The windows were all the way down. And I'm still on a boil water advisory, so I was really looking forward to spending the day with my friend and having a shower. My car wouldn't start - the door must not have closed all the way and the interior light was probably on all night. At least my friend's husband has a battery pack thingy so she'll bring it by tomorrow. Now we'll get together Friday. Thank goodness because I have our drinks already planned - Bananas Foster :)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sounds like you need to have an evening of crafts or something similar Kimey to take your mind off things, clear your head, and do something you enjoy. It might help you rest better when you sleep. I always find doing something like that or sports (when I did them) helpful at clearing my mind.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm in the process of researching how to care for axolotls, as I'm thinking of getting one as a pet. Does anyone here own one, or know anyone who owns one? If so, are they fairly easy to care for?

message 1808: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I love axolotls!

But I don't know anything about them. I researched it too, several years ago, but we never got one. Not sure whether that had to do with the care they need.

message 1811: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19324 comments I had to look them up to remember what they are! I found this article about general care: https://www.thespruce.com/axolotls-as...

I think they are so cute. I love the way they look like they're smiling. :)

Kristie | 19324 comments I am so exhausted today. I have an indoor/outdoor cat. She goes out during the day, but is always in at night. She likes to follow us when we walk the dogs. Yesterday, she followed us as usual, but didn't come in afterwards. We even cut the walk short to make sure she'd be home before it started to get dark. Our house abuts conservation land and she wandered into the woods when we got home. The last time I called her was 2:20 this morning. Then, I woke up I don't even know how many times because my brain knew she was still outside. She's lucky she didn't get picked up by some big bird of prey or other predator out there during the night. She strolled in about 5am this morning all proud of herself...worse than a teenager. I kind of want to kick her out in the rain today and go back to bed.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Thanks for the links, Sarah and Kristie. I had found some information but not those particular sites. I'm very keen on getting one so hopefully it will come to pass. I will of course post pictures if and when I get one. I'm not sure what colour to go for, I like the pinky-white ones with the red gills, but I also like the green ones too.

Kristie, sounds like you had a pretty restless and stressful night! There is nothing worse than worrying about a pet. Hopefully she will behave herself tonight and you can catch up on your sleep.

It's not been slow for me but I did have trouble logging on earlier. I kept getting the "over capacity" message.

message 1817: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Travis, I heard something on the radio yesterday about GRRM publishing a book. I only caught part of it, but they said it wasn't the next in the series, but somehow related. Maybe you had heard something similar the day you had your dreams? It just reminded me of your post when I heard it.

I had to look up Axolotls to make sure I was remembering the right thing and I was! You made me curious how hard they were to keep so I found this: http://www.reptilesmagazine.com/Care-... and it sounds like they aren't too difficult. Have you thought about names if/when you get one?

Thanks for the link, KimeyDiann. Yes, they do sound fairly easy to care for :) As far as names go, I don't have any particular ones in mind but seeing as they come from Mexico and South America, I will probably go for a Spanish name.

message 1819: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19324 comments Thanks, Lisa. It's raining today, so she's unlikely to try to stay out all night again.

Maybe the issue was just over capacity then. Who knows. Seems to be ok right now, at least it is on the app.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Hope tonight will be quieter Kristie! And no, not slow for me.

I forget to respond to your post KD. Sounds like a rough time, I hope things will be better soon!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments You're the first to my knowledge I've heard of a new book, but I find myself tiring of him releases non series books. If he takes much longer he's going to join the ranks of Patrick Rothfuss where I'm going to just tire of waiting and fail to care if the next book comes out.

message 1822: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I read about the new story today. It's just a short story from the series which appears in an anthology. Out this year. Not a full blown book unfortunately. Or the one we all want.

message 1823: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm also past caring for the kingkiller books. I'll probably read it at some point if it ever comes out, but I won't be all eager and excited waiting for the publication date.

message 1824: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm still looking forward to the next Kingkiller book, but it's taking so long to get published that I'm going to have to read the first two books again before it comes out because I can't remember what happened! I don't understand why it's taking so long because I seem to remember reading somewhere that he finished all 3 books before The Name of the Wind was published. Unless he is waiting for the rumoured tv series to come out before he publishes it? In that case, we could be in a very long wait as it's still in early development and doesn't have a cast or anything.

message 1825: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited May 11, 2017 10:34AM) (new)

Kristie | 19324 comments I don't think that's true, Lisa. Rothfuss wrote a really funny review on Doors of Stone stating that people were reviewing a book that wasn't finished yet. Of course, he wrote the review in 2012, but that was still after the first book was out. Hopefully, he's done soon! I've only read the first book in the series. I will definitely need to re-read if I plan to finish the series. Review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Ahh, okay. I must have read or remembered it wrong. Mind you, if he wrote that review back in 2012, you would still think he would have finished it by now, 5 years later. I hope we don't have to wait too much longer!

message 1827: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19324 comments I know! I understand giving him artistic time, but come on. Let's go already.

