Sarah | 18550 comments I agree. In 10 years time we will look back at what we have now with nostalgia. I have to say I'm not really looking forward to some of the advancements which are sure to come. I think people are too technologically dependent now and companies will continue to exploit this. In no time we'll all have a chip inserted in our brain that we can access the internet with etc. lol. Well, it wouldn't surprise me anyway if it did happen.

I'm the same, Sarah. I'm starting to think the Terminator films might have been a closer representation of the future than we initially thought...

I saw a headline recently about a Swedish company that was offering microchip implants for their employees. I think the chips would be used to open locked rooms and that sort of thing. It may have done more, but I didn't read the full article.

I saw this article a well. I had a "big Brother" feeling about it. I think a few people should reread 1984.

message 1557: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I read the article, I didn't mind it. They had a decent ethics code with it.

I saw a guy a few years back at a game con who had a magnet in his finger tip. He could sense magnetic forces with it, which was kinda cool. Took a while for his brain to adjust but now is another sense.

message 1558: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments What if that guy has to have an MRI? We he go in to meltdown? lol. I wonder what made him think that would be useful. I like the idea that he has a special power though that no one else has though. Just not sure how useful it would be.

message 1559: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Well, an MRI would rip the magnet out of the flesh of his finger and would severely damage the machine. So, he wouldn't be having one, but I think we could call that a meltdown :P

Lexx and I can't remember what his reason was for getting it originally. But he can do things like feel if a hard drive is working, and feel going through a airport scanner. It started as just an sensation in his finger, but now he feels it with his whole body.

message 1560: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I can't decide if the magnet thing is really cool or really weird. LOL. I really hope he never has to have an MRI. He needs a medical alert bracelet incase he was ever in an accident and the hospital wanted to do an MRI while he was unconscious, that would be really bad!

message 1561: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Apr 14, 2017 09:37AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I have a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth. The amount of times I tell Lexx he has to remember this to tell people if I am unconscious and people want to do a MRI. I do not want my lower jaw stuck to the inside of a MRI machine.

message 1562: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments You mean the small wire thingy at the back of your teeth that nobody sees?

I don't think that's an issue. Or at least my uni does a lot of fmri research and you can participate in that if you have such a wiry thingy. Don't think it will be different for an mri in hospital. But better be safe than sorry!

message 1563: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I have one of those too... I've never thought about it being an issue. I'm wishing I had a magnet nearby to see if it was actually magnetic. I'm going to google about this! LOL.

@Rus, do you hate your perm. retainer? It drives me crazy that I can't floss around it. I've tried the "threader" type floss, but my teeth are too tight for it to go between them below the retainer.

message 1564: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Here is what I found regarding permanent retainers and MRI machines:

•Dental fillings (while usually unaffected by the magnetic field, these may distort images of the facial area or brain; the same is true for orthodontic braces and retainers)

message 1565: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I also have permenant retainers on both my top and bottom teeth. Most of the time I forget I even have them, but they can be a bit annoying if a little piece of food gets stuck behind them as it can be quite hard to get it back out again.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm just back from having a bit of a hair makeover. I had my long hair chopped into a bob and dyed a hazelnut brown with red/bronze undertones. I haven't had my hair this short in over 10 years but I really love it. I kind of wish I had done it sooner!

message 1567: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds like it looks great on you Lisa!

message 1568: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sounds fab Lisa. It's nice to have a change. I'm getting mine trimmed in a few weeks on the salon boat in prep for the wedding I'm a bridesmaid at. I keep thinking about changing my hair colour but then never do anything about it. When i was younger i had a new colour pretty much every 2 weeks. Then i had a few fiascos and i haven't dyed it since.

Kristie | 19324 comments Nice, Lisa! I'm due for a hair makeover, but I don't know what I want to do. I'm considering getting it cut short and letting it go white, sort of Jamie Lee Curtis style. I'm just not sure if I'll hate it if I do. It's taken me forever to grow it out.

