Alice | 756 comments I am reading Portrait of Peril Portrait of Peril (Victorian Mystery #5) by Laura Joh Rowland by Larua Joh Rowland. This book is set in 1890 England. Book 4 of the series. There is much discussion of ghost and spritualism, along with the saga of Sarah's father. It is a good series but I like her Sano Ichiro series better.

Set in 1900 Newport, RI. I have always enjoyed this Gilded Age series. Ms. Maxwell has grown our main character, Emma, very well over the previous book. Look forward to the next book. Start with book one with this series you would be bit lost otherwise.

Zermeena | 725 comments I listened to The Postman Always Rings Twice The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain narrated by Stanley Tucci. It was very intense!

I also listen to A Rip Through Time A Rip Through Time (A Rip Through Time, #1) by Kelley Armstrong for the 52 Book Club Challenge. It had an interesting premise but the ending was weak and felt like a set up for a sequel. Which of course it was. I have a problem with time travel books that acknowledge the hazards of time travel and then promptly ignore those hazards. SIGH! Setting that aside, the book was very enjoyable and I plan to read the sequel.

Karen (xkamx) | 580 comments I recently finished two books by Olivia Sinclair connected in an interesting way.

I first read Deal with the Devil, which started its life as a bonus "excerpt" for readers of Sinclair's book Busted (which I read right after).

In Busted, the hero, Aiden, finds out he's been the model of a romance author's books -- more than 20 at the time. His sister, Linda, loves the author and happened across a old version of one of the books that mentions the hero having a very unusual tattoo, exactly like her brother's and in the same location. After looking at a few other books, she encourages him to read the books. He figures out who's hiding behind the pseudonym "Darla Simone" -- busted!

Olivia Sinclair provided a bonus for readers of Busted, a three-page "excerpt" of the "Darla Simone" book, Deal with the Devil containing the scene with Aiden's tattoo. Fans wanted the whole story so Sinclair started posting it as a serial. Deal with the Devil is that serial compiled and edited for consistency.

So, technically, Deal with the Devil is a rom-com by fictional author Darla Simone as penned by Olivia Sinclair, author of Busted, wherein "Darla Siomone" is, well, busted.

Both books are enjoyable reads, but lacking.

Games and Rituals Stories by Katherine Heiny
I just finished this book of short stories which i enjoyed throughly. I'm not one that gravitates towards short stories as a rule so giving this 5 stars says something.

I've also read 2 other books this author wrote which i also gave high ratings. Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny Standard Deviation is a favorite that I've read twice.

I love Dresden too. Although I liked the original Harry Potter crossed with Sherlock Holmes premise better than the later super wizard format.

I read this in two days. This much awaited finale to the Tales of a New World series was great. Like a lot of P.C. Cast books, it is labeled YA but is enjoyable for fantasy fans of all ages.

Julie Ditton (storybooklady) | 37 comments I finally returned to Below Zero after reading some book club choices and library books that were due soon. It was great and I highly recommend it to thriller fans who have read the earlier Joe Pickett series novels. Next up is Patterson's Circle of Death a thriller in his new updated version of The Shadow.
