Alice | 756 comments I am reading A Terrible Fall of Angels A Terrible Fall of Angels by Laurell K. Hamilton by Laurel K. Hamilton. Very different from her vampire series. Main character is a mail detective in Paranormal department. Lots of Angels, demons and other supernatural. Nice change of pace book if you are looking for something different.

There are very few mysteries set during that time. Sounds like a fascinating story.

I read your review. Is it just the language (which I'm assuming is vulgarity?), or is the story itself more "hardened" than a cozy? While I don't prefer vulgarity in my cozies, I don't mind it as much as I mind the violence one finds in more hardboiled mysteries and thrillers.

message 1459: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker (carstairs38) | 1278 comments The violence is a bit more than in cozies, but it is mostly the language. There is a LOT, especially early on.

Zermeena | 725 comments I recently finished Within the Sanctuary of Wings which I loved. The audio narrated by Kate Reading is amazing! Now I'm listening to Turning Darkness Into Light. It has different narrators because tells the story of Isabella's granddaughter.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Will be reading a Fantasy book soon, haven't begun yet. It is called Age of Myth. The book has been sitting on my e-reader for more than a year. It can be a very good book. I was just waiting or rather, getting lost in newer books. But this time hopefully I get to start reading it.

hmm...I include The Country Club Mysteries in my definition of 'cozy'. And I'm a big fan!

But Mulhern's Poppy Fields Adventures series is definitely not cozy.

message 1465: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I heard that Julie Mulhern's books were cozies (at least one series) and that she was funny. I didn't like her books. They were too hardboiled and had that suburban aesthetic and were snarky instead of being funny. To each their own.

message 1466: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker (carstairs38) | 1278 comments I know a lot of people consider these cozies. To me, the sexual content, while not explicit, still goes well beyond what I consider cozy. I still enjoy them, but I feel more comfortable considering them outside the cozy realm.

There are plenty of books that are borderline. I'm more willing to include things with main characters who are professionals in some capacity if the book is still fairly clean, for example.

Death of a Cozy Writer
by G.M. Malliet

Understand why this is award winning especially the Agatha. It's a more than decent traditional mystery but multiple shifting points of view contributed to me not becoming attached to characters. Some were more dislikable than others. Detective Chief Inspector St. Just and Sergeant Fear join the cast about a third of the way in and if I continue the series it will be due to them. Currently I read more cozies and even romantic suspense than traditional mysteries.

Helen (helennn) | 1020 comments Armed and Outrageous (Agnes Barton Senior Sleuths Mystery, #1) by Madison Johns

This book is tagged as cozy, but has too many adult themes to fit that description. The senior characters are also not believable, for example, Agnes is waiting for a hip replacement, but jumps in and out of bathtubs! Not something anyone with joint issues would even attempt.

Introduction by Tim Busfield

The audio performance by Melissa Gilbert adds to this book. No surprise, she has narrated several. The introduction by her husband Tim Busfield was a pleasant surprise.

I usually prefer listening to memoirs and autobiographies read by the authors but if they don't do well I bail very quickly. In this case I listened almost straight through. I made myself pause for sleep.

Alice | 756 comments I finished The Gilded Shroud by Elizabeth Bailey 4 stars out of 5.  Ms. Bailey is a new to me author. I greatly enjoyed the books. Set in 1789 England, it is a historical mystery.  Her characters are excellent. The Dowger Marchioness reminds you a lot of Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey, feisty but compassionette. The there is not all that much historical other than referfences to American Revolution and unrest in France. I lot of good sleuthing. I have put book 2 on my WL.
