message 3: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I finished S&S and Knopf editor-in-chief/New Yorker editor Robert Gottlieb's fascinating Avid Reader: A Life early enough yesterday to be able to count it toward 2016. Next up: Dean Burnett's Idiot Brain: What Your Head Is Really Up To, a biography of children's author Howard Garis by his son, and Paul Jordan-Smith's For the Love of Books: Adventures of an Impecunious Collector. If my editing schedule will allow it, I may even indulge in some fiction!

Michelle Wilson | 22 comments I am midway through Christodora by Tim Murphy. I saw it on a couple of lists for an overlooked great book of 2016 and I have to say that I concur! Finishing up Incarceration Nations by Baz Dreisinger on audio-giving me lots to think about.

My January book club book is The Valley of Amazement, so as soon as I can get that from the library I'll start that. Next up on deck for audio is The Handmaid's Tale.

message 11: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katsikes) | 171 comments Oh yeah - I'm also reading The Scribe of Siena on my phone - free book from Jellybooks.com. I'm enjoying it, just not a fan of reading on my phone and I couldn't load it on my nook - the free book offer requires an e-reader app where you can check in with them as you finish chapters so that they can get data on how readers are interacting with the book.

Susanne (heysus74) | 97 comments I finished Garden Spells on my kindle yesterday.
For my IRL book club, I reading Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything for January, and I'm listening to A Man Called Ove for February.
I'm also reading The Shadow of the Wind. I had wanted to finish this book in December, but it was misplaced and just found. My reading is already scheduled for January, so I'm hoping to squeeze this one in.

What I'm reading now...
Garden Spells (Waverley Family, #1) by Sarah Addison Allen Moonwalking with Einstein The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, #1) by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

I just finished reading Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk. On a 5 point scale, I would give it 10 stars. I LOVED THIS BOOK. The writing is lyrical, original and poked at me so often.

I also finished listening to Hush by Jacqueline Woodson Hush by the marvelous Jacqueline Woodson.

In their places I'm reading Belle Cora by Phillip Margulies Belle Cora and listening to Fannie Flagg's Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. I've listened to almost everything Flagg has written, but missed out on this one - until now.

message 24: by Gina (new)

Gina (crazycatlady328) | 65 comments I just finished listening to The Summer Before the War, which I LOVED, and I was listening to Britt-Marie Was Here, which I had started over vacation but didn't finish until the 4th. Also loved. My current audiobook is Sweetbitter, which I remember Michael really liked, but I'm not sure yet. I'm not in instant love but it's early too so I'm keeping an open mind.

Reading wise, I finally got to read 84, Charing Cross Road, which I've been wanting to read forever. My only complaint was that it was too short! What a sweet book. Currently I'm reading The City Baker's Guide to Country Living, which is fairly light but such a good story. I am a sucker for foodie books and she reminds me of Jenny Colgan, who I just adore. So far it has been a great year in reading/listening!!

The audio is even better!! I loved it! Did you read My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry? That one was great but you have to persevere through the fairy tales, because there's a reason for them.

Readnponder | 125 comments Thanks for the recommendation of Ruta Sepetys' book. It's on my TBR and you've moved it up a notch. Thank you, too, for the term book hangover. That's new to me and so perfect.

Susanne (heysus74) | 97 comments I read my first Fredrik Backman this month with A Man Called Ove. I liked it, but the premise of a grumpy widower who can't commit suicide because his new neighbors keep stopping by didn't sit quite right with me. I felt that aspect could have been handled differently rather than being playing for laughs, but overall I enjoyed the story. I'll have to add Britt-Marie Was Here & My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry to my TBR pile (but it might take me a while to get to them. My TBR is pretty big. I should stop buying books, or at least read the books I have before I buy more. Of course I say this when my library's annual book sale is in two weeks, knowing I'm going to buy even more books).

I'm currently reading The Shadow of the Wind and Zer0es.

This book is on my 2017 TBR pile. I'll go into it with lower expectations, but I am looking forward to the how the plot is resolved.

We read The Complete Persepolis in our first round of our Postal Book Club ... my first graphic novel and I was enchanted. Surprising amount of narrative among the gritty graphics.

Nadine in California (nadinekc) Just an fyi that one of my favorite books A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz is a $1.99 ebook deal from BookBub today (1/22). This is his first book, and I think it is much better than his second Quicksand which came out 7 years later, in 2015. It was short-listed for the Man Booker. The reviews focus on how 'nutty' it is, and it is that but so much more too. And I'm not his publicist or his mother ;)

Miggsy | 33 comments Omigod, this mothertrucker of a book by Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami . I'm only on page 49, Only 560 pages to go!

message 35: by Gina (new)

Gina (crazycatlady328) | 65 comments So I didn't end up loving Sweetbitter but I adored The City Baker's Guide to Country Living. I'm now listening to Major Pettigrew's Last Stand and reading History of Wolves, which just came off library hold. I'm liking Pettigrew but not as much as her other novel, which I read earlier (noted above), and it's too early to tell about the new book.

Marion Hill (kammbia1) I'm currently reading The Lay of the Land (Bascombe Trilogy #3) by Richard Ford by Richard Ford, the third Frank Bascombe book. I have one Frank Bascombe novel each of the past two years and I have enjoyed reading in this time frame. Frank Bascombe is a jerk but Richard Ford can write and I find Bascombe's life very interesting.
