SOLVED. Lost book - portal to magical world, female main character. [s]

Read this book in 2015/16. It was first in a series, but the 2nd in the series hadn't been published at that time. Woman stumbles upon portal while in the woods. Maybe she was a grad student. Meets woman at a large manor/castle. Meets the son/prince. Nothing is as it seems. She appears/feels beautiful (she's actually more frumpy). Her marriage to the son is arranged. It all occurs while she is under a spell. She escapes before wedding. Ends up at the home of a magical curmudgeon of a man. His castle is falling into disrepair and he can hardly afford to keep his staff. He begrudgingly starts teaching her some magic. There's a tower with many books of spells. There's a battle among the magical folk of that world. There's some romantic tension between the woman and the curmudgeon. She eventually returns to her world. Maybe he can travel to her world too. She wants to return.
