Margo | 11668 comments Lisa, that was the first news I heard today. I believe that if the devise had detonated as it was meant to things would have much worse. We live in scary times where such things have become common place and cause hardly a ripple. Tomorrow it will be forgotten completely - except by the victims :(

Margo | 11668 comments @peggy - you're coming to Dublin! Yay! Get plenty of rest before the trip :-D

@rusalka - what a great tip! I wonder if that info is available on medical help lines? It should be. Aussie wisdom - I'm impressed!!

@ Travis - good choice lololol

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm surprised at how little coverage it gets here. With previous attacks there are several news items, a live blog, and it's headlining and you can't miss it. Now it's just one news item, among many. I wonder if it is because nobody was killed.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Margo - I love that about your uncle and hope his attitude continues. Just be sure you don't overdo it.

Saar - I hope you're taking care of yourself!

Peggy - Just reading your post made me tired :) Sounds like some time off will be just what you'll need.

Janice - are you getting settled in with the wiring and everything? I love unpacking. I wish someone would come pack all my stuff now so I could go through it in a semi-organized way and not just stare at the piles. Did you get rid of a lot of unnecessary stuff when you packed?

My bite doesn't feel hot, but I need to set up an appt. with my new doctor. Maybe this will motivate me.

I reckon that's the reason for the lack of news coverage, Peggy. I think it's awful that an attack such as this is deemed less newsworthy because nobody died. Whilst it's good that no one lost their lives, that doesn't make it any less horrific for those who were caught up in it.

I agree, Margo. The device only partly detonated, which clearly saved people's lives. It was quite a large device so I shudder to think what would have happened had it gone off as it was meant to.

Sarah | 18550 comments Just back from my boating trip with my Austrian visitors. Had a great time. We went from Bristol Harbour to a remote village in Wiltshire. 56 miles and 54 locks. We had mixed weather but we still managed to stick to our itinerary. Did some fun tourist stuff in Bristol, Bath and Bradford on Avon and enjoyed some awesome food. Our boat feels very empty and quiet now they have gone. I think i mentioned I bought a game of thrones card game to play with them if it rains. We played twice and it is a really awesome game. I highly recommend it.

Those magpies are very beautiful Rusalka. But spooky to have that many around your place.

Glad you enjoyed your trip Lisa. I will have to get up to Scotland at some point.

I hope the treatments go well for your Uncle, Margo. I hope your back is feeling better. Can't help on the disc decompression surgery other than my mum had it but that was over 40 years ago now and a lot has changed since then.

Travis, I've won about 5 books on this goodreads giveaways. I think perhaps there are less participants in the UK ones.

I hope no one was affected by the hurricanes and all loved ones were safe. I have had no internet or access to news while it's all been going on so have no idea of the devastation or where was affected. Now i have both, i have some catching up to do.

Enjoy your trip Kristie. Looking forward to hearing all about it.

Hope you feel better soon Annerlee. Look forward to seeing you about again.

Did you get the bite checked j'mom? I agree with the others. Better safe than sorry.

Sounds like you have a lot on Peggy. Dublin sounds like good timing. Boundaries are definitely required. I have had problems with checking emails etc. outside of work hours and it's not good. I had to be really strict with myself. I struggled a little this last 2 weeks of being off work but i just about managed it. Not looking forward to catching up on Monday. Talking of work, I will be starting as a classroom assistant on a hypnotherapy practitioner course for the upcoming academic year at the place I did my course this last year. Really excited about it.

Just heard about the terror attack here. I'm thinking i preferred no access to news now.

How are you settling in to the new place Janice?

Phew. I think I'm done. You guys have been busy chatting while I was away. Lol.

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys.

We gave in and lit our woodburner last night. We had hoped to wait until October but it was only 10C in the boat yesterday morning and loads of condensation. We weren't able to have the fire on whilst our guests were here because the sofa bed is too close to the fire when it is out. But last night we had one. It ended up being 28C in the boat and we were sat in our pants. I struggled to sleep because it was so hot. Very difficult to regulate a fire even with the vents on it that can be shut down. The inbetween seasons are always tricky to manage.

