KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Good luck on the applications, Peggy!

I've always loved the idea of swing dancing! It looks like so much fun! @Sarah - I could never convince my husband to do something like that so you should totally take advantage or your partner's potential willingness so I can live vicariously through your stories of the classes! LOL.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I agree with KimeyDiann!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Well. Back in October my wife got her teeth cleaned and the hygentist told her how her and her husband are horrible dancers but took lessons and was so much fun. Then came the we need to take dance lessons. Now. As of November I have agreed to do it but as of today I just haven't had the time. I assure you the I don't have time excuse is reaching its end quickly. I'm not going to be able to avoid this much longer . We don't even know what type of dance lessons were gonna get

It's either $30 for 45 minutes or $45 for 30 minutes for a private session.

message 1254: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I can't wait to hear about your dance lessons too, Travis! Even if it doesn't sound like you are excited about them.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Sounds like fun, Travis! What kind of dancing you guys going to do when you get there?

Thanks Kimey! Interesting thing, we've been in autumn since 1 March. For some reason, you guys go off the equinoxes, we go off the calendar months. But as March is really summer here anyway, it makes no difference.

I just booked my European adventure. 5 countries in 5 weeks. I panicked as I couldn't find the deal I found last week, and then once I found it I just booked it. It is now real.

message 1263: by Peggy (last edited Mar 21, 2017 04:30AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We make a distinction between meteorological spring (or any other season) and astronomical. The first is March 1, the other is March 21. But in practice everyone says Spring starts March 21, though there's always mention on the news of the start of the meteorological Spring on March 1.

edit: oh wait, that's basically what you said. Read before you comment, Peggy!

How exciting Rusalka! I want details! Where exactly are you going? When?

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments The final list is England, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

No idea what we're going to do in Ireland yet besides Dublin. Want to go through the Black Forest in Germany then up to Berlin. So seemed to make sense to fly into Zurich and head north to Konstanz then into the Forest. Then we will go down to Prague and fly home.

message 1268: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Oh and sorry, end of July and August. Fly into London, drive up to the Dales, and then down to Manchester to visit my other cousin and fly to Dublin.

Your trip sounds amazing, Rusalka! I'm not jealous in the slightest ;)

message 1270: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Hah thanks Lisa. The thing with living so far away is you have to make the 40 hours of travelling to and from Europe worth it!

We're going to Adelaide in June as well. I've never been to Adelaide even though it's 2.5 hours away by plane and a capital city and our old housemate, one of Lexx's oldest friends, has lived there for over 12 years. But throw in 40 hours of travelling and I visit all the things!

message 1271: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments That does sound like an amazing trip. I look forward to hearing about it when you return. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

I have a list of places to visit in Ireland. When we visited, my hubby kept asking the locals the best places to visit. We didn't get to most of them. If you need ideas, I can give you the list I compiled from their suggestions.

40 hours is a lot of traveling time. Of course, travel time is not a real issue for me, just more time to read. I love audiobooks on long flights.

message 1272: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Thanks Kristie! I may take you up on that. Lexx's sister went there last year and we have a comprehensive spreadsheet from her too, but would be good to mix it up a bit. And asking the locals is always the best thing to do I think. Except when it comes to Lexx and I asking for restaurant recommendations, people always recommend us Nandos... I'm not sure what I should read into that.

I have managed to get our flights down to 21 hours this time, which is great. Compared with the 38 hours of travelling to Sint Maarten last year, this will be okay.

...

I just remembered that it won't... Last flight to Melb from here arrives at 7pm, and we have to check in for our flight at 3am. That takes us up to 33 hours travelling... Such first world problems.

I agree! That is a long time to be travelling so it's best to make it worth your time. I am already looking forward to hearing all about it :)

It's funny how we often don't visit places that are reasonably close to us. There is so much of the UK that I haven't seen, including many places in England, despite the fact that I have lived here all my life.

message 1274: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Sounds like you have an awesome trip planned, Rusalka. I'm just a bit envious. Five weeks!

message 1275: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I didn't know that about calendar months marking the change in seasons for some places. I've only ever known about the equinox and solstice.

@Rusalka, your trip sounds amazing! Like Lisa, I'm not jealous at all either. LOL.

