Sandra (sanlema) | 11297 comments Sorry to hear about the rejection, Peggy... I am sure the right job will come soon. Do not get discouraged. This is part of the get/change job business.

Yesterday was our first day of actual "springish" weather, and I am so thankful for that. I was getting green sick of cold and snow.

message 1352: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm jealous of your warmer weather Peggy. It has been really nice here recently with lots of sun but the wind is still a bit chilly. Were averaging about 15C. On Saturday my partner suggested we sit out on the front of the boat for an afternoon beer in the sun as a break from all the diy. About 5 minutes in we were shivering and had to sit in the cratch (boat porch) with one side of it closed to keep the wind out. That was much better so we persevered but we ended up going inside again before the end of our beer. I think he was being a bit optimistic. But it was still our first outside beer on the boat of the year and made me look forward to warmer weather.

message 1353: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I know that feeling Sarah! I always go sit outside when it seems slightly warm, but usually I'm back inside in 15 minutes because it looks so much warmer than it actually is. Always a bit disappointing.

message 1354: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Especially as the temperature in the boat got up to 28C and the sun is shining outside - very deceiving!

message 1355: by Peggy (last edited Mar 28, 2017 05:04AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Wow, it's already 28C in the boat? How warm does it get in the middle of summer?

message 1356: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Glad to hear! We turn off daylight savings this weekend, it will be very sad.

message 1357: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes. Crazy temperature I know. A steel box which is insulated with loads of windows allows the sun in, the temperature to build and it stays that way. All depends on the boat placing in relation to the sun plus amount of tree cover. In the summer it can be pretty uncomfortable. Last year it got up to about 36C in the boat during the day. When we're home we can have all the doors and side hatches open which will bring the temperature down loads plus the usual windows which stay open all the time. Laying on the floor is good as the temperature tends to be about 5C less down there.

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get an interview, Peggy. That rejection is tough especially when you're excited about the prospects.

Things are getting warmer here. The temps are in the single digits yet, but at least they are above freezing. Snow is melting like crazy.

message 1359: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I just got the funniest phone call on my company phone:

Caller: Oh, ah. Hi,... Could I speak to the president or owner of the company?

Me: You're speaking to her.

Caller: Oh, my name is Jeremy. What's yours?

Me: Janice

Caller: Hi Janice. I'm Jeremy. I'm looking for a loan for $50,000. Can you help me out?

Me: *laughing* Not at all.

I hung up even though he was still talking.

message 1360: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Wow that is bizarre Janice.

Peggy - Sorry you didn't get an interview. I'm sure something even better will come along.

message 1363: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5203 comments Peggy, i m sorry. Sometimes you get to know why but it is rarely the case. I am sure you will find something.

Spring? what do you mean spring? we had 5cm of the white stuff yesterday and it snow again today.... argh.

message 1364: by Peggy (last edited Mar 29, 2017 02:54AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Weird guy Janice. I guess you can always try...

Yikes Esther.. I hope spring starts soon for you too :)

Is anyone familiar with coloring for adults? It's been very popular here for the last 3 years or so. Basically coloring like you did as a child, except the drawings are much more detailed and complicated. Anyways, my mom has been doing it for a few months and I've seen it before and was always curious about it, and now she gave me two books and pencils for my birthday. I did it a few times now and it's actually really relaxing! One drawing takes several hours and time flies by when you're doing it. I'll post a picture in the creative things thread when I finish a few. I always wished I was good at drawing but I'm really really bad at it, and this is a good alternative ;-)

message 1365: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11297 comments My daughter love to color those books, Peggy. Even the youngest one is only 9. They have a few books, with mandalas, and Scandinavian drawings. I never tried, though.

message 1366: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I got a canal boat one Peggy. I started one but never got around to completing it. I did enjoy it though. My dad does them all the time and loves it. His are pretty good too.

message 1367: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments What a strange conversation, Janice!

Colouring in books are really popular here too. At one stage a year ago our top 10 selling books here were all colouring in books.

Sarah | 18550 comments Article 50 was inacted today so we will be leaving the EU by March 2019 :-( I was kind of hoping they were going to change their minds.

message 1369: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Me too. I was just watching it all on twitter. Urgh. Need to work out my little red passport while I can!

My co-worker, who was my boss until Nov, just quit work last week. She is moving to London, as she has 2 years until she can't live and work in the UK on her Italian passport. She saw it as her last chance, so quit her job, is renting her house, and doing it before kids. She mentioned it to me before she wrote the letter (they had already decided), and I was like "DO IT!!!"

message 1370: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's sad Sarah :( I was hoping it would all change around too.

You were all right yesterday about what you said about job hunting and how one rejection doesn't mean a thing. I just got an email saying I've been invited to an interview (other job, not the one from yesterday)! Yikes! I need to go prepare!

message 1371: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes a friend of mine who is German and been living here in the uk for ages has had to fill out residency papers recently. I don't fully understand what is happening with it all. Lots of uncertainty. I have to say i'm pleased i don't have to do any of that.

