ARCHIVE Team Challenge: UNO 2017

QUESTIONS?: UNO Team Challenge
So I'm looking at reading a couple of anthologies during the challenge time and wondering what the rules are for those. Can I use any of the author names or only the anthology editor? Then I'm assuming I can use any location/character used in any of the the stories. Anthologies can fit so many cards I'm actually wondering if they are even okay to read for this xD
On a related note, where is the cut off line for when a character's name can or cannot be used for a card? A few of my team members have asked and my answer has been "if you took the character out and the plot wouldn't change then that character can't be used." Is that about right?

For anthologies, yes use the editor. We are ok for characters and settings in the anthologies - it does mean you can probably cover a lot, but we felt it would be too mean to ban them ;)
With characters, that's about right. We generally want them to have some dialogue and meaning to the story. Not just a hotel bellhop called Victor that opens a door, for example ;)
Question: are we allowed books that haven't yet been published? I have quite a few advance reader copies I'd like to tap into if possible. Thanks

Cathy wrote: "When using locations, can we use country, state, or city names?"It depends on the book. If it is described as 'Los Angeles' in the book, for example, then that would be the location (not the state or the country).
If they start in LA and do a road trip to NY stopping along the way and there really is no main setting then you would use the country name.
Hopefully that makes sense!
Are audiobooks okay? I vaguely remember it not being allowed before unless I am thinking of something else.
Emma wrote: "Are audiobooks okay? I vaguely remember it not being allowed before unless I am thinking of something else."Audiobooks are okay to use. You'll use the information from the default edition.
Are embedded words allowed? For example, will Seer of Sevenwaters work for seven?
Also, how about this for location? Seven Gates Cemetery? I'm not sure what state or city that is yet but it's from The Sinner
Nichole wrote: "Are embedded words allowed? For example, will Seer of Sevenwaters work for seven?

No for embedded words.
With the location I haven't read the book, so can't definitively say.
But if that is the setting that the book refers to then that is what you would use.
For example, I'm reading Pearl in a Cage at the moment and it is about a small town called Woody Creek. Although they refer to the town being in Victoria, in Australia at some point ; it is only ever "woody creek" so if I was deciding the setting for it then I would say the town name.
Or for an example where the setting is not a town, with the first Harry Potter book, I would consider that setting to be Hogwarts.
I didn't think so for the Sevenwaters :P It was worth a shot though, lol!Location, makes sense to me! Thanks!
Reading this thread is usually a good idea for those kinds of questions.Taken from there:

I have a question about an author's name. The author is Raven St. Pierre Raven St. Pierre. Could I use this for name starting with S or P or both? Thanks
Bebe20018 wrote: "I have a question about an author's name. The author is Raven St. Pierre Raven St. Pierre. Could I use this for name starting with S or P or both? Thanks"That gets alphabetised as starting with S so it can work for 6
:)
I and reading a book with a character called Uncle Hugh. Could I use that character to cover a 3 card (H)?TIA!
Laura wrote: "I and reading a book with a character called Uncle Hugh. Could I use that character to cover a 3 card (H)?TIA!"
Yes. Uncle isn't his name, but an honorific of sorts.
Jenny wrote: "are cookbooks allowed?"Usually they are full of pictures so would be like graphic novels where the word count would need to be verified
If someone is known as Princess of Professor is that allowed as P or is it just the name? Sorry if this has already been asked.
Emma wrote: "If someone is known as Princess of Professor is that allowed as P or is it just the name? Sorry if this has already been asked."It needs to be the characters name or nickname in the book. I'm not familiar with that name so i probably haven't read the book and I can't say definitively
Sorry That was my bad typing it was meant to be Princess or Professor, as in Professor Snape, would just be S then. Sorry for confusion.

How do we verify the word count?
Jenny wrote: "Karen ⊰✿ wrote: "Jenny wrote: "are cookbooks allowed?"Usually they are full of pictures so would be like graphic novels where the word count would need to be verified"

Some books can't be verified unfortunately. But a couple of good sites to check are:
Reading Length
arbookfind
And this is the point where I admit to being human and vow to never find new tricks late at night. After some more searching I noticed that Reading Length don't have the accurate word count, only estimations from the page count. Which means that for cook books, graphic novels etc the word count can't be trusted. So please only use arbookfind for verification.
im reading a non fiction novel, its not listed on arbookfind, does that mean i cant use it because the word count cant be verified ? Do I Look Fat in This?: Life Doesn't Begin Five Pounds from Now
Carrie wrote: "Does The count for title starting with T?"From the rules:

We ask Captains to verify wordcounts for books that are marked as children's, graphic novels, or poetry. So, for example, If your book has lots of images and isn't a book where the page count can be relied upon then it would need a word count to be used
its a self help books , it doesn't have pictures but some pages have lists or letters, but most of its like a regular book. so I wasn't sure if it counted for page count or word count.
also for chicken soup for the soul books, the stories are like 2-3 pages long. so im assuming characters arent allowed! haha . so i can do the editor or subtitle right? or is the title chicken soup ? sorry about all my questions !! :)

Thanks
Andrea wrote: "also for chicken soup for the soul books, the stories are like 2-3 pages long. so im assuming characters arent allowed! haha . so i can do the editor or subtitle right? or is the title chicken soup..."Characters should have some dialogue and be meaningful to the story. So with Non fiction, it depends on the book.
For example, a memoir is non-fiction, but because it is told like a story you can use the characters as per the usual character rules. If the book is more like a factual account of something - let's say a battle during WWII, then Churchill wouldn't be a character as he is just mentioned as part of the facts, he isn't there as a character.
For titles, it is whatever the title is on Goodreads (not the subtitle) and we use the editor where there are multiple authors.
I hope that helps!
Rachael wrote: "For the March cards, can they include books that have been started in February?"Yes, they can be started in February, but they need to be finished in March. :)
This one may be long: The cover on the book below i would consider red by according to the color breakdown in the link for the march color scheme it is mostly brown. So does that mean that although most people would call this book red I can not use it as red because the color scheme?

There is a thread in the Captains group specifically for these kinds of things as sometimes the colour extractor is a bit off because of the difference with image colours.
But since you've asked the question here, this one has "mandarin orange" as the primary colour, which is actually red to a human eye and we accept it as red. :)

Tammie wrote: "I'm going to read an 'anthology'...can I utilize all of the authors names as possibles for UNO cards?"We use the name listed on Godreads as the editor in these instances