Our heating has been coming on first thing in the mornings and in the evenings, Sarah. We usually manage to get through to October without it coming on, but it's been so chilly lately. Autumn seems to have taken hold a lot earlier this year.

message 3417: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same here. The heating turns on automatically when it gets below 19C in the house (and we're at home, not when we're working), and that happened last week. It's depressing!

message 3418: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I still had two papers to finish for my old job. I don't care about one of them but would like to get the other one done. I worked a bit on it when I just started my new job and it was still quiet, but I don't have time for it anymore. I just worked a few hours on it and it's finished! It feels so good to not have to think about that one for a while. I also emailed my professor with what I have done with the other paper so far and told her that I won't have time to finish it anytime soon, and that perhaps someone else can do it. Feels good to have that not looming over me anymore either!

Now it's time to read a book but the weather can't make up it's mind. It's sunny with clouds, and when it's sunny it's nice and warm enough to read outside, but as soon as a cloud moves in front of the sun it's too chilly. And it alternates like every 5 or 10 minutes. I have also opened and closed the door to the garden 20 times today already.

Our heater broke before we went overseas. We were always going to get rid of it, but were waiting on money or necessity. Wasn't planning on it and the car breaking at the same time before we went overseas. Haven't replaced it yet or booked anyone in. I mean it's spring. Who needs heating?

It's a slow process. I have my office set up and am working away. I have to have the lighting changed because it's a bit dark.

The upstairs is pretty much unpacked. I have to buy a new dresser since the old one wouldn't fit in my bedroom. It has a new home downstairs for sewing supplies.

I'm loving my new bed. It's so comfy!

I'm still waiting for the couch/love seat and recliner to arrive. So I'm camped out in the living room on a lawn chair.

Maybe you could come help me unpack. I hate packing and unpacking. I went down to my boxes to find the book I want to start reading today. It isn't going to happen because I can't find it.

I'm all ready for Halloween. Have lights for the balcony, and candy. I'm so excited. I never had any kids come to the door at the apartment. Now, I live amongst kids so expect to see a few ghosts and goblins. People laugh and remind me that it's over a month away.

Same here! It's gotten chilly very quickly but given the weather systems in some other parts of the world, I feel very lucky :-)

We've just lit the fire and the flames are flickering and crackling up the chimney nicely. We are snug. Nothing to do but relax in front of the telly or maybe pick up a book. Gotta love autumn!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I worked myself into a complete exhausted state outside in my yard today. I had people working for me too, cutting blackberry bushes in my side yard, while I worked in the back. Weeds are the most successful things that grow in my yard anymore. After all of the 100F and 90F weather we have had all summer, we are supposed to get a week of rain. I had to put all the lawn equipment away and cover things up after I was already too tired. I am coming down with a cold too, I guess. My nose is sunburned, my head is stuffed up and my legs and feet ache like crazy. I couldn't do anything else, so have been in bed since 6:30pm, reading.
I just finished The Paris Wife and caught up on all of the posts.

message 3429: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks for the compliments and well wishes. Janice - I do feel good about what has been done, but I hate that I hurt so badly when I finally get a chance to do it. I hate getting old! I didn't sleep well, but early this morning my legs finally stopped hurting after my second Aleve. I'm not coming down with a head cold though. The congestion must have been from all the dust when I was mowing and raking the dry grass. I slept in and listened to an audio book until I couldn't stay in the house any longer. The rain did not materialize until 2:00pm and then was only a small shower. I worked outside for an hour and then cleaned up to go have dinner with family. I worked outside for another hour when I got back. No more rain, but it has cooled way down. I may have to close up the house tonight. I'm hoping I can work outside for an hour in the morning before I go to work, if it isn't raining. There is just a little left to finish. My main garden bed is just about filled with mulch to decompose over the winter but the other is still full of weeds. I haven't had a vegetable garden for several years but I want to have one next year. I have some daylily seeds to start and hollyhock seed heads to scatter.

Travis - I used to keep Henry Winehard Private Reserve for my after yard work reward, but I must have finished off the last bottle (or my granddaughter did). I used to keep a case in the garage because that was what a friend of mine liked. I have never been a beer drinker, but I do like a Henry's on a nice hot day!

message 3430: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, and Rusalka - I would love to come and help you in your garden, but it is a little far for a weekend getaway. Working in someone else's dirt is always so much more fun. It doesn't seem like work then.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments /sigh so true.

And I don't think many things taste as good as a beer after a day of long work. Lexx didn't drink beer for years, as he didn't like it, but even he agreed that there was something almost magical in one after a day of labour.

