Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments And even if the same brain areas are activated, I don't think that's a conclusion you can draw.

Sorry I'm being so critical. It made me smile when I read it though ;-)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Peggy wrote: "Were they given brain scans while watching pics of humans and the same areas where activated as when we watch pics of puppies?"

I think it was something like that. The post said that the same area of the brain lights up when elephants look at humans, and when humans look at puppies.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Peggy wrote: "Were they given brain scans while watching pics of humans and the same areas where activated as when we watch pics of puppies?"

Exactly. I'll find the link.

Sorry to hear about your kitty Saar. Sounds like she is well loved and looked after.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Lol i missed this page of comments before. Love the psychologist peer review :P But completely justified. Show me the science!

So I can't find the link to the study itself. But nutshell is that elephant's brains are very similarly structured to ours, and have about the same amount of neurons to us.

They scanned brains of us looking at puppies, and elephants looking at us, and similar areas and patterns of the hippocampus (where emotions are regulated) were stimulated. So, not exact, but I like the inferrance.

I just have this image now of elephants that find people so cute that they can't help themselves and just run over and pick us up and cuddle us overtime they see us. lol

Love that image! Those birds are so unimpressed with the elephants antics.

I'm so happy to here the proposal has made it past the GR scientific evaluation stage and can be passed on for consideration by the wider community ;-p

My own position is that i long for the day when it is my turn to get elephant cuddles 🐘💃💖👌

And the elephant in the youtube video really seems to find the girl cute.

message 4917: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Just came home from Christmas with my family, which was fantastic. Sarah, I recommend cream for the vodka. We put a dollop of whipped cream in from the summer pudding and stirred. Mum drank hers through the cream like Tia Maria (this was an important distinction that had to be made after 6 glasses of wine apparently). We also chilled ours as it was 35C today.

Put the pork in the oven now for Lexx's family tomorrow. Letting it crackle, turn it down to 120C and going to bed.

My "research" actually found something along those lines
Elephant wants a hug.

message 4921: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Awww! Love the hugs from the elephant. :)

Speaking of hugs, I was happy to get hugs from my grandson yesterday. It's been a tough year, and hopefully this is a start of better things to come.

Rusalka, one cannot deny any distinctions made after 6 glasses of wine. Did your mom end up with a cream mustache?

message 4922: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments No. She was the picture of refinement. Lol.

To be fair to her, the 6 wines were over 4 hours and a LOT of nibbles, a large main course, and my 1.75kg pudding. She was just happy and indignant. As one should be at Christmas I feel!

message 4923: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 24, 2017 06:43AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments It was still a rather amusing conversation about what she considered good manners or not. Stirring cream in, bad. Drinking through cream, okay.

Also Lexx placed the cream on the table in a plastic container, not in a cream jug. She nearly had conniptions, but held it together.

message 4924: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments That reminds me of my mother. Everything was placed in serving dishes - no pots, jars, plastic containers at the dinner table. I do adhere to that for formal dinners. Day to day, I just dish up at the stove, cut everything into bite-sized pieces, then park in my recliner. The things you do when you live alone. My table has seen more activity this week since my dad has arrived for Christmas.

@Margo and Rusalka: thank you. I'll update after he got his surgery.

I was wondering if they can see on the scans what happens in the brains of elephants when they suffer from PTSS, because then they attack humans.

that is how we do christmas dinner, but in the kitchen as if my mum put all of the food she does on the table there would be no room for us to eat! only that one meal though.

Last year mum decided that as she was only off 1 day over christmas we would have a cold buffet so she could just serve on the day. My ex and i said we would cook dinner and she could relax (my ex is an amazing cook and i am good at chopping onions) the answer was 'no i am looking forward to the buffet'.

Because mum didnt really know what took how much time to get ready and underestimated what she was prepping on the day, we didnt eat until about 7pm. it was worse than the christmas when i kicked off with my sister for cheating at scrabble and had to walk home in the rain :(

message 4927: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Great tip Rusalka on the cream in the vodka. Rob said it sounds right up his street. We'll give it a try later. Happy Christmas to you and Lexx. I've just finished doing the mince pies, tidying and all the other prep. I did have to do a quick last minute trip to the supermarket as the mince meat for the mince pies was out of date. It was left over from last year. At least i thought it was. Turns out it was from 2 christmases ago. Oops. Now all stuff done, we're off to the pub for a couple drinks with our neighbours.

Janice, glad to see that things are looking up. Hugs are a good sign.

Has anyone seen any update on the meerkats? I'm wondering if they were found. I'm still holding out some little hope that they were hiding somewhere.

message 4929: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Good to hear about your hugs Janice. That is a good sign.

Radio news was still saying today that they are unaccounted for. Post mortem for aardvark said it died if smoke inhalation.

LOL! You admit to the cheating? How do you cheat at Scrabble - add incorrectly in favour of your score?

It will be Dad and me for Christmas dinner, tomorrow. It will either be him gloating because he's winning at crib, or whining because he's losing. I just won this morning's round robin so he's buried his nose in his Kindle. It's mighty quiet in here.

No, the meerkats are still unaccounted for at this stage. London Zoo released a statement earlier saying that it is presumed that all four of them died in the fire. I guess there is still a little bit of hope that they might be found alive and well, but it's looking pretty unlikely sadly ☹️

aha no, my mum doesnt play, she wont play any games on christmas day as apparently my dad, my sister and i all get too conpetitive. she worked it out after a paricularly shouty game of who wants to be a millionaire about ten years ago.

she will however stand behind my sister and rearange her tiles to help her. i struggle to beat my dad at the best of times, with a 1 in 5 win ratio if i am bing optimistic, mums antics did not go down well lol.

i love crib, when i was a kid the adults used to play it and tell us that it was too complicated. i actually bought in at a pub once, about 15 people put a fiver in and they dealt jacks which i won. my partner wouldnt play with me because i told them hadnt really played for a few years. a guy from the other corner knew me and said he would and we trounced the other guys!

Sorry to hear about your kitty, Saar. If it helps, my kitty went through the same thing several years ago and she is currently a spry 18 year old. We gave her the special diet food, but she didn't like it and started to lose weight. We ended up giving her what ever she wants to eat just to keep the weight up. Luckily she doesn't want lobster :)

LOL! My mom has banned board games at Christmas time, too. One Christmas my 5 brothers and I were playing RISK and the game got a bit out of control and the board game and pieces went flying.
