KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Congrats on welcoming a new nephew into the world, Peggy! Nieces and nephews are the best! Is he your first?

@Travis, at least your good deed was repaid with an interesting show!

Best wishes for your uncle, Margo!

I was out of town for a work thing Thursday and Friday and was planning on leaving straight from the meeting Friday to go spend the weekend with my husband. They even let me bring my dogs with me to the lodge where the meetings were being held and we were staying so I could leave from there and save a couple hours off of my drive. Thursday night we were eating supper and the president of my company was a couple seats down from me. We were all talking and he was asking me about my trip for the weekend. He got all fatherly concerned for me driving so far on a holiday weekend and said they were going to get me out of the meeting as soon as possible the next morning. True to his word, when Friday morning meetings started he told the organizer to let my group's presentation be first so I could leave as soon as we were done. I may hate my job sometimes, but there is no doubt I work for a very caring group of people.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's so kind of him! Such small acts of kindness can make a lot of difference :)

Yes, he's my first nephew. I'm looking at his pictures 10 times away. We visited Sunday and go again next Sunday, which feels like forever! Unfortunately we live too far away to just peek in for 10 minutes after work.

Sarah | 18550 comments I've been having toothache for the last 2 weeks. Finally been to the dentist. My root canal filling from 13 years ago has failed so i have to have it redone. A one hour appointment. Not looking forward to that. My dentist will do it (£56) because i can't afford to see a root canal specialist (£550). Fingers crossed she can get the old one out ok and the tooth hasn't cracked otherwise i have a tough decision to make. Not going to think about that just yet though. Hopefully it will all go ok.

message 2057: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm sure it will be fine Sarah!

I've never had a root canal but I may not be too far away from having one. I have an infection underneath one of my teeth and sometimes it hurts a bit when something sharp touches my tooth (like a crisp that hit my tooth in a particular way) but at other times I don't feel it for months. The dentist says it needs a root canal but I don't have to have it as long as the infection doesn't bother me. I think it has to really start to hurt before I ask him for a root canal! It is one of those things that are surrounded by horror stories, even though I'm sure in most cases it is probably not as bad as you expect.

message 2058: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11298 comments The same thing happened to me a year ago, Sarah. A 10 years old root canal got infected for some reason. It seems it is quite common. The worst part was to wait 10 days between my dentist got the old one out and did the new one. I was on antibiotics and he wanted to be sure the infection was totally gone before sealing the tooth. The filling they use during that time in between do not completely isolate the root from the outside, plus the infection, I was really in pain. My case was kind of extreme, though. If you could tolerate the pain for 2 weeks I guess yours is not that bad. I remember thinking in the morning I had to floss again, because something was bothering me between my teeth. By night time I couldn't sleep because of the pain. The next morning I was almost crying in the phone when I called my dentist to ask to see him.

message 2059: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I had no choice but to wait 2 weeks Sandra - they couldn't fit me in sooner unfortunately. It's not keeping me awake so that's a good thing. It's only hurting when i put pressure on it or eat hot or cold food luckily. I now have to wait 3 weeks until they sort it. When i had it done originally i think it was infected so remember having to wait a week or so between appointments for the inflammation to go down. I don't have an infection this time so they will remove the current one and replace it with a new one in the same appointment.

Sarah | 18550 comments We have the general election in a week or so. Kind of excited about it as Labour are closing the gap on the Tories. I can't stand Teresa May. I want to vote Labour as I want Jeremy Corbyn to be prime minister. I would not hesitate to do so if we had proportional representation as a voting system. But we don't. I hate the whole constituency business. Where I'm registered to vote, looking at past elections, Tories have always got in with Lib Dems being not too far behind but Labour are always miles behind. So if i vote for Labour in my constituency it could possibly be a wasted vote and Tories get in there. So do i vote tactically and go for Lib Dems and hope they get in here instead of the Tories which could give Labour a lead for government or do I vote Labour as that is who I want to win? What if there is a massive swing towards labour but i vote lib dem and then my vote would be wasted that way. Anyway, I'm confused and don't know how to vote. This is a big election for the UK. A lot is riding on this.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Last time I went to dentist I had a cavity started. Turns out it's the tooth that has a root canal and a front and back filling. Had to get a crown

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Ewww... dentists. I have such a phobia!

message 2063: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments No vote is wasted. It's a myth. Have you seen the graphs particularly about the last elections in the UK and what would have happened if you had compulsory voting?

Vote for who you believe is best. Particularly this election, as I reckon it will be one that make a difference. I would not be surprised if there is an upset this one.

On that note, I know it is hard with non-compulsory voting, but all UK people make sure you are enrolled to vote, and do vote this election. I don't care if you vote against what I think. Brexit is a great example of what happens when people don't vote. For me who cannot vote in the election, please exercise your democratic right to have a say in your country. A lot of people fought pretty damn hard for you to do so, so it's only polite to vote.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Boo on dentists. I hope it all goes okay. Are you on antibiotics for your infection, Peggy? I'd be worried about one just brooding away in my jaw.

