ROUND UP OF THE YEAR

What a fabulous year we have had at Devon Book Club. We now have around 1800 people connected through Facebook, Twitter @BookDevon and on our Goodreads pages. This is around double what it was this time last year.

Best of all has been the friendships we've made, book news and views we've exchanged and the contribution we have made to the literary and wider community of this wonderful county (and beyond, as so many friends have joined us from across the country and around the world).

We've had at least one book giveaway every month, we launched #devonbookhour (which runs 8-9Pm on Twitter every Monday - starting again on 16/1/17), we've supported the festivals in Tiverton, Sidmouth, Chudleigh and Appledore, we were at the North Devon Diversity Festival in the Summer and also supported the reopening of the fabulous Crediton Bookshop, we've had a picnic in the park and a cocktail evening just before Xmas.

We supported the launch of Libraries Unlimited in April and are now in touch with dozens of fabulous Devon authors. I've loved the filmed discussions with some lovely authors who let me test my very rudimentary interviewing skills on them. Thanks to Jane Corry, Rebecca Weeks, Rebecca Gibson, Mark Norman (and the Circle of Spears Team), Marissa Farrar and Tess Read for their patience.

So - what about 2017? I've got some ideas, including some more bookshop events (we didn't do any this year), a "Books, BBQ and Beach" event in the Summer (on a North Devon beach), a Garden Party has been suggested by Kathryn Aalto . Also, I hope, some joint events with Libraries Unlimited. One of our members who is in the travel business has also suggested a holiday/writers retreat in Tuscany! And, of course, book giveaways, more interviews, lots of lovely bookchat - all I need is more time!!

Which brings me to two requests
a) is this a good menu? Any other ideas?
b) is anyone willing to help me - even in just a small way

I am not going to form any kind of formal organisation - that would defeat the purpose of this flexible, organic community. I'm not forming committees with official roles. But the more people who join in (even as a one-off) then the more we can do.

Most of all, I just want to thank you for your support, encourage you to post comments and make suggestions and enjoy what I believe is quite a unique community of book lovers.

Wishing you all a very happy New Year

Ian

Chrissie Parker | 8 comments Happy New Year to you Ian, and to the other members too. I've not been as involved as I'd like due to various reasons, but it has been great to meet others, attend the Libraries Unlimited launch and catch up via #devonbookhour

The above you suggest sounds great, and it looks like a good year ahead for the Devon Book Club.

I don't have a lot of spare time, but if I can ever do anything to help, then I will if I can :)

Carol Dobson | 798 comments Well done Ian, a wonderful account of last year, or nearly last year! I didn't realize you had been quite so busy with so many different ideas and literary happenings. It has also been a surprise to me just how many authors there seem to be in Devon. I suppose it might be because we are very much a retirement county. If I can help I will, although I don't tend to be very active as I don't like driving, so I like to take the train, which is not, frankly, a very good service. (I still miss the old branch line to Ilfracombe. The steam train used to really struggle to get up the incline out of the town and it was one of the most beautiful lines I have seen in England.)
Happy New Year to everyone.

Kathy Shuker (kathyshuker) | 523 comments Congratulations, Ian, for everything you have achieved with the group. It's amazing in such a short time. Hope you are having a good break over this festive period!

Happy New Year to you and Angela, and to all the DBC.

Angela (arose) | 25 comments You're doing a wonderful job with this group Ian, and I'm so pleased to be a part of it. I may not comment or turn up at events (shy and usually out of my home area) but I do read the posts and now have a small library of local author's books.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year and look forward to connecting, maybe even meeting, during 2017.

Happy New Year to you, too, Ian ... and heartfelt thanks for setting up the Book club and for all your hard work all the year round. I hope you have had, and continue to have, a lovely 'Festive' break.
New Year's Resolution: will try to get to some DBC events, this year!
Also, Happy New Year to all DBCers, from Carole (aka DrMama).

Teresa Driscoll | 3 comments Happy New Year to everyone and congratulations Ian on achieving so much! Here's to wonderful reading in 2017...So sorry the Xmas cocktail party clashed with something on my calendar. Thanks to all for your good wishes - be lovely to see you at events if it works out this year and to hear your news and views at other times but there is never any pressure.

Best Wishes

Ian

Elizabeth Ducie (elizabethducie) | 33 comments Happy New Year to all DBCers. Especially to you, Ian; and huge thanks for all the support you've given to the Devon writing/reading community in the past year. Looking forward to lots more activity in 2017. As someone said earlier: I can't commit to anything regular, but if there's a one-off I can help with, I'd be delighted. (And I'm still happy to be videoed once you start the interviews again.) Best wishes, Kate/Elizabeth