It's okay, I've taught him about good beer since.

message 3432: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Especially for us being in the fall brew season. I wait all year for octoberfest to come out. And it doesn't seem to matter who makes it. I haven't had one I disliked yet. Can't say the same for other brews. Like hard cider. Who can mess up hard cider. Well I had the most bitter tasteless hard cider last year. I can't even describe it's nastiness. The same with pumpkin ale. They can vary immensely. Once you isolate the ones that suit you I love it but I've had some so bad I was scared to even try any ever again.

message 3433: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I am starting to get like that with coffee Travis. During my time off this last couple of weeks we've had coffee in a number of places and the vast majority of them have been not to my liking. I'm a bit fussy I know. I like strong coffee but it has to have milk and I like a bit of froth too. It's not a cappuccino as that has too much milk in. I thought I'd found the answer in a macchiato with milk and froth but it varies too much between cafes. Recently, one of the servers said that it sounded more like a flat white so I ordered one. It's just a small cappuccino surely. Just coffee flavoured milk. Then the next place I explained my predicament and she said that perhaps there was only 1 shot of espresso in it when it should typically have 2. So I tried that and it still tasted the same. Only one place seems to be able to get it right. Coffee isn't cheap and I feel like I might as well just drink tea. But I liking having coffee out. Grr. I think I need to draw a picture of what I want and present it to them.

message 3434: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments A flat white should be in a tea cup sized cup. They should be 1/3 coffee (you can make them one shot or a double, but the standard here is one) to about 2/3s milk. It should have a very small layer of froth, which shouldn't be froth, just creamy milk that makes a layer on top to stop it spilling as you carry it. I was so glad that Europe now knows what a flat white is this trip, after having to order lattes (too much milk, too little coffee) or caps (and you make caps weird. Who fills half the cup with froth? It's ridiculous) the last couple of times I visited. But they were still hit and miss.

There is an amazing Icelandic cafe in Manchester we found which was the best coffee we had in the UK. Bit of a trek for you, but we found it after Lexx helped a family through a lock, so depends on your commitment ;)

Straight up, you want a double shot, or a doppio. Just make that the default, particularly in the UK, no matter what you order. Up the coffee intensity.

Sounds like you may want a piccolo. Never seen one over there, but may be an option for you?

message 3435: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I had to give up coffee due to acid reflux last year

message 3436: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think a double shot is the way to go indeed Rusalka. I recall you mentioning the piccolo before but I've not seen it listed anywhere. Just been looking and a cortado looks promising. I might try that next time.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Back from my beach trip! The first half with my friends was great. I'll try to share some of the dolphin pictures I managed to capture a little later. The ocean was beautiful, but filled with jelly fish. The weather was perfect and it was an all around good time.

The second half of the trip I met up with my husband and some of his friends. It was HORRIBLE! I'm not the biggest fan of this group my husband is friends with and after this trip, I'll never go anywhere with them again. Not even to do something around home. Never. Again. They drink way too much, cuss way too much, they're violent, judgmental, and bigots.
Without going into all of the details: there was a fight in a restaurant with another table and 3 people from the group I was with went to jail. I was going to drive myself home first thing the following morning but my husband talked me into staying. I spent as little time with the group as possible.

I think catch a release is the norm here. I've never heard of anywhere requiring you to kill the animal, whether nuisance or not. Although I know a lot of people that wouldn't bother trying to catch them at all, just kill them. And some people I know would try to keep them as pets if ther're babies, which is illegal here.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Peggy, I'm jealous of your Dublin trip! You'll have a great time I'm sure. I hope things are calming down a little for you now that you have that paper finished (or almost anyway).

@Sarah, so glad to hear the trip with your friends went well. Did you get to try out the new anchor? ;-)

I'm with you on liking the limited news reports. I didn't even know about the attack. So glad no one was killed this time. It really is scary how often these things keep happening!

@Cherie, hope you are feeling better. Despite the exhaustion, you must feel a sense of accomplishment getting all of that done.

The week before last it was really cool here and the morning I left for my beach trips last week was cold and rainy. I was asking someone if it wasn't awfully early to be having such cool temps and they agreed that it was. But with Mississippi weather being what it is, we're back to summer temps now. I'm curious to see what our winter will be like here. Last year was very mild so I'm thinking this year will either follow that trend or be really harsh for the area, no in between.

@Jmom, did you get the bite checked out? Your symptoms remind me of my neighbor's. She was bitten by a brown recluse but didn't know it for a very long time. When she finally went to get checked out and diagnosed, she had almost waited too long and had to spend a couple of weeks in the hospital and then several more weeks at home on bed rest.
