Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sandra, I also suddenly didn't receive notifications anymore for this thread. I turned them off and on again and now it seems to be working.

message 3952: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11298 comments I wasn't getting notifications for any group and any thread. Not notifications at all. It is working no, but I don't know what happened in the middle. We had an outage so I couldn't check it anyway. :)
Not my day!

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Sarah, I like cornbread with beans or greens like collards with a good pot liquor (tho that most often involves ham or bacon but it doesn't have to). I also like it for breakfast with a little butter and molasses. Yum!

There's a division, or used to be, in the US about whether sugar should be included. Traditionally, it was not in the south, and it was in the north. I don't use any or only a very small amount. I prefer courser grind cornmeal and I use my stalwart cast iron skillet, preheating it in the oven with some butter until it's sizzling hot. This helps make a crunchier crust that I love. I sometimes add in things like corn, onion, peppers, cheese. It's fun to play around with : )

message 3954: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments That sounds delicious, TJ. Could you post your cornbread skillet recipe?

message 3955: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Corn bread with chilli definitely and for sure with gumbo, fried chicken, fried catfish, beans, collard greens. I'm now craving southern food!

message 3956: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think i might need to do some googling after the last couple posts as I've no idea what some of the things are you guys have mentioned. Like gumbo and collard greens for example. Also Kristie, I'm guessing when you mentioned baked beans you didn't mean Heinz baked beans. Lol.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments The first round of voting in the 2017 Goodreads Choice awards is open. I was only able to vote in one category, Young Adult, as it was the only category where I have read and quite enjoyed one of the nominees. I have quite a few of the other nominees from various categories on my TBR but I haven't read them yet. As with other years, I am surprised by some of the books that have made it in. Caraval for instance, which I know a lot of people had problems with. And I must be the only person on the planet that did not like The Bear and the Nightingale. Lol!

message 3958: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11298 comments Already???? We still have 2 more month to go! This should be done at the end of the year, or January next year...

I'll take a look, but I don't think I read too much published this year. Last year I made a point of reading new books, but not this year... :(

message 3959: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also had a look, but as always, I haven't read any of the nominees. I have several on my wishlist and even own a few.

message 3960: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I get the skillet idea. Never tried it but my wife makes a pizza crust that has corn meal in it and is cooked in a skillet so I can see how that would work nicely

I thought it seemed quite early too, Sandra. I guess they do have several rounds of voting to get through, but it's a bit unfair on books which are published in November and December. Unless they are eligible for next year's awards?

My notifications broke yesterday too.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Glad you're enjoying your new phone Travis. I will also miss the Travis-speak heh. But sounds like it's a good fit for you.

My phone's been playing up since we got back from holidays. Really slow and clunky. I think I may just need to give it a clean out, and maybe a software upgrade. But who has time for that!

message 3964: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Looked through nominees. Read one. Was so so. Rest of nominees don't really even appeal to me this year. No vote from me

I think the one's from November and December will be part of next year's awards. I always think it's unfair for books published in September of October. They are much less likely to receive votes because they're so new and fewer people will have had a chance to read them then books published in January or February.

message 3966: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments The awards always start around this time and the books put forward have to be published Nov 2016 - Nov 2017. I was able to vote on 3 categories. What annoys me is all the series books. I was looking at the books and some are number 9 in a series. Of course i've not read it. I've not even read book 1 ( but i added it to my wishlist).

message 3967: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments Haha! Yes, Sarah. I meant homemade. lol

Thanks for the notice about the choice awards, Lisa. I can’t wait to check them out. This is the normal time for them to open, maybe a couple days early. I think it was Nov 1st last year. Books published in December are eligible for next year. I’m not sure exactly when the cutoff is without looking at it, but there are always a few books in the first round that haven’t come out yet.

message 3968: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments Here are the rules and eligibility for the choice awards:

2017 Rules & Eligibility
The 2017 Goodreads Choice Awards have three rounds of voting open to all registered Goodreads members. Winners will be announced December 05, 2017.

Opening Round: Oct 31 - Nov 05
Voting opens to 15 official nominees, and write-in votes can be placed for any eligible book (see eligibility below).

Semifinal Round: Nov 07 - 12
The top five write-in votes in each of the categories become official nominees. Additional write-ins no longer accepted.

Final Round: Nov 14 - 27
The field narrows to the top 10 books in each category, and members have one last chance to vote!

2017 Eligibility
Books published in the United States in English, including works in translation and other significant rereleases, between November 16, 2016, and November 15, 2017, are eligible for the 2017 Goodreads Choice Awards. Books published between November 16, 2017, and December 31, 2017, will be eligible for the 2018 awards.

