Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Sounds great, Sarah! I have a few friends that do aerial stuff, and they love it. I think they are more silks based, than traditional trapeze, but I've seen photos of them doing both, and rings. Hope you love it too!

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. Yeah the silks stuff looks pretty awesome.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The parents-in-law arrived at 10am this morning and have just left (4pm). We did some shopping first and then my mother-in-law cleaned all the windows and my father-in-law helped putting up some shelves and paintings. So yay for that, but it's gopher-day! I finally can get started on it now.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So on Wednesday a guy on Facebook says basically he thinks it's his Yorkie buy he doesn't know if his is missing. Ok. We just figured some guy trying to get a free dog to sell. Later he messaged and said nevermind he talked to the dogs new owner and he isn't missing. Then today the guy is back and says he would like to come see the dog. He's been looking at the pictures of the dog and is convinced it's his old dog. Thinks the new owner lied to him. Said he gave a male and a female to a women and wanted them to finish their lives together. Says he bought them from a puppy mill to save them because they were too old to breed but then he has had to find them a new home and told the woman if they were trouble give them back to him. Now he's worried she dropped the male off. Status of female unknown. On the phone he described dog and I now believe it is this guy's dog. What strange circumstances. I don't know if he plans to take the dog if it's his or leave it since he had already given it away. Probably end up asking us to take the female and he'll go try to get her from the woman. Idk. Talk abiut strange

Cody | 348 comments bloody hell travis, what an odd situation, would you keep its partner?

message 4359: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments That is a strange story, Travis.

message 4360: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not sure. To keep both would put us up to 3 dogs. But since we have a dog this dog wouldn't be alone and we have a family down the road who also has one dog that has been looking for a small dog that could take the female. And the dogs could see each other occasionally. We'll see if he thinks it's the dog or not here sometime this afternoon

message 4361: by Cody (new)

Cody | 348 comments hope it all goes well :)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11297 comments What a mess, Travis. I hope the outcome is positive for everyone.

message 4363: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments He said the dogs have been together 9 years. He bought them and took to get fixed and vet said they were too old. Not sure if dogs get too old or not. That's why I believe he found them a home was because they were having trouble making sure they didn't breed.

message 4364: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Odd I texted my vet and asked if a dog was too old to get fixed. She said no. And let's face it you wouldn't need both done. The female requires a bit more so let her go and just neuter the male is all I'd do. As long as she wasn't going to be around other unneutered males. Which isn't the case at my place. We even fix as many barn cats as we can catch. Which is very few if one enjoys keeping their fingers

message 4365: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments What an odd scenario Travis. Keep us posted. I hope everything sorts it self out. I had a cat once that i bought from a shelter. It went missing and i put a sign in my window. A girl knocked on the door and said it was her cat. That it had ran off a few months back. Her dad showed up and things got a bit awkward. What are the odds. The shelter was a good few miles away and for me to choose a cat that had lived on the same street as me. It was fine in the end. The cat came back and it was mine to keep. Thankfully.

message 4366: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments People came not sure if it's theirs or not. They'll have to make sure the other people have the dogs before they'll take this one. Yeah. Technically you gave it away so it's not your dog. It's also not leaving my property because that dog showed zero recognition of those two. Hopefully don't hear from them again. I don't expect to. Besides this dog is Missing two teeth instead of one.

I've taken in a lot of animals usually when people figure they're gonna die soon and don't want to deal with it and you get the they pee in the house now we can't keep them. Anyway they often live a few years. And in that time if the original owners stop back by those animals act like they miss them and are so happy. This dog was just like who are you people. You can pet me if you want. Hell yeah

message 4367: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Plus the story changed to thru bought them to breed and found they were too old for any more litters so they found a new home so they could get younger ones. Yeah you just torched the sympathy card and alerted the Travis trusts no one and now there's sketchy people on my property

message 4368: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments That story just gets more bizarre, Travis. If the dog didn't recognize them, and they left still not sure it's their dog, something is fishy.

What I don't understand is why. Why the charade?

message 4369: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Yeahhhh... nah. Too dodgy. Unless he turns up with proof (ie. current rego papers) then I wouldn't let him take the dog. Especially if the dog showed no recognition.

I mean, I went to my Mum's this arvo. She got a new dog 3 months ago, who I've met 3 times. This dog recognised me straight away, and ran off to get her toy that we played with last time, and greeted me with licks and happy jumps. She barks at anyone she doesn't recognise. So if the dog lived with you for a period of time... nah... fails the sniff test. Literally.

message 4370: by [deleted user] (new)

Gosh Travis that sounds super weird. I agree with Rusalka, if the dog knows the guy, he would have reacted to him without a doubt.

My parents live in Canada and I see them once a year at Christmas. When they had their dog Jaxx, he recognized us every year we went.

