Cody | 348 comments i got a trainer in for mollie earlier today, as i have mentiond she is awful to walk.

the trainer came and was great, told me what to do in the house to make her overall obedience better, and itis working brilliantly, we spent half an hour in front of my house walking back and forth and i was to tug on the lead if necessary. she wasnt the best but we had a squirter if she went too far (with water in)

this semed to stop her great, so we moved on to the next street, she has friends there so i knew it would be difficult, i tugged the lead a couple of times (left handed) and it wasnt working, so i started squirting her.

after 3 squirts, a woman came out of her home and told us she had been watching us we were cruel (5 mins in front of her house), looked at the trainer and told him what to do (she was in her pyjamas and smoking)

then stood there and watchd us both, smoking, we kind of just slinked away and for all i know she is still stood there now, smoking, when we got back onto my steet i said 'welcome to moston' and we laughed

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Speaking of dogs we had a freezing cold soaking wet Yorkshire terrier on our steps this morning. Which we live in the middle of nowhere so it's kind of an odd breed to have gotten lost and ended up here. Still giving human kind the benefit of the doubt we took pictures posted on Facebook and shared to umpteen pages that aid in missing pets. We called the shelter the SPCA the vet. Took it to the vet to get checked for a microchip. Long story short I believe I'm now the owner of a Yorkie.

As someone who has a lifelong hatred of toy dogs I have to admit this is a pretty nice little dog. Hasn't barked at all hasn't nipped at my ankles or snapped at my kids. Amazing. My experience is usually one that little ankle biters are little bastards of dogs.

So dog rode on tractor with me and went all over. I didn't want to leave him alone in the house. Didn't want him cold outside or getting run over so basically I was the crazy farmer down the road carrying a Yorkie around all day. Lol. The neighbors down the road have one and whenever the batteries in his collar die my German shorthaired pointer likes to go down and play with her. Now he's got his own little toy doggie to play with. They haven't fought at all.

Funny thing this morning I was looking at my phone, wife opens door and dog runs in they're such a small dog I wasn't paying attention to much. Then I look and beside me on the couch was this Yorkie laying on a pillow like he owned the place. First time we'd ever seen him and first time he'd ever been in house. Didn't even sniff around just ran and curled up on pillow beside me.

ROFL! We were coming back from lunch and saw a woman walking her yorkie. It looked like the dog had a fur lined hood on it's head. Indeed, it was wearing a coat. I made a comment about the dog not being a dog, but kind of a cat. I shouldn't laugh too hard since my hairdresser has two of them.

Sarah | 18550 comments Great to hear you had some success with Mollie, Cody. You paint a great picture of your experience with the smoking woman. It made me chuckle.

And your experience with the Yorkie made me smile Travis. Sounds like it's found a good home. I have a great image now of you carrying the dog around your farm. That has cheered me up no end. What are you going to call him?

Travis, the little Yorkie sounds really sweet. Let us know how it all it goes with him.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I named him Ralph. One of my wife's patients told her that was the stupidest dog named she ever heard in her life. Plus everyone knows dogs have to have two syllable names. Well patient, my uncle Ralph had two ankle biters. Not sure the breed as I was a little kid but horrible little creatures. They did you and bite and forever made me hate tiny dogs. Well except this one so far. Anyway because of that I call him Ralph. My wife calls him Ralphie to make it two syllable.

message 4311: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think Ralph/Ralphie is a perfect name for him. The dog from the muppets was called Rowlf!

message 4312: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments NAww what a cutie. You and Ralph! Hope you find his home, if he has one, but sounds like your place is an awesome option two. I agree with Sarah, re Muppets. I heard that dogs names are better with a vowel on the end (nothing about syllables) as humans are able to project them better. But then Raphie does the trick if that's needed.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well I'm cautiously optimistic. For about ten years I've been trying to recall a book read to us by our teacher in fifth grade. I know it had a red cover and no pictures or very few. I remember he'd read and ask us to draw a picture depicting what was read. That was the lesson how our imagination puts books into pictures for us. I've asked school mates and on Facebook. People kind of remember but don't know the title. I believe I finally found it last night with Google. Not the first time I've googled little pieces I remember but when the title popped up I felt I could recall the teacher saying that it was The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. Fingers crossed. Then I've also been trying to find some book I read on a summer vacation in probably second grade. After that last book came up in the top corner with readers also enjoyed lo and behold without adoubt the other book I've been searching for My Father's Dragon. I've ordered them both for my son. Going to guess they won't hold up for me as an adult but he is just the age for them. Surprise here they are fantasy novels. Gasp! Who'd have thought