I think it's strange that there is a page count listed before the book is ready. Anyone know if that means anything? I mean, how can you know how many pages your book will be if it isn't done?

message 1828: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Rothfuss is a perfectionist. So it takes him a lot longer to get to the stage where he's happy with his work in order to send it for publishing. I'm still psyched for the next one.

message 1829: by Sarah (last edited May 12, 2017 04:35AM) (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Off to get my eyebrows shaped and hair cut this morning. It's the hen party for my cousin tomorrow. We're off to have afternoon tea on a boat on the River Thames. Home away from home! Then out for food and drinks in the evening. I'm looking forward to it. However, the motorway that takes me to my parents is closed between two junctions for the whole weekend which is pants. It's looking like I might have to pay the extortionate train fares to get there isn't. I could fly to Europe for the same price! That's why we need Corbyn as he is planning to nationalise the trains again which would be much better.

message 1830: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11668 comments Train fares in UK are extortionate! So much for privatization! It surely doesn't encourage people to leave the car at home. Trains in Ireland are much cheaper, at least off peak, but unfortunately for me the disabled facilities on trains are pants so I usually have to get lifts.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Two times the word 'pants'. First I thought it was a typo but with no idea what it was supposed to be. Now I'm going to look up what it means. Although the context gives me a clue.

Enjoy your weekend Sarah! I made an appointment with a hairdresser today for May 23, to make something decent out of what will be left from my hair.

I just got an email that I can start language coaching again. I had to stop for a while because work was too busy, and from the end of February I had time again but it took some time to find a right match. I'm now paired up with a woman from Eritrea, 1 year younger than me. I'm excited!

message 1833: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Trains here in Aus cost more than a plane ride. So I'm always excited in the UK. I get my first taste of German and Swiss trains in August though. Preparing to have my mind blown.

message 1834: by Peggy (last edited May 12, 2017 05:17AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments German trains are not so expensive. Or comparable to Dutch maybe. The Swiss are very expensive.

I always find the Dutch quite expensive too, but they're cheaper than UK I think.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Stop hitting post Rus! I hope the hens do is great, Sarah. And your head is dealable in the morning :P

Great that you are able to start language conversation skills again Peggy. I saw something about that here the other day, and thought of you, and that I should investigate further.

message 1837: by Laura (Lclwags) (new)

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments I wish I had more to contribute to the train discussion, but sadly, the only trains in my small town are the annoyingly slow ones that often interrupt my morning commute. I shouldn't complain though. They bring us our resin we need to mold the car seats and components.

Rusalka, thanks for clarifying pants. :) I thought I read that wrong at first.

Sarah, what's a hen party? Is it like a bachelorette party?

Peggy, that's exciting! I have a childhood friend who was doing language coaching. She's about to have her first child, so I think she's decided to stop for awhile.

Rothfuss - I just read the first 2 books last year after a friend recommended them. I didn't realize when I started reading that the 3rd book hasn't been released yet! Although, there was so much detail to the story, I probably should read the books again. I'm sure I missed things or didn't fully understand some things.

message 1838: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Laura wrote: "Sarah, what's a hen party? Is it like a bachelorette party?"

Exactly. Here in Aus we call them Hens (bachelorette) or Bucks (bachelor) nights. I think the UK is pretty similar.

message 1839: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Rusalka wrote: "But don't you guys have a bad track record of public ownership of services? I remember reading British Telecom was one of the worst companies for customer service."

Pretty sure BT is a private company now. Well, I'm pretty sure it is anyway. They are awful. Although I've had issues with most phone/internet providers over the years. Everything here has been privatised. Trains. Buses. Post services. And the prices all went up and you don't get a better service.

As Rusalka says. We call it Stag rather than Buck.

message 1842: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments That's exciting Peggy about getting back to it on the language front. Sounds like a great thing to do.

Hair and eyebrows now under control :-) I also found a couple bargains in the charity shop which I might wear on the hen do. One dress which has the words of the sound effects that you get in comic books like Batman (Kapow, and Zap etc) all over it in black and white. I love it. So I'm all ready to go.

Thanks Rusalka for clarifying the meaning of pants for people. Seems I've highlighted a few words today that are not widely used or at least show the differences between English speaking countries. You learn a lot in YLTO ;-)

Pants lol It's a very british comment (and apparently Aus)! I haven't heard it since I lived in the UK. It's a more polite than knickers ;-p

message 1847: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I was going to ask about "pants" too. It sound like a PG version of cussing, but the first time I saw it I thought it was a typo too. I may have to use it!

On that subject, living in the Bible-Belt (Southern USA), most people keep their cussing to a minimum, depending on who they are around. Not everyone of course, but it is considered poor manners to cuss in public, especially if ladies or children are around (ha! I know some "ladies" that cuss worse than rum soaked sailors!). Anyway, because of this culture, some people come up with interesting alternative cuss words. I heard a good one the other day. A vendor was in our office and looking something up on his computer when he suddenly exclaimed "Mother-in-law!" We were confused until he explained that, no, he wasn't mad at his M-I-L, that is just what he says when something messes up.
