Most of the schools in my area closed today because of the chance of snow up to 1". We aren't equipped for it around here either and people always panic. One co-worker missed today because of slick roads where he lives, but the rest of the office made it in. We all live so spread out it is interesting how we all are effected differently.

Arrrr, don't say that Kimey! I plan to start tomorrow! It is actually written down in my planner!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments BTW, tomorrow's high is expected to be 18F, -7C.

Sarah | 18550 comments You guys are mental to go running when it's below 0C!

I'm planning on swimming as my exercise. I am actually going to have some adult swimming lessons. I can do breast stroke but badly and can't put my head under water. It means i end up with a sore neck and shoulders pretty quickly and i have no strength. So if i get some lessons, with a wider variety of strokes, more skill and strength i hope to be better at it and get more from it.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments We got maybe 2-3ft of snow yesterday. I don't know. In the morning it was nasty. My wife tried to go to work. Made it 100 yards down road and I had to go pull her out of a drift probably 40" deep in road. It was even with the top of the hood of her explorer. Then took a long time to find our way back. Took at least 5 minutes sitting n road for me to finally see her hazards flashing to even help her. Was a whiteout. Not sure why she tried to go to work in the first place.

message 106: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol, I always think people are mental to go running, period ;-)

Some sports I can imagine are fun (swimming among them) but I really cannot see the fun in running. I hate running. I know it's me, it's so popular, and I am jealous of people who get themselves to exercise (yes, also run) regularly.

message 107: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I bought a new pillow today and it seems very comfy so I'm looking forward to going to bed.

Also, now that I'm discovering the world of beer and don't find them all disgusting anymore, I downloaded the Untapped app. Anyone else using it?

message 108: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1796 comments Wow, clotheslines to snow to exercise. The topics are so diverse in here!

I am personally a die hard clothesline person, there are actually clothes on the line today as it's clear and cold. Anytime that's it's not raining is clothesline weather, because I don't own a dryer.

We're supposed to get snow here for the next week, hopefully it sticks to flurries and not freezing rain, I really hate driving in this weather and I have crap tires right now so it's even worse.

And I agree, running outside at that temp is crazy, I personally went for a gym membership so I could be indoors when it's this cold but I can't wait to get back outside on the bike.

Janice is probably laughing at us all, the highs are -10 (14F) today where she is and on Wednesday the high is supposed to be -26 (-15F). Begging the question, why would anyone want to live there?? :)

message 109: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Never heard of the app before Peggy. I just had a look at it and can see you get badges for trying new beers. That could be dangerous! Especially for us badge addicted lot here at ylto!

I'm not a fan of running either. There are so many runners up and down the towpath and it's free exercise too. I wish i liked it but i don't. And exercise should be fun, not a chore.

message 110: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's what I thought too Sarah. It's actually a very bad thing if you want to discourage people from drinking too much or encourage them to drink less.

message 111: by KimeyDiann (last edited Jan 06, 2017 02:26PM) (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Sandra, don't let me discourage you. I just really really really hate cold weather. I'm just not cut out for it.
What kind of planner do you have? I've been looking at some of the motivational yearly planners this week, but I haven't ordered one yet. Yes, we are practically a week into the new year and I'm just now thinking about getting a yearly planner! LOL.

I'm with those of you on thinking it is mental to go running when it is this cold! My friend text me a screen shot of her weather app earlier with the hourly forcasts for tomorrow. It might get to 30f with 15-20 mph winds. I told her I'm out tomorrow, I can't take it!

Actually I agree with you on thinking running sucks in general. I don't enjoy it, but I know I feel better on the whole once I get back into it. Which, I don't technically run, I jog, but its the same difference in my mind.

I'm going to try to start a 30 day boot camp I found online too. It is a daily email with a link to a 10 minute or so workout. It is a whole body thing focused on beginners and I can do it in the comfort of my own home. Hopefully it'll balance my intermittent running schedule!

I tried, but I always forget until afterwards and then forget what things are called or exactly why I liked it. My brother uses it religiously though.

