Thanks for the warning. The last book I read by her wasn't very good either, and it kind of soured me on this author: The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror . I swear -- what's up with the fascination with torture these days?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments Currently reading Fatal Enquiry, by Will Thomas. This is a historical thriller, set in 1880s London.

3 stars. For a last book in a series: disappointing :(

Parting Shot by Linwood Barclay

This is a companion novel to the Promise Falls series by Linwood Barclay. I highly recommend all the books! Gripping, unpredictable, intense, fantastic, fascinating characters!

Thank you to my friends from this group who highly recommended it to me. I'd read the other three books and didn't know Barclay had written a fourth!

William 😢
I’ve just rejected/aborted The Girl in Kellers Way (confused and dull), The Ocean at the End of the Lane (child abuse), The Good Daughter (again, child abuse), and The Susan Effect (cod-science bull crap)

Ted Chiang's Stories of Your Life and Others had 2 good and one outstanding short stories (The Story of Your Life, resulted in the extraordinary movie Arrival), the rest of the book was pretty awful.

On the upside, Sheena Kamal's Eyes Like Mine was fabulous. A truly incredible first-book. Well done!

The Sudden Appearance of Hope by Claire North is a masterpiece, as is her newest book The End of the Day. Genius, extraordinary, incredible. I am in awe.

I started reading Pietr the Latvian, by Georges Simenon last night, book 1 in the Maigret series. I've been watching Maigret on tv (the French-language version) on MHz and loving it.

Earlier in the thread Bill mentioned he was enjoying the series with Michael Gambon as Maigret. I recommended the series with Bruno Cremer, who is Maigret to me.
As for Pietr the Latvian: I found it interesting to see, in this first novel, that Simenon had not quite gotten to know the Maigret who would carry the series to fame. It takes him several novels to settle down to the essential 'commissaire' that Cremer captures so well.

I just bought the Gambon as Maigret dvds, but I doubt he can be as Maigret as Bruno Cremer is for me.

I have both the Gambon series and Cremer series. Not a thing wrong with either one. It's just that the Cremer production is a little grittier and hits closer to the mark for me. Maybe it's just the French dialogue, but I think there is something more.
How about getting back to Pietr the Latvian, I'm looking for my copy so I'll be ready for your comments.

Unless it's another Bill, I've been enjoying the Rowan Atkinson remakes. I haven't seen the Gambon ones yet.

Lovely to know people are still reading Dorothy Sayers. I devoured them all half-a-century ago in a very short sitting, and have been wondering how well they have kept up with the times--not quite the world of Benedict Cumberbatch and "Sherlock" on PBS Mystery (though prhaps not so far from "Father Brown").

message 1027: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Radley | 558 comments I find them "jolly" fun and intriguing in the sense of how women were portrayed by men when in work and just how times have moved on and sometimes how familiar it all is. There are certain um err sayings that haven't held up over time the portrayals of black people and other races which do tend to make you wince lol. I feel it's has a similar feel to agatha christie's poirot and a just a touch of Sherlock and Watson fun.

If you're enjoying the Wimsey books, you might like to try E.C. Bentley's Trent books. He only wrote 3 but Trent is a lot like Wimsey.

Yes, this is another series and completely different. It centers around a policeman and a magician who served in the War together in an unit whose job was to create effects to make Hitler think the British were stronger than they were. It's set in the 50's. I don't think it's as good as the Galloway series which I love but it's growing on me.

Zoe Radley | 558 comments Have just finished have his carcase by Dorothy L Sayers and wow what a book so many twists and turns and a lot of theorising which made it almost feel real with no other death in sight.... I am shocked lol. This is a massive book well about 400 or so pages and wow to keep me reading about just one death is an amazing feat and also to have witty byplay between the main characters... well what a treat. Am totally loving her writing style and yes those two little lovebirds (though not yet) are going on like well a normal couple would when they first are finding their feet with one another. A++ now I will be reading hangmans holiday yes it's by the same author and yes I know not really in the series as it's a collection of short stories but it feels like it should flow so there.