Sarah, that sounds like my younger daughter. She is 22 and for a few years now, we never know what color to expect her hair to be.

I think that style would suit you, Kristie. I know what you mean though, about how long it will take to grow out if you didn't like it. I think sometimes we just have to be brave and take the risk.

My hair was in such a bad way before I had it cut today. It was dry and brittle due to illness and repeat home colourings (including bleached blonde) and it didn't have any real style either. It was just long and dull and wasn't really doing anything except keeping my head warm. I hated it so much I actually seriously considered shaving it all off and starting again from scratch. I can't believe the difference this cut and colour has made! I was a bit worried about going short but I have no regrets at all. I might go even shorter next time.

message 1571: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19324 comments Glad you are loving it, Lisa. It sounds refreshing. I bet it is really nice. Sometimes that change is just what we need.

message 1572: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes growing hair out can be frustrating. I had an undercut done about a year ago. I trimmed it last back in November and I was growing it because of winter and it being cold but it looks bad growing out. So I shaved it short again the other day. I don't know what I'll do when I get fed up of it. It will take ages to grow back to any length.

I was wondering about your undercut just the other day, Sarah. I was meaning to ask you whether you had kept it or had grown it out. I can imagine it would take a long time to grow that out. How long had it got before you shaved it again?

message 1574: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It was probably an inch maybe an inch and a half.

message 1575: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19324 comments Sarah, my daughter also had an undercut. When it got to the point where it was getting long, but didn't fit in with a longer hairstyle, she got a short pixie cut and grew it all out together. She had so many different cute styles while growing that out. She's much more creative with her style than I am.

message 1576: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Interesting info on the permanent retainers all. They are pretty uncommon here in Aus, so there isn't much info. I always err on the side of caution, but good to know I may be overthinking it. I don't mind it, but I do find plaque builds up a lot behind it due to the not being able to floss. I use Piksters now which go between the base of my teeth (I have tight teeth too, so use the smallest width) which make so much difference.

Your hair sounds awesome, Lisa. Sometimes just going "it's hair, it will grow back" is the best thing!

message 1577: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Good idea on the hair growing out styles Kristie. I will keep it in mind.

message 1578: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Sarah, I've always imagined you with long hair due to your profile picture. I'm sure the way I have most of you here pictured in my mind is totally wrong. Sort of like when you finally see a picture of the radio dj you listen to regularly and they look nothing like you imagined. lol.

@Lisa, your new 'do sounds beautiful. Glad to hear you are loving it. It is amazing what something as simple as a new hairstyle can do for how we feel about ourselves sometime.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments The husband and I had a date night Saturday night. Just dinner and a movie, but it was quite nice. An unplanned event happened during the night too though. When we left the restaurant headed to the theater, we drove past the tattoo parlor my husband uses. He had contacted the artist he uses a couple of months ago and he said he wasn't working right now, but the husband noticed that he was there when we drove past. He text him and he said for us to stop by after the movie. So, this happened:

message 1586: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Thanks, all!

It is my first. I've wanted the quote for a long time, but I also wanted something colorful. I had went back and forth a lot on the watercolor as I know they are becoming really popular and I tend to stay away from trendy things... but the style just fits me so well.

It did hurt, but it was never unbearable. Certain spots hurt much worse than others and I was more than ready for it to be over with by the time he finished. Not sure I could have handled much more! LOL.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments KimeyD - I love your tattoo! It's gorgeous and what a great quote. How long did it take?

message 1589: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Well, I've gone a full week without tv. I had it cut off last Monday - it wasn't worth the cost (about $150/month). I might get something else, but not yet. It's funny, I would go long periods avoiding the news, and now it's the only thing I really miss. Probably for the best because Trump keeps freaking me out :) And my jackass of a governor. I check news online sometimes, and listen to baseball on the radio. I figure my library gets videos of some of the shows I loved - I'm going to have to pester them to get caught up on Doctor Who and a few others.