That's great news Peggy. Fingers crossed for you.

message 1372: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments Congrats, Peggy! That is fabulous. :)

Sarah, sorry you'll have to leave. What exactly is the article. Does it mean you can't work there on a visa?

Coloring books are getting quite popular here as well. They are used by some therapists to help with mental health. Many people find them relaxing. I used to use mandalas with the kids I did therapy with. Some of them really enjoyed it. I have couple at home, but never seem to pull them out. I enjoy coloring. I should do it more often.

message 1373: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Article 50 is just some form that had to be submitted to officially start the process of leaving the EU. We had the referendum and loads of talk since but nothing was set in motion. Now this is it. We're committed to leaving now and have 2 years to be gone. I have no idea what it means for working here. I'm guessing visa.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Kristie wrote: "Sarah, sorry you'll have to leave. What exactly is the article. Does it mean you can't work there on a visa?"

Kristie, she means the UK, not her herself ;)

message 1375: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments It's the written notification to the European Council that a country wants to leave the European Union. They, the leader of the country, writes to say they are leaving by X date. If they don't nominate a date, it is two years after the notification of leaving. So, in this case, March 2019.

Now there will be a lot of scrambling around trying to work out the details once the UK leaves. And they couldn't start this until they said they were going to leave. Also, now they have notified, there is no going back. If they decide to rejoin, they will have to reapply, just like other countries who never joined.

Hence, Scotland trying to have another independence referendum, as they don't want to leave or have to reapply to join the EU.

Whoops. I'm not going anywhere. As Rusalka said, the UK will be leaving the EU.

Rusalka's description of Article 50 explains things much better than mine.

Sorry, years of working in a European studies research centre comes out now and then :P

Kristie | 19323 comments Oh!!! Yup. I read that wrong. lol Thanks for explaining, Rusalka. I have heard about that going on over there, just didn't put it together. To be honest, I'm a bit distracted by all the craziness going on here, in the US, right now...

message 1383: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Awesome news about being invited for an interview, Peggy. Good luck.

On a similar note, I've become an employer! She starts today and is going to help me organize my office - filing, shredding, sorting - all those fun things I don't have time for. She'll start doing some inputting once she's up to snuff on the software I use. I don't know why I'm so nervous. LOL!

message 1384: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Haha, good to hear the other side feels nervous too ;-) Did you have job interviews and everything or is it someone you know?

message 1385: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I've been wavering for a while about what I wanted to do. I knew I either needed to hire someone or let clients go. A few weekends ago I went to a quilt retreat and Wendy was across the table from me and we chatted back and forth. I had met her a year previously at a retreat but didn't get to know her.

The next week, I went for lunch with a friend and she suggested we join up with a couple of ladies from the retreat. Wendy was one of them. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed that day and mentioned my on-going indecision about hiring or firing. The next day, Wendy phoned me. She was looking for casual employment and wondered if I had things like filing, sorting, etc. I told her that I wasn't sure of how the logistics would work, and to let me think about it.

Over the next week, I'd look at that growing pile of paperwork that needs to be organized. I looked at the tub of shredding that's crowding my office. I started a list of things she could do. I realized that the filing, shredding, etc were all things that could be billed to my clients so it wouldn't be money out of my pocket.

So I phoned her up, met her for lunch on Monday and we had a discussion about what we were both looking for. We agreed on a wage, and she starts today.

Sarah | 18550 comments That's great that you will have some support Janice with those tasks. I bet you will really notice the difference.

message 1390: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Usually the guy I hire occasionally does field work or barn chores and milking if I go away. About a month ago he was going to help me do night chores. I've never milked with him once in three years. He showed up with a 12 pack of beer and said since it was just us I figured we could knock out a twelver during milking. Says he doesn't bring beer when he works with my dad. I'm still trying to decide if I'm a good employer or bad employer for not just allowing but participating in beer drinking during work.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Rusalka, did you notice anything of the cyclone that hit Australia?

message 1396: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Nah, too far north for us. Sometimes south is best. Some huge destruction in some of the biggest holiday destinations in the country! Cyclones sound scary.

The system is no longer a cyclone but is still heading south. Some of the areas hit by the cyclone have had over a 1m of rain in the past 24 hours. Brissy got hit with 400mm of rain today and have closed all the schools and told businesses to shut. Pretty big deal for a capital city. Kerri is up in Brisbane, so hopefully she checks in and tells us she's okay!

Food will go up, but otherwise won't affect us much. Maybe the weather system with some rain may hit us in a couple of days but it won't be anywhere near the 250km winds like it was. I do feel sorry for the guys in the North, it sounds terrifying and horrific.

The filing is done. Next task is a tub of shredding. I went out and bought a box of garbage bags. Gradually, we'll work towards inputting.
