Saw the trailer yesterday Sarah - looks amazing! I feel like the only one in the world who hasn't read it ! Well there's only one way to fix that ;-)

I'm sitting with my foot propped up on a stool in mega pain. Got a new leg brace last week - my right foot turns in and needs correction and the problem is getting worse. Well I wore to shops this morning and OMG it's a torture device!! It has cut right into the side of my heal and a nasty bruise is forming :-O

That sounds horrible and painful, Margo!

Also, you are not alone with Ready Player One. I haven't read it either.

message 2805: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That sounds horrible Margo. I hope it gets more comfortable soon. Or is it just not right and needs some adjusting?!

message 2806: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments Lisa, I tried to read Ready Player One and I gave up after 25+ pages. I may give it a try again if I'm desperate to read something after I have read ALL of my books on my TBR shelf.

message 2807: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments It is horrible and to make matters worse I can't find Ready Player One on audio and the kindle book doesn't have text-to-speech engaged! Not my day at all lol

message 2808: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I haven't read it either.

Margo, you need to be calling your doctor back. There is no way the brace is fitting your properly if it is cutting into you! They need to adjust it or get you a different one. In the meantime, try to stay off of it as much as possible.
How is your uncle? recovering well I hope.

I had a very rare lazy weekend with my husband. Normally on the weekends when he is home we are on the go nonstop. This weekend we both were feeling kind of blah. With the exception of running a couple of errands and going out to eat lunch one day, we didn't do anything. Just stayed around the house and watched movies. I couldn't tell you the last time we did that. It was quite nice!

message 2809: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's definitly available on audio Margo as Will Wheaton narrates it if I remember rightly.

message 2810: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11301 comments Oh Margo, I hope it gets better soon!
I am with you and Lisa, I haven't read READY PLAYER ONE.

A quite weekend sounds exactly like what I need right now, Kimey. :)

message 2811: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments Oh, Margo. So sorry to see that. I agree, you should call your doctor. Either it doesn't fit correctly or it needs additional padding or something. They need to fix that for you.

Kimey, that sounds like such a nice weekend.

message 2812: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments It is indeed a Wil Wheaton narration

message 2813: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19327 comments Ready Player One audio is available through Audible with Will Wheaton narrating.

message 2814: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments @kimey I'm going back to physio next week. I called to tell him and he wasn't very forthcoming - I think there may be budget issues!

My uncles doctors are pleased with his progress. They might let him home for a few weeks prior to his next surgery which ,I think is to rebuild his face. He looks like something out of a bad horror movie at the moment.

@Sarah, not available in ireland - regional restrictions!

message 2815: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60078 comments I'm sorry that you're struggling and in pain with your brace. I hope they can get it sorted for you quickly.

Good to hear that the doctors are pleased with your uncle's progress.

As for Ready Player One, maybe we should do a buddy read on it. When is the movie being released?

Margo, have you checked with your library? When we did a buddy read on The Shadow of the Wind, I couldn't get the audiobook from Audible because of regional restrictions, yet it was available from my library.

message 2816: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Re: Ready Player One. I haven't seen the trailer for the movie but the book was pretty awesome. Takes 40-50 pages to get up to speed, as I recall.

message 2817: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments The film is out in 2018 so you have plenty of time to do a buddy read!

@Janice, library only have Ready Player One in print. Might be worth me giving audible a text tho ;-)

Glad to hear your uncle is progressing well. I hope he continues to do so.
Can you put a thick sock on under your brace? Something to keep it from cutting and rubbing so bad until your appointment next week.

message 2820: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Glad to hear about your uncle's progress Margo.

I start my new job in 3.5 weeks and received information today on the first course I'll be teaching. It looks very interesting and fun, and I'm super excited to get started!

message 2821: by Kirila (new)

Kirila | 660 comments I just finished Ready Player One last weekend and now I see everybody is discussing it :) Perfect timing!

For me it also took 40-50 pages, but then it pulled me in. I enjoyed the read very much and I am looking forward for the movie, just watched the trailer.

message 2822: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ready Player One never appealed to me, but given that everyone is raving about it I might have to reconsider. I think the science fiction puts me off, but a lot of reviews talk about a trip down memory lane which sounds cool.

message 2823: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Nice! What is the course?

message 2825: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It's Academic Skills :)

message 2826: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments Kimey I've tried every kibd of sock. Hubby found a place online that actually moulds the brace to your foot which sounds like exactly what I need. Going to run it by my physio.

Peggy, best of luck. Can you tell me what Academic Skills involve? Sounds facinating.

message 2827: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I hope that helps Margo!

It's a course for first year students who have just left high school, so they learn for example how to find different kinds of scientific articles, how such articles are constructed and how to read them, to critically reflect on what they read, and later in the course also to write a short scientific review paper on their own.

The course runs throughout the whole academic year, and they have work lectures (which I'm going to supervise) in groups of 20 students in which these things are explained to them and during which they practice and have to make and hand in assignments.

It's a different system than at my current university, but I like the way this sounds and how it's set up.

message 2828: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sounds perfect Peggy. I could benefit from that course I reckon. Whilst talking of research papers, a neuroscientist wrote a spoof paper on The Force and midichlorians (from Star Wars if you don't know) and submiited it to 10 dubious scientific journals. It was acaepted and published in 3 journals, a 4th said they'd publish it if the researcher paid a fee and another asked him to make revisions and resubmit. Crazy!

message 2829: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments LOL, that's funny Sarah! A bit sad and dangerous too.. Every now and then those kind of things pop up, where researchers just submit something crappy to see what happens.

message 2830: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments @Sarah, that's the funniest thing I've heard in ages ;-D

Peggy that course sounds very useful - wish I'd had something similar when I was a student (such things didn't exist back in the dark age lol)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments That sounds like a very useful course, Peggy. Does the term start soon? Regular school starts back for most of my nieces and nephews next week and one other niece the following week. I think college courses start in mid august.

message 2832: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Holidays started about 2-3 weeks ago here. Uni starts again in the last week of August.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Does anyone else get very annoying pop ups on GR about the security certificate? I actually think it's just me, but I only have it on the GR site so I wanted to check.

The audio by Wil Wheaton was Fantastic, Anne, if you are into audio books. I know that it is available from Audible.

Margo | 11668 comments Woohoo - great news! Our patient is coming home wednesday 100% cancer free- they got everything :-)

He'll still need a lot of looking after. Still has to go though radiation, chemo just in case of any stray cells and potentially more plastic surgery once all that is over.

This is the best outcome we could have hoped for. Hurrah!!!

message 2850: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That is terrific Margo. I don't think we'll get that lucky over here. My uncle has some rare blood and bone marrow cancer and currently trying to overcome kidney failure. But. For there to be 2 uncle's with cancer and 1 be cured I mean that's 50% and I'd say that's pretty darn good. At least someone made it through. And I'm being completely sincere with that . You can't sit around wondering why this one and not that one and all that. Just glad you got a happy ending and hopefully he remains cancer free. That's always the next thing.