We analyze statistics from the millions of books added, rated, and reviewed on Goodreads to nominate 15 books in each category. Opening round official nominees must have an average rating of 3.50 or higher. Write-in votes may be cast for eligible books with any average rating, and write-in votes will be weighted by the book's Goodreads statistics to determine the top five books to be added as official nominees in the Semifinal Round. A book may be nominated in no more than one genre category, but can also be nominated in the Goodreads Author category. Only one book in a series may be nominated per category. An author may receive multiple nominations within a single category if he or she has more than one eligible series or more than one eligible stand-alone book.

Sarah | 18550 comments Don't rorget tou can always manually add a book this round if it doesn't show up. I did under the mystery category.

message 3970: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments So basically there could be books in there that haven't even been published. That doesn't make any sense. There may a few people who have read them through netgalley or something, or perhaps a few more if it was published earlier in another country, but still.

But to be honest I've always thought there could be a lot of improvements to make these awards more fair and representative, which is one of the reasons I don't really care about them.

Travis gets new phone. Sarah says hold my beer I'll type some Travis talk lol

message 3972: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So yesterday was windy as fu-schnickens around here. Went to grocery store to see if they had the beer I wanted they didn't I got donuts. And that has nothing to do with my story sorry.

Upon arriving I exit my truck and here a shopping cart hauling it towards an SUV. I also paused momentarily to see if the woman walking through lot who was watching said cart head for SUV would grab it. She did not. She just kept walking and watching. About 10' to impact I intercept it and take it to the proper cart holding pen. To my surprise there was actually a woman sitting in SUV not paying any attention to the fact she was about to get carted or that I saved her from it. She was just tuned in to her book or whatever. Kind of wish I had a sticker to put on the vehicle saying saved by shopping cart man. Lol. I got side tracked there my point was more towards the woman who decided to watch a cart about to hit a vehicle rather than walk the 5 ft and put it away like I did. Society these days.

ROFL! Someone has to take up the reins.

Janice (jamasc) | 60075 comments I always challenge myself to read newly published books so that I at least have a reference for these awards. Apparently, my taste leans heavily to the YA Fantasy genre. I had several from there. I was really disappointed with the selections under Mystery and Fantasy. I manually wrote a title in for Fantasy.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Travis sivarT wrote: "fu-schnickens"

fu-what? Is it a typo or a real word? It sounds cool :D

I don't understand either Travis.. I've had several times that someone walking in front of me drops something (like a glove) and people just walk on and don't pick it up to give it back to the person.

message 3977: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't know it gets used around here . Wonder what urban dictionary has to say

message 3978: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments Janice - I think I usually read a lot of new releases. Even so, there are always many nominees that I haven't read. However, I usually have a lot of them on my TBR. I feel like this year there are a lot of books I don't even recognize.

Peggy - I've seen that a lot too. It's sad that so many people just can't be bothered to do something so simple for someone else.

It was an album out out back when Shaq rapped or I guess it was a hip hop trio including Shaq. Honestly I just like to replace f bombs with fu schnickens. I've never actually considered if it was or wasn't a real word

I agree, Peggy, but I don't know if that is even possible in GR. Remember people rate books they didn't even read so...

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Okay, pretty excited, the Houston Astros beat the LA Dodgers in our big baseball series!!!!

First "world series" win for the Astros. So competitive and unpredictable. Stupidly happy.

Sarah | 18550 comments So I have another bloody chest infection. Not happy. Second one this year or third if you count my flu followed by chest infection over christmas and new year. Fed up of it now.

On a more positive note, I am off to a hypnosis convention this weekend in London. I'm so excited. I've not been to one before and there are a lot of big names in the field of hypnosis going to be there. I should learn lots of interesting stuff.

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. Just making some soup. I always think soup is good for anything like that. My partner brought a massive butternut squash home from work yesterday. Someone had grown it on their allotment. I swear it is the size of 6 normal butternut squashes. So I've just made a spicy butternut squash and chickpea soup. Also roasted some to put in a quiche with beetroot and feta. I still have most of it left though. I might have to palm some of it off to the neighbouring boats.

Enjoy your soup, Sarah. It sounds really nice! I agree with you, I think soup always hits the spot when you are feeling unwell. I always reach for chicken soup when I have a cold or flu.

message 3990: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11298 comments I agree about the soup! I don't know if there is a scientific reason, but soup always help. It is a comfort food when you fell unwell

message 3991: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I love soup! One of my favourite foods, to make and to eat. I don't eat it so much in the middle of summer, but the rest of the year I love warm soup on cold days, I love it when I feel sick, or when I just have a meh day. Definitely comfort food.

Your soup sounds very nice Sarah.