I might be applying for a job with one of my library systems. I have no experience in working in that environment, but I've spent a lot of time in libraries over the years ☺ Mainly I have to figure out if I'm mentally ready to commit to a full time job. I had a lot of FMLA time off in the last year of my previous job and I'm afraid of that happening again. Also need to know I can be focused enough. I stopped at McDonalds this morning and asked if shouldn't be getting a dollar back besides the change in my right hand. Then realized the dollar was in my left hand sitting on top of the receipt. Then I was at the library trying to figure out where the copies I printed out were and I was at the wrong printer (and they only have two). Then I stopped at the grocery store and couldn't figure out why the credit card swiper wouldn't accept my card - I hadn't pressed the payment button. I decided it was better for everyone if I went home after that - I'd probably confuse the gas and brake pedals or something just as dangerous to others :) Sigh - that's common when I'm having a slightly manic day - the attention span of a gnat, can't finish one thing smoothly because my mind left it behind about a thousand thoughts ago. And still many days where I'm awake all night and sleeping all day. I might have to look into Social Security Disability benefits instead of a job. I have to admit, I haven't been this relaxed and happy in along time without the stress of trying to fit into a schedule that wasn't my own. Of course the downside of my contentment is that I don't leave the house a lot. My friend Teresa makes me meet her sometimes to get me out. Or I call her and tell her I need a shower so we have to meet (sad but true).

I read some of the posts about working out. I'm trying to walk Jingo more, but have no willpower to exercise. I have lost 10 lbs since losing my job, but that has mainly been from sleeping 24 to 30+ hours at a time. It's amazing what not eating because you're asleep can accomplish. It's nice because I've been able to wear clothes that I hadn't been able to for the last five years, but I know it's not healthy. Luckily it's only happened once in the last month, and that was because I had been worried about a few things and I finally shut down.

Wow, I think I just wrote a novella, or at least a short story :) I think I'll go fix dinner. I have a rosemary plant and I need to use some before I kill it.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11297 comments Glad to know you are feeling better, j'mom. If you feel like a full time job would be too much, maybe you can try to commit to another activity that could help you to go out of your home and see people but at the same time it doesn't pressure you that much.

message 1593: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'm glad to hear that you're feeling happy and content, j'mom. I agree with Sandra's comments. Having to set that alarm clock every morning can be too regimented perhaps.

Sarah | 18550 comments Great to hear you are feeling better J'mom. I second the thoughts above. Go easy on yourself and don't rush things. Oh, and those missing change, printing, button pressing things happen to me all the time. I wouldn't say it's necessarily a sign of no focus but i can imagine how you feel when they all happen the same day in quick succession.

I forgot - I even filed my taxes yesterday. I can really use that refund. I'm never on time, I'm not even sure if I filed last year's or not. Yeah - I've had numbers related jobs most of my life, and you know what they say about being horrible personally at the thing you do for a living :)

Your shower comment made me laugh, as we just had a 4 day weekend here in Aus for Easter. I got asked by someone today what I achieved, and I replied "Well, I got dressed once". She didn't quite know where to go with that lol

I like the tattoo Kimey! Watercolours are trendy over here too. My old housemate last year got one of the The Paperbag Princess in watercolour on her arm.

Thanks! I really don't remember how long it took. I was such a ball of nerves about it at the time it seemed like it took forever, but afterwards it felt like it took no time at all. I think probably an hour or maybe a little longer.

message 1600: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I don't have tv right now either, jmom. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime for when I do want to watch something, which isn't all that often. I get my news online so I'm covered there. I have noticed lately that I've sort of wanted the tv on just for the background noise, but other than that I really haven't missed it these last few months.

Have you considered a part time job just to see if you are ready to get back into that particular saddle? Since you are feeling a lot better now, maybe baby steps are what you need to consider so you don't get overwhelmed.

How did you cook the brussels sprouts? I've saved a recipe on pinterest recently that I'm tempted to try, but I just haven't done it yet. I'm not sure if I like sprouts or not so I hate to buy and cook them just to throw them away if I don't.
