I'm going to put by Angie Thomas here. While the book doesn't come out until February of this year, I'm still thinking about T.H.U.G. (acronymed that way on purpose). It's been almost two weeks since I finished this ARC and there still a lot to think about.

I knew a small amount about this book- that it came out of Black Lives Matter- but that was it. Going in blind was a good idea. And Starr, the narrator, is so fresh.

I also feel like I want to make a Spotify playlist for this book, it really lends itself to one. Some Will Smith, some Drake, some Kendrick...it's good.

All American Boys is an absolute must read, especially in our current political climate; many people must deal with racial tension or even violence and this book addresses it from two standpoints: Rashad, a black teen hospitalized by a police officer after a suspected robbery, and Quinn, a white teen who saw it all and needs to decide what to do.

Both characters have distinct voices and unique battles to fight. This was thought-provoking and inspiring and an important book.

We just got Amira's Voice in! The cover is beautiful and it sounds like such a great middle grade read. I like to switch up between the levels I read so this will go on the TBR list somewhere.

I also was really looking forward to the release of The Hate U Give and I'm glad to hear it's living up to its hype as a thought-provoking work!

We just got Amina's Voice too! I'm pretty picky about the middle grades I add to YA, but this seemed like a unique voice to add. I look forward to trying to find time to read it.

As for The Hate U Give- same! I totally loved it and really needed someone to talk to about it, although I had to wait because I read an ARC back in December. It's the one YA book I've been recommending to everyone- YA thru Adults. It's totally thought-provoking and SO well timed! And Starr's voice is just so fresh and realistic. Her love of shoes <3

We just read Gabi, a Girl in Pieces for book club, and my students loved it!! We have a large Hispanic population, and they do not get to read nearly enough books featuring a Hispanic MC, so they loved this one!!

I really enjoyed it too and am so happy that we read it!

Looking forward to The Hate U Give as well! So many great books!

That's awesome! I'm not sure what grade level you have, but Marcus Sedgwick has a new book coming out called Saint Death that I believe is about a Hispanic boy trying to escape his bad circumstances. I don't know much more about it though.

I'm super stoked about the push for diverse books. It reminds me though- that I still need to read Rani Patel in Full Effect. Jeez TBR!
