Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments The hurricane sounds pretty scary! I hope everyone in its path stays safe.

message 3152: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I really don't know how many members we have in Texas, but I know there are some out there. Hoping everyone stays safe in the coming days.

My husband and I are prepared to open our home to individuals or a family in need of shelter in the storm's aftermath, which is predicted to leave many people homeless and/or without utility services.

message 3153: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Just turned on to see what this hurricane was. Wow. Quite a beast rolling in there . I guess the only good thing is it's hitting land so directly going completely off the water it should help break it up fairly quick. Vs one running up a coastline. Of course if youre in the path there's no good news.

message 3154: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Weather predictions are for catastrophic flooding because of the storm hanging out for days and days -- potentially all week!!

message 3155: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments So scary, TJ. I hope everyone took the warnings as seriously as they should have and evacuated areas as needed. I heard on the news that there was concern that some people didn't think it would be as bad as they were reporting. It's always worrisome when people don't take it seriously. Though I hope it does end more quickly than they expect.

message 3156: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments It is scary, Kristie. Totally hoping the weather predictions will be overblown, and the storm will poop out or head back out to open ocean more quickly than predicted.

message 3157: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments More bad news. My uncle (aunts husband) died yesterday. He suffered from lung cancer and emphysema. We're just waiting for details and we will be heading to Mayo for a few days.
You get to a certain age and family seem to drop like flies taking you childhood memories with them. Sometimes life sucks.

message 3158: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That is one thing with hurricanes at least there is usually some type of warning. They might get the path wrong but at least people k ow it's coming unlike tornados and earthquakes. Hopefully it fizzles out quicker than a week of churning. It's been a rough year with spring having the massive wild fire then this hurricane the South Central US has really been hammered this year

message 3159: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sorry to hear about your uncle Margo :(

Stay safe for everyone in Texas!

message 3160: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sorry to hear that Margo.

Yes I saw that people have been evacuated and also disaster zones have been declared to free up funding in advance to speed up response time for aid. Seems like a good move to me.

message 3161: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Sorry to hear about your uncle, Margo. How very sad :(

message 3162: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I was reading farmers were moving cattle to higher ground. Which with an expected 35 inches of rain not sure where higher ground is. Then the combines are racing to harvest as much rice and as much of the record yieldong cotton crop as they can as they're going to lose the rest of the crop almost definitely. Crops are very vulnerable to heavy rain and wind if they're ready to combine. I've seen a passing thunderstorm lay fields flat in minutes

message 3163: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Sorry to hear about your Uncle, Margo.

We have major summer storms here too, Travis. And cyclones up north (what we call hurricanes). You hear of a whole community's crop, and thus income, wiped out in the matter of minutes when one of the other hits.

message 3164: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments Welcome back, Rusalka! Your trip sounded amazing. I hope your ankle heals quickly.

Yikes, I hope everyone in Texas is safe. That hurricane sounds crazy.

Sorry to hear about your aunt's husband Margo. How is the uncle you are caring for doing?

I'm all moved in - boxes everywhere! My office is set up, internet installed, and I'm ready to get to work.

Congratulations, Janice! It must feel great to be all moved in.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Woo hoo! Now you get to play the "What the hell is in *this* box?" game.

message 3167: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments welcome home rusalka and hope you heal soon.

janice, my uncle that is living with us is doing well. his scars are healing nicely. in fact the area on his arm where the skin were taken is now "over healing". They are treating it with steroid cream to too much skin growing!

The funeral is Wednesday so we're heading across monday. My ill uncle insists on coming as it is his sisters family. I don't think it will do him any good at all but I understand when he says he must be there.

We had awful flooding in the north of our country earlier this week. There were pictures of mudslide that had caused a car to be propelled through a wall into someones kitchen. All this climate change is scary stuff.

I'm not sure who here will be here is affected by the onset of all the wind and rain, so everyone stay safe!

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments Rusalka wrote: "Woo hoo! Now you get to play the "What the hell is in *this* box?" game."

It's more like "Where the hell is it?" game. I need double A batteries and I have no idea where they are. But, a bonus is that I'm finding money. I was clearing out a drawer while packing and found a $100 bill. This morning, looking for the batteries, I opened a "fake book box" where I knew I had at one time tucked away some batteries and found a $20 bill.

I'm glad to hear that your uncle is healing well. I do understand about him wanting to go to the funeral. Hopefully, it won't be too much of a strain on him.

message 3170: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I think since your uncle was self conscious about going in public it's a good sign that he wants to go to the funeral really.

message 3171: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11301 comments I've been reading your comments but didn't have too much time to reply unfortunately. I am driving my daughter tomorrow to college. Yeah, my first baby is leaving. As exciting as sad.

Margo I am sorry about your uncle. What a hard year it has been for you and your family. And regarding your your other uncle, I thought the same thing as Travis. It is probably a good sign he is willing to go out and meet people.

Rusalka, glad to know about your trip. Hope work treats you well at least the first days.

