I think you are very right, Rusalka
And is also good not not to force/press kids to kiss or hug somebody... otherwise they learn is OK to accept displeasing/unwanted body-touching

message 3055: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments I agree, Mariab. I remember having a couple of people being very upset with me when my girls were younger and I told them that the girls did not have to give them hugs or kisses. Yes, they have to acknowledge you and say hello or goodbye, but they do not need to give you physical affection. Most people were ok with it, but a couple were very insulted and thought it was quite rude.

Sarah | 18550 comments I totally get that "wanting your own bed" feeling. I often find when travelling about that places don't have comfy chairs to just sit about in. I always miss a comfy chair and the opportunity to just curl up and watch a film especially when I'm tired or hungover.

Sarah | 18550 comments We've basically finished our bathroom on the boat. Just need to put the mirror and toothbrush holder back up and wire up the lights and then we're done. It has taken us a long time to do this as we had to completely gut the bathroom, take up the floor, clean/paint the steel, reballast, refloor before doing anything else. Then we had to put walls up, makes the shower sides and all the cabinets from scratch as nothing is standard size and cannot just go to a store and get an off the shelf bathroom. Then we had paint everything and plumb everything in. My partner has done the vast majority of it with me as helper. It's the first time he has done anything like this and I think he's done amazing. I am so pleased that we are basically there with it. Thought I'd share a before/after picture with you all. (Top picture is how the bathroom used to look. Not best quality pictures but hopefully it gives an idea of what it was/is like now).

Your new bathroom looks awesome, Sarah. You and your partner did a fantastic job. He should be very proud of himself for what all had to be done.

message 3071: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11302 comments Lisa, I don't know if I am remembering it right, but I think only 14 states in the US would see the eclipse complete.
We are visiting Kingston, in Ontario, and here the sun was supposed to be seen a 65% covered by the moon.
There were astronomy students with a telescope by the lake today so I could see he eclipse for a few seconds. It really is amazing.

message 3072: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah it started in Oregon and cut through to Virgina or North Carolina. Just felt like a cloudy day in ny

message 3073: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments Lisa, I'm in Virginia and we were supposed to have about 87% coverage. To be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed. It was pumped up as if it was going to get pretty dark around here and it didn't. Plus, we had some cloud cover so it wasn't a super clear view. My biggest issue was that I didn't get the glasses, so I couldn't look directly at it. I used a homemade box viewer, which was kind of cool, but takes away from the effect somewhat. At one point, there was a light cloud haze over it, so we could look at it for a second and that was pretty cool.

We are expecting another eclipse a little further north from here in 7 years. Some of my family lives not too far from where the path will be, so it should be even better viewing, assuming clear weather. I will be more prepared for that one with solar glasses! Seven years notice should be enough. ;)

message 3074: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah south Carolina was in line. NY is in the path in 2024. I can't wait. Ok I'm lying. I mean I don't actually care

hahaha... The next one goes over the north of NH. I have family that live in state, so assuming someone still lives there in 7 years, it might provide a better view. I will definitely go with glasses next time though.

I don't think I'd want to be in NY during an eclipse, at least not in the city. Too many people, especially if people come in from out of town to view it in the big city, which they would be likely to do. Those big crowds aren't really fun for me.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm a long way from NY City. About 45 minutes from Canada maybe 3hrs from Vermont. Just off lake Ontario

message 3078: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments NYC isn't even in the path of totallity cuts through buffalo up along lake Erie and lake Ontario then I think it hits canada skipping Vermont and Maine for the most part

I'll bet it feels good to have them all organized.

message 3084: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments We had cloud cover here, not that we were supposed to see any of the eclipse. I commented that it sure seemed dark. Just as I said that, my homepage on the internet reported that the eclipse had started. So that was it - just a tiny bit darker.

message 3085: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments We had a solar eclipse a couple years back. I just put a pin hole through a piece of paper. We had cloud cover too which was a bit annoying. I think the same happened when we had one about a decade ago. I wish the weather would be good on events like this. It is like when the meteor showers occur. Half the time it's cloudy and you can't see anything.

message 3086: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Love the bathroom, Sarah! congrats on all of that hard word paid off!

We had something like 93% coverage for the eclipse here. It was pretty cool to see. Someone brought in glasses we could share at work thankfully, everywhere has been sold out for the past couple weeks. It was amazing to me that the tiny little sliver of sun that was left at the maximum still kept it as bright as it was outside. It was like mid evening bright.

My husband was in South Carolina in the path of totality, but they were having a thunderstorm at the time and couldn't see anything. He said it did get dark and it was pretty freaky with all of the lightening going on at that time.

My boss was driving on the Natchez Trace Parkway which is a road/national park that goes through Mississippi, part of Alabama, and Tennessee. You don't normally see deer out during the middle of the day, but he said they were running around in abundance during the eclipse. It makes me wonder what animals think during these events.

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Kimey and Mariab.