Hope your uncle is okay, Margo.

Bonnie is gorgeous, Anne. And I'm not a cat person!!

And that's lovely of your boss Kimey. Hope you had a good weekend!

message 2065: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I never thought of antibiotics. think I've had it for over 2 years. Maybe even 3. It's really just a minor annoyance every now and then, and I only was told what it was at last year's check-up when the dentist made pictures. Haven't felt it for a while now actually.

message 2066: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Jun 01, 2017 07:17AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11298 comments Peggy, so probably you don't have an infection. Believe me. The pain is insufferable when you are infected. And the annoyance I felt started less than 24 before I was dying of pain. It really escalated by the minute. So don't worry. None dentist would have kept you waiting if you had an infection.

Sarah, I hope everything goes well. If all the procedure can be done in a day, it will probably go really fast and easy.

message 2067: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's comforting Sandra :)

I was just thinking I wasn't sure anymore which exact word the dentist used and if perhaps infection was a too strong translation.

message 2068: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I think if you had an infection, the dentist would have at least given you antibiotics. They typically don't do any procedures if you have an active infection until it is cleared up.

I went to the dentist a couple of weeks ago to have 2 old fillings replaced that were "leaking." Not entirely sure what that means, but he was adamant that they be replaced and was surprised they hadn't been bothering me. Well, now they have been bothering me since I had that done. Argh.

message 2069: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks Rusalka. That's exactly what I needed. I had been leaning towards that decision myself. Definitely a country changing election this one. I don't want to get my hopes up and then be gutted by the result like with brexit. But it's hard not to get excited by the possibility of a prime minister who has morals and cares about people.

I used to have a fear of dentists and needles but all good now. I'll have all the anaesthetic they can give me. My problem is the length of the treatment. 1 hour sounds like hell to me. With all that drilling. Whilst i won't feel pain, i will feel vibration. I need to think about ways to speed the appointment up in my head and maintain calmness while it's going on. I think I'm going to devise a self hypnosis programme for myself to get practicing on. 3 weeks is a good amount of time to be practicing ready for the appointment i reckon.

I am not getting all of my GR notifucations! None all day for this thread.

Sarah, root canals have got a lot less painful over the years so it shouldn't be too bad. To make you feel even better about it think of my recent experience - I had to pay 700 euro to my dentist for mine! I don't think such things as root canal specialists exsist in ireland :-)

message 2071: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments Peggy the myths are just that, their is a little discomfort in a root canal and no more. They used to be a lot more painful in the bad old days - you have nothing to worry about.

Sarah PR is a lot fairer and out election counts are much more fun - they can last 3 days. I am always glued to the telly to see the outcome for those few precarious seats!

Yes, it is 3 attacks in 3 months. The Westminster attack was in March, Manchester was just under two weeks ago and now this. I know terror attacks are increasing all over the world, but the UK just seems to be being hit constantly. It's so scary.

Theresa May has just said "it's time to say enough is enough" and that the UK's counterterrorism strategy is going to be reviewed. It needs to be because it's clearly not working! I know it's difficult to monitor and keep tabs on everyone who might be a threat, but too many are slipping through the net.

It is very scary Lisa. On a personal level I have family and friends all around london. My cousin works in Westminster and my god daughter in picadilly. Not to mention the links between manchester and ireland. We are beside you in more ways than one.

message 2097: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think these things are unavoidable. You can't keep track of everyone, especially not people who have not been named in any investigations before. And even if people are known, it's so easy to jump in a car with a knife and drive into people in public places. Those acts require hardly any planning. The blocks of concrete at big events help of course, but what can you do about public roads at random times?

Margo | 11668 comments Lisa wrote: "Margo wrote: "Lisa wrote: "Just heard there has been another major incident in London, possibly a terror attack. A van reportedly mowed people down on London Bridge and there are reports of stabbin..."

But how can a free, multiultural society like London be protected without infrigeing on peoples rights? To bring back such measures as internment would surly spawn more terrorists? Can't see the the uk bringing in a Trump-like ban on travel and I think it would be counterproductive to do so.

message 2099: by Lisa (last edited Jun 04, 2017 04:13AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments No, the UK won't bring in a travel ban. I personally think the army should be deployed on the streets in order to free up the police so that they can work alongside the security services in trying to track people who might be a threat. The PM deployed them in the wake of the Manchester attack but stood them down a few days later. I think they should be deployed on a more permenant basis until things get more under control. The security services are reportedly monitoring over 500 potential threats at a time. If they had the police helping them while the army do the job of the police on the streets, it might help them nip more plots in the bud.