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles was written by Julie Andrews. I didn't know that.

No, I haven't read it, but added it now to my TBR.
I remember hearing Julie Andrews had written a couple of books for kids, but never checked the titles. For some reason I wasn't expecting fantasy. But now that you mention the book and I realized it was by her, plus you enjoyed it, I think it is worth a try.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Lol. Yeah I knew what you were implying. I was going to say he wasn't a farmer but that dog got stolen from me so I don't know if he was or not. We saw the dog at a house about a mile away and stopped in and said oh you found our dog. Guy was like no it's my dog . Collar and tags were long gone I really had no proof so what is a person to do. We just left the dog there. Couldn't have been only 4-5 months old probably. Ran away from home with it's brother and mother. Those two were at the pound covered in porcupine quills. The pound told us where about they were picked up. The third dog was at a house a little ways down the road. Heck for all I know the guy took the two with quills to the pound and kept the third. Idk. Just flat out told us it wasn't our dog. It was. I've seen it occasionally in the yard since then although it's probably dead from old age. I put it's brother to sleep 2 years ago I believe. Dog always seemed content when I drove by. I considered stealing it back but figured somehow I'd be the one in trouble. Who just looks a dogs owner in the eye knowing it wasn't really their dog and say it's his. People.

message 4325: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments People is right, Travis. One of our dogs was just dropped off in the driveway. Poor thing. She kept going to the end of the driveway waiting for her previous owner to come and get her. It was months before she stopped doing that. We called her Zena because it fit with our other rescue dog, Zeus. I left both with my ex when I moved. A couple years, my ex informed me that she had been hit and killed on the highway.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That's sad Janice. I know just how quickly that can happen I've hit a couple of dogs myself through the years. The first one was actually my grandfather's and to this day I swear that dog jumped over a snow bank into my tire. That's the way it looked when it happened. I never understood why the dog was jumping over a snow bank into the road to begin with. Through the years my grandfather has had many dogs hit in road. I think a large portion of the blame falls on him. I can't tell you how many times I've been driving and called him to tell him his dogs are in the road other than too many times.

message 4328: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Call me pessimistic but I feel like after so long looking those books can only end up a disappointment. Only because I watch so many people search for childhood favorites only to find they we're much more enjoyable as a child if my son enjoys them I'll know it was worth it though

message 4329: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11297 comments That happens, Travis. I bought The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for my kids a few years back, because I loved it. It was my favorite book with The Little Prince. I thought I could read it to them, but I am really scared to death that it won't be what I remember, so I decided to just let them read it by themselves when they are at the right age.

Quite a few of our dogs were hit and killed on the highway. I ran two over myself. One died and the other survived. We were haying and she slipped under the tire. The vet figured that the ground was soft enough that she was cushioned enough to avoid any injury. I was sick both times.

Is anyone hitting the Black Friday sales? I have just bought a Christmas jumper online but that's about all I will be buying.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Nope. I've been watching for a sale on a Google pixel book and they aren't on sale. Maybe cyber Monday. I'm convinced between now and Christmas they will be on sale. Meanwhile MacBooks are in sale. Except I hate apple. Microsoft surface books are on sale except I'm not really used to using Windows anymore. Going for the Chromebook because I've primarily used my phone for internet for probably 8 years now. I've been real happy so far with my pixel 2 phone so I want to stick with the same thing. I think it will be easier for me if both devices are basically the same. Now if I could just find a sale

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Black Friday is something that has been coming up here too in recent years. Nothing comparable to the US I think though, but I noticed that this year almost all (bigger) stores have Black Friday discounts and it's being advertised everywhere for days.