Totally with you. I hate running. But as I managed to get even fatter over the holidays, I think I am going to have finally suck it up and start until I can find something better/more enjoyable to do.

message 114: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments To be honest, I do not love to run. This will be my 4th or 5th attempt in the last 2 years. It happens that right now is something I can manage to do. Running half an hour twice a week (three, if possible) has an impact in your health, it takes a short time, I can still doing it when my husband is out of town and I am by myself with the kids. I canceled yesterday our YMCA membership until summer. It wasn't' working. I manage to go only once in December.

message 115: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Runnings not bad. Sometimes I run out of beer and then I run to the store quick to get more.

message 116: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Running is not for me and I've heard from people in the medical field that it is really hard on your joints. Good thing I don't like to run, haha! I walk..A LOT! Some friends of mine I just started doing challenges to get each other to get a certain amount of steps in per day. I've been able to get at least 10,000 steps in per day since Monday :) and am currently in 2nd place in my group for the week. It's quite fun!

LOL! We must have had about 4" of the white stuff the other day. I'm sick of cleaning off the car every time I need to go anywhere. It is cold right now, but by next weekend it's supposed to warm up to -4C.

We must be mental to live here. But it's worse further north.

message 119: by Joan (new)

Joan Yeah but TRAVIS has to shovel all that snow to get to his truck to run to the store

message 120: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I guess being out of beer is a great incentive to shovel.

message 121: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments Conclusion: runing out of beer is the best exercise.

message 122: by Peggy (last edited Jan 07, 2017 01:13AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Travis!

We had our cm of snow. It's worse in the west than it is here, but it's all over the news that you shouldn't go out unless you really have to. Over 200 accidents happened during the night on just the highways, while normally there would be none or maybe one every once in a while.

message 123: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments It's humorous to us who live in a snow zone to see the panic by a dusting but places that don't get snow have no experience driving on slick surfaces, have the wrong tires on their vehicles and lack the road crews to keep the road safe. It's like if a hurricane was to slam into us people in Florida would be shaking their heads at the response as I'm sure we'd look like fools not knowing what to do and not properly preparing

message 124: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Jan 07, 2017 05:33AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments It is true. I remember being terrified of driving here on snowy days when we moved to the US. I am still VERY careful, but I have learned some things, and also I know better what I and my car can do, so I know when it is safe for me to go outside.

I also fell at least once each winter the firsts winters. Even using appropriate boots. It was just that you don't know how to move, where to step. The worst was carrying the trash can to the curb... I fell and keep sliding down still holding the trash can for a few meters. (Our car drive is in a slope). It was actually funny. But my elbow hurt for months after. I can proudly say now I haven't fall in the last 3 winters. :D
What do you expect?? Uruguay is a big flat, boring, snowless, meadow...

message 125: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm sorry, but that made me laugh Sandra! I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself too much though :)

It's like both of you say, it doesn't happen here often enough for us to have enough practice or to make it worthwile to be super prepared. I also think I'm too scared to fall when I'm out, which makes me even more careful and slow when I walk or cycle, but in the end I think that's even more dangerous. My boyfriend has no problems at all going out in this weather.

I hope it's all gone when I have to cycle to the station again on Monday. It's supposed to be +6 again tomorrow, so everything should have melted before then.

message 126: by Lisa (last edited Jan 07, 2017 05:25AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments It's the same here in the UK, particularly in the southern half where we hardly ever see snow. The smallest amount causes chaos because people aren't used to driving, walking etc, in it. Plus, they only tend to grit the motorways and main roads and that is a problem when you live in a hilly area.

message 127: by Tasha (new)

Tasha These have been great posts to read. I've laughed a lot. :)

We are expecting snow today, we got a few inches the other day. The first this season.

message 128: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments We had only an inch yesterday, but it is cold again. After some unusual warm days, we are back around 15F, -9C.

message 129: by Joan (new)

Joan Driving in the snow is a balance, especially going up or down hills, go too slow or too fast and you're sure to lose control.
When I first started riding horses in the snow I was terrified that they would slip and slide and crash...turns out they are sure-footed (who knew).

message 130: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4068 comments Wow, those clotheslines are so different from ours! Ours is usually just a rope tied to two posts.