I hope it all turns out OK.

message 4371: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2653 comments That's a weird story, Travis. The dog is good with you and hopefully he can stay there. Dogs normally recognize their owners when they went missing, so I wouldn't trust this person.

message 4372: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I believe we are done with the dog episode. I'm scheduling a vet visit to get shots and neutered and getting him chipped. Not sure if the vet puts in chips or not seems like they should be able to. Seriously people if you're so in love with your pets just get them chipped makes everything so much easier. I've never gotten an animal chipped before but my other dog came to us already chipped. Wonder if that is any good as I suppose his chip wouldn't show us as the owners I think I'll ask about that now that I've thought of it.

What I liked was the two stood up and were talking debating whether it was their dog and my son quietly walks over picks the dog up and puts him with the toys. Of course the dog ran out but he just went and got him and out him with the toys again. We said what are you doing trying to hide him with the toys so that he stays here. He just smiled but didn't say anything. Both kids were so quiet terrified these people were going to take their dog. You can interview people all day but you find some place better for the dog to live than one where little boys try to hide their dog in the toys to protect them.

message 4373: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Our microchips show you the registered owners. Now it's up to the owners to update the chip if they get rid of the dog. But it gives the owners name, and phone number here. So sounds like it would have.

Good on you guys, and particularly for raising such good kids. I'd be right there with him. I love how kids pick up on things being not quite right.

i agree with the chipping 100% just makes life so much easier and there was a story earlier, perhaps from you it has been a few pages since, where someone had their dog stolen and when they saw it, the guy just said 'nope its my dog'

message 4377: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah that was me back in about 2003 with the dog thief

message 4378: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Chipping of dogs became a legal requirement here earlier in the year. Or last year. I can't remember which. Should make things a lot easier.

message 4379: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That might have been an EU thing though and with brexit they might change there mind at some point. After all, our government has passed a law or something that animals don't feel pain so they can keep them in cramped conditions, transport long distances and start up fox hunting again and more besides (and forgo all the legislation EU pit in place originally to protect animals). They've back tracked a little after they were confronted so hopefully they won't go down that route.

message 4380: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well I've never got a hold on doing pictures so I just made our tractor selfie from the day we found him my profile pic. Although I since gave him a bath so he has nicer fur now

Sarah | 18550 comments Nice one Travis. Ralph is a cutie.

message 4382: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments He’s a cutie! I agree with the others. If that was their dog, he would have recognized them. Sounds like your kid has some good instincts. Ask the vet about getting the other dog’s chip reregistered to you. They should be able to help. The last dog we adopted from a shelter, they took care of that for us.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I ordered a receiver for the wireless fence for Ralph. It was funny the other day is was really nice out so I put both dogs out. Every so often Ralph would leave the boundary but he'd get so far and turn and see Loki still back in the boundary and he'd just run back down. Basically we're just letting our other dog teach him. Which he did mark some furniture the first day but since Ralph and Loki have bonded we've had no more issues. Just mutt and Jeff playing follow the leader. Lol. I had to explain mutt and Jeff to my wife she'd never heard of them

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) Currently watching "Balto" with my two-year-old, enjoying a cozy fire, and a hot cup of coffee while the laundry's on. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Looks like Ralph has claimed you as his human, so the other guy can go bark up another tree. I love that your son tried to protect him by hiding him with the toys.

Sarah | 18550 comments Hmm. I might need mutt and Jeff explaining to me. Here in the Uk, well London to be exact, mutt and Jeff is cockney rhyming slang for deaf.

message 4390: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments While on the subject of cockney rhyming slang, my mum was chatting to me the other day and described her friend as Joe Blunt. I asked what it meant and she said it was slang for someone who is blunt and says things like they are. I asked her why she didn't just say that rather than using the slang when the slang was longer. Plus I started to have suspicions that it might not mean what my mum thought it did. So i looked it up on google and lo and behold, it means exactly what I thought it meant, a very rude word beginning with C that rhymes with blunt. I cracked up laughing and found it incredibly hard to stop. I'm chuckling to myself as i right this too. I told my mum never to use the term again. Lol

message 4391: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Mutt and Jeff is referred to in cases where you have a tall and a short person. According to Wikipedia as I looked it up for my wife. Mutt and Jeff we're the first comic strip using panels making a scene. Before you'd have just a picture. The comic ran from 1903-1983 or something like that. A long time anyway.

We have very autumny weather today (lots of wind, lots of rain, lots of grey skies) so I booked a holiday to sunnier places. We're going to La Palma (Canary Islands) in January. It should be like spring there :)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11297 comments I know we had talked before about free online education. I do from time to time a course in FutureLearn. I thought someone here could be interested in this course by The University of Edinburgh starting on January 8th called "How to read a novel". I think it could be interesting or an absolute fiasco, but I will try it.

https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/h...

Description:
What makes a great novel? How is a novel woven together? How can we best appreciate works of fiction?
What topics will you cover?
The course examines specific techniques relating to plotting and temporality including flashbacks, unreliable narration and framed narratives.
The course considers ways of understanding character, such as behaviour and motives.
It explores issues relating to the presentation of dialogue, including conversational mood and dialect voices.
The course examines the impact of various different settings on the development of plot and character.
