Lisa, have a pleasant and restful trip.

Sarah, it sounds cool. I haven't read ant of the authors, though, so I can't help.

Sarah | 18550 comments It is my last day at work today before a 2 week break. Our friends from Austria arrive on Monday and will be staying with us. Tomorrow we will be taking our boat down on to the river for the first time and arriving in Bristol harbour on Saturday. We'll stay there until our friends arrive and then we'll head back on to the canal, aiming to get as far along as possible and checking out the villages/towns/cities along the way. I'm looking forward to it. So I'm not going to have much time to read or check in on GR unfortunately.

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments Enjoy your time with your friends, Sarah.

My brother and his wife recently returned from London. They have friends who have a permanent mooring for their narrowboat. I'm not sure if my brother said Picadilly area, but that's what sticks in my mind. They took my brother and s-i-l on the canals in their narrowboat. He was quite impressed.

message 3210: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments What would be considered a mansion in the narrowboat world. They can't all be the same size are they?

message 3211: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys.

Hi cool Janice. I'd like to take my boat around London some time. It would be a great experience.

If we're talking strictly narrowboats Travis, the largest that you could have is 72ft. Any bigger and you wouldn't fit in locks or be able to turn around anywhere. You can get widebeam canal boats which are up to double the width of a narrowboat. And technically you could have a 72ft widebeam which would be massive. I think it would be difficult to navigate the system though with a beast like that and there would be certain canals you couldn't go on. If it was just to be a glorified house then it would be perfect. Then we have the Dutch barges which are bigger than narrowboats. We see them on the canals but they are much more suited to the rivers. They tend to have extra head space too. If you're over 6 feet tall in my boat you'll end up with a crick in your neck if you stand up for too long.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments We got lucky with the storms yesterday. There were lots of reports of tornadoes, but not too much damage and no deaths.

Hope you have a great time with your friends, Sarah!

Finally Friday and it's a long weekend in the States! Labor Day is Monday so I'm off work and taking advantage of the extra day to go see my husband for the weekend. He isn't going to be off work, but that's okay, we'll still enjoy every minute we do have together.

message 3218: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yesterday there was something I wanted to work on so I figure I'll just get up early. So I get up at 330 and go to toolshed . We break open big straw bales and the chickens scatter straw all over. Ends up I'm parked on several inches of straw. I lie down on it to get underneath what I want to fix and end up falling asleep. I mean this straw mattress is like the most comfortable thing I've ever laid on in this moment. My wife ends up getting up at 4 and goes for a run. She comes back and decides to see me at toolshed. She says she came in there were tools out around me but it appeared I was just sleeping. So she asked whatcha doing. I raised my head spit gibberish at her and went back to sleep. Now I'm thinking great now she's always going to wonder if I'm really working or am I just off napping. Now this morning I had stuff to do so I got up at 230 and got it all done. Did anyone come checking on me today. No. Of course not.

message 3219: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments That's hilarious, Travis. I don't know how you manage to function at those hours.

We used to sleep on straw-filled mattresses when I went to summer camp. I prefer my memory foam mattress that I have now.

message 3220: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments Travis, noone will ever believe you're working again! Your credibility is blown lol Sleeping on a bed of straw would be torture for me - hayfever!!

Not been on line much last few days. Funeral stuff followed by migrane. Back on my feet today but still wobbly.

message 3221: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments LOL Travis! What time do you go to bed if you plan to get up at 230 or 330?

message 3222: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah I think the straw bed would be a novelty that would be short lived in it's enjoyment.

There's a certain peacefulness waking in the wee hours. Like the whole world is asleep and it's just you.

Preferably I'd probably like to go to bed early Peggy but I went to bed at 1030 or 11 both nights. It seems like I never get to bed early if I want to wake early. On average I sleep about 5 hours a night anyway so it's not that big of a deal to me to occasionally only get 3 hours and then occasionally I go the other way and get 8 but I always wake exhausted if I sleep 8 hours. It's weird I know.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11301 comments Travis sivarT wrote: "Did anyone come checking on me today. No. Of course not."

So funny, Travis. You sleep 5 hours in your bed, but how many do you sleep on the hay? ;) Your credibility is really on check.