The weather there, wow! We seem to be grappling with the global warming. The winter here is a measly 7C here now. I love winters atleast until 2 degree celsius, lol.

Running in whatever weather is a complete no-no for me. I can walk, but run? Nope.

Sandra's mentioning about falling down reminded me of this really cute polar bear mascot video that had me laughing so hard. https://www.facebook.com/uniladmag/vi...

message 131: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I tried the Couchto5K a couple of years ago and finished it. I ran my first and only 5K shortly after. I stopped running bc it got too cold and then once I tried running again I hurt my knee. I decided running is not for me. I would rather do yoga, walk and some weights. The trick is actually doing it. ;)

Keep some get-well cards on your mantlepiece so visitors think you have been too sick to clean the house.

Kristie | 19323 comments We are getting snow here in Virginia. Funny thing is that we left Massachusetts a little over a year ago and moved to Virginia because we were tired of so much snow and we are getting more down here this time than they are up there. We are expecting 4-8" today. At our last home in Virginia (closer to the coast) they are expecting about 12" and where my daughter is up in New Hampshire, they are only expecting 2-4" tomorrow. It is exactly the opposite of a typical storm.

I tried a couch to 5K program once and felt like I was going to die. That's when I realized how out of shape I was - worse than a couch potato. lol I have walk-jogged a couple of 5Ks since and keep thinking about trying again, but think it's probably just not for me, especially since my ankle injury a year and a half ago. I also think other activities are better, but just need to get myself to do do them.

message 142: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments That's great your taking swimming lessons, Sarah. I did that as an adult, too, and found it quite helpful. For a couple of years, I swam several times a week and really enjoyed it, but got out of it eventually for various reasons. I've recently been thinking about trying to get this going again.

I have upped my activity level though in the past year. I've been doing a weekly water aerobics class since last spring. Sometimes wish I went twice a week, but usually don't. Glad I make it once a week regularly. My primary exercise is walking, which I love and do almost daily, and I do a little yoga. Nothing rigorous but poses and exercises that I enjoy and find helpful.

Good luck to everyone with their exercise goals. Have fun and be well!

message 143: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I made oatmeal bars and oatmeal cookies today, and all failed :/ I don't know what's going on. Lately whenever I bake something it turns black and burned within half of the time indicated by the recipe. I never had that before. Making other oven dishes like lasagne never is a problem.

Ugh, and now I'm bummed out because it's the last day of my holiday and I wasted it on this..

message 144: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Peggy, go over in the recipe thread. I posted an oatmeal bar over there that is a no-bake version. It's really good. ;)

message 145: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Haha, I shouldn't be able to mess that up ;-) Thanks Tasha!

message 146: by Joan (new)

Joan Peggy,
How frustrating! It sounds like your oven is running too hot at the cookie setting. The lasagna would be more forgiving because it contains more water (water is a great heat buffer), cooks at a lower temp and is larger.
If you can, get an oven thermometer and check the actual oven temp at several settings. If you can't get a thermometer try cooking cookies at a lower temp.

Until then I hope you can enjoy the cookie dough raw.

message 147: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Joan! I was already wondering if baked stuff is more sensitive to high temps. Maybe the oven is slowly breaking down. I made this before and always worked out. I'll try it lower next time :)

message 148: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11296 comments I was going to suggest the same as Joan. I have problems baking cookies, so I rarely do, but I bake cake every week. I never set the oven at the temperature the recipe suggest, or it always turns burned in the outside and still wet in the inside. I usually set the oven at around 2/3 or the suggested temp. I also pay little attention to the time suggested. I look at it, and when I think it is getting ready, I prick it to see how it goes in the inside.
I am from the caves era... I know...