Janice, finding money is better than Christmas!

message 3172: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments You know I didn't even think about his disfigurement - there is so much else keepers

His face has healed a lot but I think people will be inclined to double take and then look away. They won't want to be seen to stare. I'm not sure what the kids will make of it. They range from 1 to 12, so there will be different levels of understanding. They were all very fond of him, he is great with kids, so he'll be devastated if they shrink away from him.

message 3175: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments I saw a pic of some elderly people waiting to be rescued in Texas. They were in wheelchairs and on oxygen and waist deep in water. So sad. I hope they didn't have to wait too long like that. :(

message 3176: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments That's terrible. Those poor people. Something good to see is how many regular people are getting out there and helping their neighbors and community.
My brother and family are sheltering in place. There have been some folks rescued by boat in their neighborhood, but for now they're still dry. A friend's' daughter is living on second level of her house because first floor is flooded. She'll be moving out soon but isn't in emergency situation.

message 3177: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments That's unbelievable to me that someone could have to live on the second floor of their house because the first floor is flooded and not have it be an emergency situation. I mean, she must be without electricity at a minimum and is basically trapped up there. I can only imagine how dire other people's situations must be to have to put her off like that. I hope they get to her soon.

I agree, TJ. It is wonderful to see people pitching in and helping their neighbors. I'm glad your brother and his family are still dry. Hopefully, they make it through without too much damage.

message 3178: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments To me too Kristie. But it makes sense, given the circumstances. If it happened to us right now we would for sure be an emergency, but in Texas right now it's so bad that you just have to cope with anything not life threatening :( It shouldn't be like this though!

message 3179: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Yes, normally it would be considered more urgent, but not under current conditions. She's got water and cell phone service but no electric or gas. Drinking bottled water tho. Has nonperishable food.

message 3180: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments Thank goodness she has food and clean water with her. She won't forget this experience any time soon! Yikes.

It never occurred to me that the water in the canal doesn't flow. I've never seen or heard of narrow boats here and all we have are lakes and rivers. Even in a lake in the types of boats people I know have, an anchor would be required simply because of the wind.

Oh my goodness, that picture is so heartbreaking! I have spent little to no time online or where the news was on the past several days, all of my news has came from word of mouth. I knew it was bad in TX, but I didn't realize how bad until I started seeing articles like this one today. I hope the worst is over and everyone stays safe.

message 3188: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Eek. I have been watching with curiosity on Peter V Brett's UK tour. I knew he would be visiting Bath but there were no details on it. They've just been released and he will be attending there along with 4 other grimdark authors including Joe Abercrombie and Mark Lawrence. In addition to book signings, the authors will have a panel discussion and you get to hang out with the authors a bit. I've just booked my ticket. I'm so excited. I need to come up with some interesting questions in case I speak to them. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Now I need to work out what to get signed as most of the books I own by these authors are on my kindle. Maybe I get them to sign my kindle?

message 3189: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Nice Sarah! Kindle should introduce a digital signature function for these kind of things ;-) I haven't read any books by those authors so I have no inspiration for questions except the very standard ones you've probably thought of yourself.

I have a job interview this afternoon and I'm the only candidate. If they like me and I like them/the project, the job is mine. I'm a bit nervous. At least when there's 5 other people coming for an interview and you don't get the job it's not so personal (like I may have been suitable for the job, but the other person may have had more experience) but now it feels like a lot more pressure. If I don't get this job, it feels like it's really because of me and I'm not good enough.

message 3190: by Lisa (last edited Aug 30, 2017 03:10AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments That sounds exciting, Sarah!

Peggy, good luck with your interview! I'm sure you will do fine :)

I'm off to the Scottish Highlands tomorrow for a few days break. I am so excited! It's so beautiful there and you really feel as though you can truly escape and get away from it all. I've had a pretty rough few months so it will be nice to have a change of scene for a little while.

message 3191: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Enjoy your break Lisa! I would love to visit the Scottish Highlands someday. I've only been to Edinburgh.

message 3192: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Thanks, Peggy! I love Edinburgh, but it's fair to say the Highlands are my favourite ;)

message 3194: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments I really enjoyed Joe Abercrombie's books, and have only read one of Mark Lawrence's. I need to get back to his series. I wish I had questions for you. I'd be just sitting there star struck, mouth agape if I was to attend. I can't wait to hear your comments, Sarah.

Good luck with the job interview, Peggy.

Probably gets asked all the time but I'd be interested it Brett has considered doing a graphic novel version of the series. Would be great visually I think

message 3197: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Congrats Peggy! You had it in the bag really being the only candidate!

Good question Travis. I'll keep a note of that one.

message 3199: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments That sounds cool, Sarah. Perhaps you could have them sign your ticket to the event then you could frame it afterwards. Short of buying physical copies of your favorite book by each author to be signed, that is all I can come up with.

Congrats on the job, Peggy. Glad it went well and the nerves were for naught.

Enjoy the Highlands, Lisa. Hopefully the escape will recharge your batteries.

I'm back at my office today after spending the last two days out of town at a sister company's office. It was an okay trip and I arrived back home at a decent hour last night, but I'm exhausted today and I can't seem to concentrate on anything. I keep thinking about taking a sick day and going home to rest. But I know as soon as I get home I'll probably be wide awake. I could take my computer with me and work from home I suppose.

message 3200: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Oh good idea Kimey about the event ticket.

Enjoy your trip Lisa.