Personally, I hate it. Firstly because I hate shopping when it's super crowded. Traditionally the second day of Christmas (your Boxing Day) and Easter Monday are busy in stores here, and I always avoid going there on those days. I honestly don't understand why people want to line up in a traffic jam for 2 hours to go shopping in a place that's so busy that you can hardly walk and are jostled all the time. I guess shopping online would be better ;-)
Second, I don't like that we're taking over so many traditions of other countries. Oktoberfest is getting bigger and bigger here everywhere, there's Black Friday, there's more and more Halloween. Last week there was Singles Day or something, which originates in Asia. We also have a Dutch tradition in November that's also with lights and bonfires and children come door by door with lampions (I don't believe it's an English word, although google tells me it is. It's like home-made lanterns) and sing a song in return for candy. But hardly anyone does that anymore around here.

Okay, I'm done ranting ;-)

i know what you mean but i am not sure i mind it, its just globalisation. we probably get it more in england because america is the dominant country and we share a language, our dialects change to be more like theirs,

i remember when i was in school a girl got laughed out of the classroom because she said 'you suck' or something similar, that term is quite a regular thing heer now, same with cool.

we also get halloween and a few others that i cant think of offhand.

message 4344: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments So i hate black friday. I now it's just the american version of our boxing day sales but still. It means nothing here as we don't do thanksgiving. But it's here nonetheless. So i agree Peggy. I don't like that we have adopted these things when they aren't relevant to our culture. I don't mind halloween mainly because it's based on the celtic festival of samhain which the Brits celebrated back in the day. It's pretty different I'm guessing to how they celebrated though.

Don't get me wrong, i love a bargain, but I'm not fighting hoards of people or queuing up for stuff. It's bad enough in the shops at the moment leading up to xmas. Over the years I've increasingly bought more online to avoid the chaos.

I agree Travis, it's best to have devices that are similar and therefore familiar to use. I'm used to Windows 10. I bought a new laptop a few months back. It was an expensive one though and now I don't want to commute with it to work. So I'm on the look out for a small notebook that is cheap that i can take with me. I saw the chromebooks which look good buy I'd have to get used to another OS and i want to make sure everything is compatible. I've seen a lenovo notepad which has Windows 10 so I'll get that i think. Only £150. So I've basically spent my xmas money already.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I feel the same as you, Peggy and Sarah. Black Friday isn't really relevant to our culture and I don't understand why we have adopted it. To me, it just feels like another excuse to shove consumerism in our faces. Also, I think it encourages bad behaviour and greed in some people. You always hear stories of fights breaking out in shops between customers and you also hear of people buying things that they know they will never use or wear but they just had to have them because they were cheap. What is the point? I like a bargain as much as the next person but I only ever buy stuff that I will definitely wear or use a decent amount. The jumper I brought today in the sales was one I had planned on buying anyway as it had been on my radar for a while and the fact it happened to be in the sale was an added bonus.

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Ugh! Black Friday.

I've been having issues with a laptop I bought two weeks ago. I even had an IT Tech here to map it to my PC so my employee could work on the data stored on it. The load times were extremely and unbearably long. He checked the hard drive performance. It was running at optimum performance with quick response time, yet the hard drive was working at 100%. Diagnosis - hard drive malfunction (aka cheap junk put into cheap laptop).

Today was the first day this week I've been able to deal with it. I took it back to Costco, then ran over to Best Buy where I had purchased a better quality laptop a couple months back. I had decided to get another just like it.

First, I had a heck of a time getting someone to help me. When I finally found a sales clerk, I identified which one I wanted. He called another clerk over to get one out of stock for me. They started arguing about why neither one could help me. I finally said, "Excuse me. Do either one of you want to make a sale? Because you've got a sale. Right here. Right now. So decide who's going to get the credit for the sale, and get to it." I was out of there with a laptop tucked under my arm in no time - Black Friday or not.