I bought a Game of Thrones card game which arrived yesterday. I bought it in preparation for when our friends stay with us for 2 weeks at the beginning of September. The plan is to go boating but the British Summer is being very British this year and who knows whether we'll get good weather or not. I thought we should have a contingency plan, especially for the evening. So today I have spent a couple of hours playing the tutorial game with myself to learn the rules. Then I can play with my partner without him getting frustrated that neither of us know the rules. Then we'll both have a vague idea of what the hell to do when we play with our friends. From what I've seen of it so far, it's really good. Annoyingly, it is in quite a biggish box. My criteria for board/card games is that they need a small box because storage is at a premium on the boat. It does often limit us though which is why I only have one other card game (plus expansion - Catan). It's quite different to that one which I'm pleased about.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments " Then I can play with my partner without him getting frustrated that neither of us know the rules."

Lol Sarah, that's EXACTLY what happens with me and my partner when we try a new game. I read the rules and we try it out, but of course I have to look things up or forget certain rules, which annoys him. I tell him every time that he could also read through the rules before we start, but that's never going to happen ;-)

I'm on my way now to my goodbye dinner for my current job. Only 3 more days (tomorrow, friday, next week tuesday) to go there.

message 3089: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm pleased it's not just us then Peggy. Some games can be complex and take a bit of getting used to. I realise even now that i got things wrong earlier when i played. Now I know though so hopefully it will out properly next time.

Enjoy your goodbye dinner! It is nice they are doing something like that for you.

message 3090: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I always try to read the main parts of the rules aloud so maybe everyone gets the gist of new games. It usually ends up with the same situation you two described though. Everyone frustrated and me trying to skim back through the rules and figure it out. lol.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11302 comments I am famous for making rules up if I don't remember them...

message 3092: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Drama at work today! One worker shouting at another. Very uncomfortable. This has been building for a while, but I wasn't expecting it when it happened. I don't want to get involved and have been trying to stay out of it as much as possible lately.

I went and talked to my boss just a little bit a few minutes ago to fill him in on what has been going on between these two since he's not here much. I doubt it did any good for either party involved, but I felt I needed to. I could tell he's already got his mind made up about the situation though. Regardless of what happens now, work is going to suck. I try to stay out of the drama, but there are only 5 of us in this department so its impossible to avoid it entirely.

message 3093: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That's rubbish Kimey. A negative work environment is not a nice place to be. Hopefully you don't get dragged in to it all, although I can imagine how hard that might be with such a small team. Let's hope your boss sorts things out quickly.

message 3094: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments Sarah - That's very considerate of you to figure out the game before your guests get there. I'm sure they'll appreciate having someone already know the rules.

Kimey - That's too bad that there's drama at work. That makes for a difficult environment.

message 3095: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments The thing with living card games is that they can be complicated in their rules. As it's game of thrones based which has tonnes of characters in anyway, i knew it would probably be even more complicated. So thought I'd best check it out. It wasn't as bad as i thought though but definitely glad I've given it a go.

I've had a nice long weekend and I'm back to work today. Just 2 days before the bank holiday weekend. It is a busy 2 days though. At least i haven't had to get up at silly o'clock. Now I'm only 20 minute walk to the train station which takes me straight to Bristol.

message 3096: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That sounds bad Kimey. Hopefully things turn better soon, it's no fun working in a tense environment.

I had great fun at my goodbye dinner yesterday. There was a speech and I got some very nice gifts :) I don't think I will miss my job in itself much, but I will miss my colleagues! Luckily the people I met at my new job are very nice too :)

I also went on a job interview last week for a research job with a health organization (for 9-12 hours a week, which is a nice addition to the 24 hours I work at my new job) and they have invited me for a second interview next week (as the only candidate). If that turns out well, they will offer me a job on the spot.

message 3097: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That sounds great Peggy about the other job. Lots of new starts for you.

message 3098: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah drama sucks. My wife has 6 siblings. After a year of using WhatsApp I've come to find I really don't like one of her brothers. So I quit using WhatsApp. 3 weeks I've been absent and 4 of her siblings started a chat minus the one I don't like. Then yesterday her other brother had been asking where I've been so they figure bring him in. Not the one I don't like but a different brother. He comes in and starts in how secret chats are tearing the family apart and this chat makes him sad. It's like whoa. This is a drama free chat if youre going to bring drama I'm gonna have to go back boycotting WhatsApp. The past 3 weeks have been so peaceful. I believe if people annoy you or you just don't get along remove yourself if possible. My wife says they got little brother under control now but we'll see. I don't really need WhatsApp I have this group on Goodreads which is mostly drama free. Sure there may be a moment here or there but that's it a moment not a daily thing that never ends. That's the issue with the brother I don't like hell beat the dead horse bury it that unbury it just to beat it some more. Also this brother had many strikes on him already as a few occasions he's flat out called my wife a bitch. Lost track of how many times he's been so nasty with his poison tongue my wife has called me up crying. Hey if she wants to forgive and forget that's fine. I'm black listing the moron. Rant over. I guess that was a rant or rantish by nature I suppose

message 3099: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments And completely unrelated I just noticed a catepillar hanging from ceiling about to cocoon but not quite started. Which was kind of neat maybe I have my own little science experiment going on here

message 3100: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments Glad you had a nice dinner, Peggy. The right colleagues can make all the difference in a job. Good luck with your interview!

I hate drama too, Travis. Some people really enjoy it though. Those are the people that I try to avoid. It gets more complicated when it's family. Sorry to hear about your BIL. Sounds like he's the type that enjoys it.

Very cool about the caterpillar. Hopefully, you get a pretty butterfly and not a nasty moth. Lol It will be fun to watch, especially for the kids.