My mom always says that her husband only volunteered to help with a chore twice a year, and of course her sister in law would show up at that precise moment, finding her sitting and he doing the dishes. Then the comments about how lucky she would start. :)

message 3224: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Went to concert last night.
Trapt- I only know 2 songs so meh.
Adelitas Way - I went especially for them and they were great I'll see again if opportunity comes up
Sick Puppies - awesome as advertised by everyone who's ever seen them live. Also on the let's see again list
Drowning Pool - I've seen them many times but this current singer. Wow. So good. Just like original drowning pool I'd see them again since they just have a way of being in shows I plan to see anyway and they always bring it Everytime
Scott Stapp. Look great songwriter with very deep powerful songs. Great voice. I've always found Creed songs depressing and left before it was over they were making the wife and I fall into depression. Actually a lot of people left. They had all these high energy bands play first and it was a mood killer for us. Just not a good live band for us. Put them in with theory of a Deadman and candlebox who are both bands that disappointed me live although I like their music much

message 3225: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We started about 20 ft from stage but the sound was bouncing off wall and hurting my ear so we move back to about 75 ft away. Building was only like a 50x 100 anyway. Probably held 400 people. For $75 you could go to a meet and greet bbq with the bands before the show and hang in their trailers after the show. I didn't. But you could

Sarah | 18550 comments At least your wife took you for sleeping rather than dead laying down on the ground surrounded by your tools.

That hurricane looks scary. I hope it winds down a bit before it gets anywhere near you.

Sounds like you had a good time at the concert Travis.

We arrived it Bristol harbour at the weekend and have been enjoying the novelty of being in the heart of the city. Having a great time. Feels like we're on holiday even though I only work around the corner. Very surreal experience bringing the boat in here. Our friends arrive from Austria tonight so we're all ready now.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I was just reading the predictions on my weather app and they never have Irma exceed a category 4 and they have it dropping to a category 3 while it's still a long way from the US.

message 3234: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I've been reading about Irma, as it's going to hit St Maarten first and I follow a couple of businesses and people after our trip there last year. No idea how that island would cope with a cat 3 or 4. Still pretty scary stuff.

Sorry, I've been so very sick, and busy, since the middle of last week. I have read the whole thread and have lots of thoughts but I can't remember them. Lexx watched me walk into a wall earlier today, after putting lemon juice into his red bull instead of my glass. I'm a little ill. You have to laugh though.

They have had several category 3's and at least 1 level 4. When we went to St Maartens, I recall hearing about the devastation caused by one of them - must have been in the 1990's. Sorry, I don't recall much more than that.

I hope you feel better soon. Walking into walls is not a good thing. Maybe it's time to see a doctor.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Heh thanks everyone. I know it's a virus, so it's just keep warm, keep fluids up, rest and ride it out job. There's a massive flu epidemic going on over here at the moment (I thought we'd missed it), so trying to stay away from medical people in order to free them up for more needy.

I have really bad depth perception due to a lazy eye (not muscular, just doesn't do much) at the best of times, and knock into things coz I misjudge them. It gets worse when I'm sick or tired, as I stop thinking about compensating. Yesterday I was all of the above. It's pretty funny.

Oh I am sure they are used to it, but they are just so small. I think I read it will hit St Barts first, which is apparently tiny.

So since we've been away, we've had a few magpie families move into our area. This is an Australian Magpie:
description

They are beautiful birds, who have a gorgeous song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYEYc... and are very friendly and clever. They are rather large, about 20cms tall. In spring (now) while nesting, the males attack any threat they perceive to the nest by "swooping" but they recognise faces and know who is a friend and leave those people alone. We came home last week and were astounded there were 15 that were eating out of our hands, and jumping on Lexx's lap.

Yesterday, we were feeding the chickens, and the 15 came back. And then another 15. And then another. Lexx counted 47, I counted 49. It was rather insane and slightly Hitchcocky. I like birds, but turns out that's my limit.

description

It's hard to see, but each photo has 15-16 birds in it. The top one is me standing in the laundry.

message 3244: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments That is strange that you'd have so many birds come to visit. I think it would make me nervous. We have lots of geese forming up and starting to fly south. I can actually hear them honking in this quieter neighborhood.

message 3245: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments Ok, I was going to say that those birds are so cool and really pretty, but then I saw the Hitchcock pics and now it's a bit creepy. lol

message 3246: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I have 5 singing outside my study window as we speak. So there are perks, but jeez it's a lot! The chickens aren't super happy with the situation.

message 3247: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

I'm back from the Scottish Highlands. We had a fantastic and relaxing time. Saw some amazing and beautiful places and we got lucky with the weather too. Really didn't want to come home, although it's great to be back with you all again :)

message 3249: by Margo (last edited Sep 05, 2017 02:15AM) (new)

Margo | 11668 comments I think anyone who's seen the Birds will never feel save around them again! We were attacked by some seagulls once in Jersey. We were sitting in a harbour enjoying the evening and eating bags of hot chips when a flock of gulls decided they wanted some and got very agressive about it! We had to run for the car - it was scary!!

I've heard a few articles about such behavior since. Apparantly it's becoming more common where people feed them human food.

message 3250: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Would make me nervous too if there were that many of the same birds sitting in our garden all of a sudden.

Sounds like you had a great trip Lisa!
