connelly books and never felt compelled to read the other 2.

I actually liked True Blood, though it did get really weird. You just had to separate the two as a TV show and a book series that just happened to have characters with the same names. I thought it was cute the way she brought Lily into the Sookie books. Also, enjoyed seeing some of the Sookie characters show up in Midnight, too.

If I remember correctly, Lily Bard may have shown up in one of the Midnight books, as well. And I THINK I remember at least a reference to Harper Connelly.

Catherine (DragonQueen6) | 5 comments The House on Tradd Street by Karen White I am taking a moment to breathe after the last cozy I read. I am now engrossed in Karen White's House on Tradd Street. So much of Charleston from another author. I like how it clearly will be a Romance. Yet there is a ghost story going on. It reminds me of reading a cozy.

I do love me a good romance with a ghost story! YEARS ago I read a book called "Ammie Come Home." I may have to track it down and read it again.

The first book in the trilogy is the best the two that followed were OK...since i'm from SF I loved the books when I read them years ago

I also liked The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove (Pine Cove, #2)

Reading Behold the Dreamers: A Novel by Imbolo Mbue. I'm drawn into this story of immigrants struggling to make it in America.

Mbue spoke at an author talk I went to last month. Turns out she lost her job, was job hunting (unsuccessfully) and after an interview happened to walk past a group of chauffeurs waiting at the curb for their affluent employers. Now she's a best-selling author!

Mary - That's very impressive! I've read some of the Oprah book picks but I have a shelf full of others that are in my TBR.

I just heard Behold the Dreamers: A Novel was the new Oprah choice. The author must be over the moon! The job loss that led her to write this book turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Nell,

I don't think she will be worried about finding another job now that Oprah picked her new book for the Book Club. I think she will be on easy street from now on. Oprah usually makes the authors wealthy when they get a book on her lists. Be on the look out for it to be a movie or on TV!

It will be. The author sold the movie rights to Behold the Dreamers: A Novel before it became an Oprah pick. I learned that at the author talk last month. She was asked who she'd like to see playing the MC roles but declined to offer any suggestions.

The book focuses on the experience of immigrants at a time when that's a hot topic in America. It was already a bestseller but now sales will skyrocket!