You are all spot on about visiting places that are close by. I swear I saw my family more often when I lived 6 hours away than I do now that they are mostly less than 15 minutes away.

message 1276: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Your trip sounds fab Rusalka. I am happy to admit that I'm jealous. I totally get why you would have a prolonged trip when travelling that far. It seems pointless going all that way for 2 weeks. When we have gone to Thailand, the minimum we've been for is 3 weeks otherwise most of it is taken up recovering from all the travelling. Make the most of it i say! I am desperate for a holiday. I know I went away twice last year for two long weekends but I feel the need for a longer holiday. It's been a while since I've had one of those. Still looking about for something that takes my fancy.

message 1277: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments I agree! Take as much time as you can!

I could definitely use a vacation right now, but the timing is not good. (I suppose that's half the reason I could use a vacation.) I want to relax on a beach with a book and that's it. No thinking or decision making. Well, maybe a drink. And some good food. Oh, now I'm just daydreaming...

message 1278: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Vacation is always good!

I still have to plan our summer trip. I usually love doing that but for some reason I feel daunted this year and I'm postponing.

message 1279: by KimeyDiann (last edited Mar 21, 2017 01:49PM) (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I need to start planning a trip too. But I have no idea where I want to go this year. I'm really having to watch my vacation days this year since I'm taking some of them to drive back and forth to visit my husband where he is working. Right now I don't even feel any excitement over the possibility of planning a trip, and I normally love planning trips. I figure the vacation planning bug will bite soon enough though.

message 1280: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Mar 22, 2017 04:40AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Well, 4.5 weeks. I have factored in 3.5 days (we'll arrive home in the morning) of sleeping, recovering (it's the bad jetlag way coming home, day 2 your turn into a zombie) and washing.

We will not be getting our nephews to housesit this time, so hopefully i will not have to wash every. single. item of my linen cupboard and kitchen cupboards, along with our travelling items, when I arrive home this time.

At least they can't sink your home. I dread having to go away for any length of time and having someone to boat sit. Eek! We have been away and other boater friends have kept an eye on it which has been fine but we've not had anyone boat sit as such.

message 1284: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments Sounds smart, Rusalka. You don't need that again!

message 1285: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Oh, I remember you talking about the mess your nephews left you with! Do you have someone more reliable to housesit for you this time?

Sink the house! That is a scary thought!

message 1286: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'll come boat sit, Sarah. It would be a fun adventure.

Hopefully you can find someone more responsible to house sit this time Rusalka.

message 1287: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I remember that mess too Rusalka. It's really not what you want to find when you come back home after a holiday.

My parents-in-law always do a major house cleaning in our house when we are away. For some reason his mom really likes doing that, and his dad just tags along. I don't think he's given much choice ;-)

message 1288: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments That would be so nice to have someone do a major clean while you're away.

My mother used to do it when she'd come up for a visit. One day, I found her standing on a 45 gallon drum washing the windows outside. Another time, she was cleaning out the deep freeze, just her backside and legs hanging out. My dad used to say that she didn't know how to sit down.

This is the best! I'd love to come home to a freshly cleaned home after being away.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I went to spend the weekend with my husband last month and my sister takes care of my German Shepherd dog while I'm gone. When I got home, she had swept the floors, dusted, and cleaned the shower for me! It was my birthday and she said she knew that would be a better gift than buying me something. And it was!

I don't reckon he'll go for it. It could be a way of getting him to buy something really special for you though. Clean the house or treat you to a day at the spa?! I know which one my partner would opt for!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Just heard that there has been what is likely a terror attack outside the Houses of Parliament in London. Absolutely horrible :( At least one person has been killed and dozens more have been badly injured. My thoughts go out to everyone involved and I hope anyone in this group who either lives in London or knows people that do, are safe.

Yes, it started about 2:40 this afternoon. It's still ongoing as we speak.

message 1298: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks for letting me know Lisa as I had no idea. It's all a bit of a jumble right now from reading that. Looks like a police officer was stabbed inside the gates of Parliament. The attacker was shot. But then a car has been running down pedestrians Mr Mercedes style on westminster bridge. But when I read something about a woman who had died, it said she was found under the wheel of a bus. I think I need to watch some actual news footage.

There is a live news broadcast on BBC1 at the moment. It's still unclear as to what exactly happened. They are not even sure if the attack is even over at the moment.

message 1300: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I heard about it too. Horrible :(

It's exactly 1 year after the attack in Brussels today, I wonder if that's a coincidence.
