Kristie | 19326 comments I've been a bit less active on Goodreads lately. I've had quite a bit going on!

I just got back from Romania. A friend and I went over there to do some work with the Roma children and their families. We had an excellent time. We worked with some of the mommas making jewelry and spent a lot of time with the children doing some projects and such. We also got to tour the Roma school and visit with some elderly in homes out there.

When I got back, I received a message that our adoption agency would like to fast track our home study because we are adopting siblings. Have I mentioned that my husband and I are adopting a sibling group from foster care?? Not sure if I mentioned that here or not. Well, they called to see if we could set up some visits before I have to leave again, so we had a visit today and two more set up for the next week and a half. Our home study should be done sometime in November.

Next up, I am planning to go to the Goodreads users summit in California. Then, the day after I return, I am heading up north to take care of my mom because she is having a knee replacement surgery. Phew! A lot going on over here. I expect to be home and settled for a while during the month of November before the Christmas chaos begins.

Looking forward to the toppler between trips!!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11301 comments You are really busy, Kristie. I recall you mentioning about the adoption, but for some reason I understood you would work as a foster home while the kids found a family. I didn't realize you were actually adopting. How old are the kids? Have you met them already?

message 3557: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments I don't know yet, Sandra. We went into it with adoption as our goal. After the home study is completed the agency will match us with kids. :)

Margo | 11668 comments Peggy, I've just realised I never got back to about what you can do when you go to dublin. Sorry, I've really busy lately. I asked around to see what is fun at the moment and these are the suggestions that were made:

http://www.vikingsplash.com/ (cheesy but fun)
http://kilmainhamgaolmuseum.ie/
https://www.glasnevinmuseum.ie/index....
https://www.getyourguide.com/s/?q=dub...
https://teelingdistillery.com/tasting...
http://www.castledracula.ie/

https://www.tcd.ie/visitors/book-of-k... - my personal favorite ;-)

And if you are thisty : https://www.indycoffee.guide/ireland-...

Hope you find something of interest in there. I might have to visit Draculas Castle myself - it sounds great.

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. My nan passed away this afternoon. We were all there with her. She was 97. I lived with her for the first 22 years of my life. She's been a second mum to me. My heart is broken. She had a good life though and has been active and pretty healthy up until her heart attack the other day.

I so sorry to hear that Sarah. I've not checked this thread in the last week so I has no idea your Nan had been taken ill. You were obviously very close. It is good that you were able to be with her at the end.

Well I surprised my wife by hiring someone to milk for me so we could go out for our anniversary today which is actually tomorrow but who can do things on a Monday. Where are we going she asked. Hiking. Ooh where. How should I know you're the hiker you tell me.

Anyway got serious bonus points for the hike. Foliage isn't quite peak. It wasn't bad but I wish I'd taken my inhaler since I was wheezing within 100 yards but I survived and it made her day so it's all good.

Travis that was a nice thing to do! Loads of bonus points I'd say ;-)
How long are you married?

message 3579: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Happy anniversary, Travis! I hope your wife loved the hike, and that your lungs survived. I agree, brownie points in your favour!

Peggy, definitely go to Trinity College and see the Book of Kells exhibition. I convinced Lexx to stand in the long line, as it was the only thing I really wanted to see in Dublin. He really enjoyed it once we got in, and even thanked me for taking him! And the Long Room at the end is totally worth it as a book lover.

Best coffee we found in Dublin - https://www.facebook.com/brotherhubba...

What area are you staying in?

message 3580: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Yeah, the Las Vegas thing is horrific. Watching the footage on tv was pretty shocking while I was making dinner (it happened about 6pm our time, and the news programs start at 6.30-7).

I have honestly never heard an automatic weapon, and straight away I knew it was one hearing how long it fired. That's not right to be readily available. That seriously scared me, and highlights how much I do not understand the lack of gun control in the States.

I hope no one here, or family or friends are effected.

message 3581: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments I agree Rus. I really don't think that, when the american constitution was written, that they envisioned automatise automatic weapons :,(

I agree, Rusalka. Automatic weapons, or any weapons for that matter, should not be that easy to get hold of.

The latest reports out of Las Vegas say 50 people have died and around 200 have been injured, some of them critically. The gunman was a local man and he was shot and killed by the police.

message 3585: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments Happy anniversary, Travis!

So sorry for Las Vegas. I don't know what's wrong with people lately. It seems this sort of thing just keeps happening. It makes no sense.

message 3586: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thanks Kristie

The US has an odd set up because gun rights are made by the states. I live in NY. It's a hassle to get anything here. Toughest gun laws in the whole country.

message 3587: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys.

Happy Anniversary Travis. You did good!

Only seen the headlines of the shooting. Not sure I want to see anything more than that. A huge death and injury toll. Scary stuff.

message 3589: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments So sorry for your loss, Sarah! My heart goes out to you.

Happy Anniversary Travis. You did very good!

I just saw the death toll in Las Vegas is up to 58 and the injured count is at 515! It looks like the shooter took his own life. Right now he is not suspected as part of a terrorist group even though ISIS is claiming it was. He was a white, 64 year old retired accountant with no political or religious ties (that have been uncovered as of yet anyway).

message 3590: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well his father was on fbi 10 most wanted list in the 60's or 70's and his girlfriend moved to Australia so they have to find her to see if she feared this man and that's why she moved or if she just moved. Also in only a few days at hotel he managed to sneak 10 rifles into his room.. wtf

message 3591: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Now they're reporting Tom Petty may still be alive. 50/50 one of my two posts is sure to be right. Lol

message 3593: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60075 comments I hadn't heard anything about the Las Vegas attack until I got home this afternoon and turned on my computer. Then, I logged in to Facebook and learned that my friend's daughter was injured in that attack, She was hit in both legs by two bullets. One is lodged behind her knee cap and she is awaiting surgery in Las Vegas.

Two Canadians were killed in the attack, and one is from a small town just an hour and a half away from me. She leaves behind 4 young children. It breaks my heart.

message 3594: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments Oh no, Janice. That is just horrible.

message 3595: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Bahck. Read that how you want it's a sound of disgust as I have no words for these tragedies anymore

message 3596: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments The thing is I don't believe I knew anyone at this Vegas show but I know so many people who have gone and seen Jason Aldean. Could just as easily happened at one they were at or a show I was at with a different singer. Domestic terrorism is so scary and yet when you see a show you go to it if you want. Because to be afraid and not live your life is to succomb to the terror and the terrorists win.

message 3597: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60075 comments I agree, Travis. We have to keep living our lives and doing the things we love to do.

When I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life. I went to a therapist because I felt frozen and unable to act. He continually asked me, "Are you going to manage your fear, or are you going to let your fear manage you?"

For some, especially those touched by these attacks, there is going to be some fear to manage, and it's not an easy thing to do.

message 3598: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19326 comments I was just thinking about that too. I was wondering how many people are going to stop going to events because of fear of these attacks. It's sad to think that people will not live their lives the way they want to because of this.

message 3599: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments What is it they say. A coward dies a thousand deaths. I'm sure there will be some people apprehensive for a while but hopefully it passes and they can carry on. Certainly anyone directly affected may take a long time to over come their fear. Fully understandable.
