Over on the "what We are Reading" thread, we have a little discussion about William Faulkner's novel Absalom, Absalom!

Seamus is finishing the sound and the fury and has this book about so i suggested we read it as a group.

If you dont own this book, and cant get to the bookstore or the library, you can read it here:
http://reading-everyday.com/235/Absal...

But now we get to the nitty gritty:

Who wants to be part of a group read?
Who would be interested in reading this selection?
Is there another book more members would find interesting?
When should we start the reading?
and lastly, any volunteers to lead the group?

Please speak up!
We have not been terribly active since the demise of our beloved Shelfari, and i know some of us are hoping i can get a Shelfari style discussion board up at my literary journal, but so far, i have had no luck, so in the meantime, i would love it if we did a little community activity.

I would like to take part in a group read! However, as I mentioned, I have already read "Sound and Fury," and rarely do I reread books (too many unread books, too little time). I guess I could make an exception for this great group.

Per your second query, I am currently reading "The Underground Railroad" by Colin Whitehead. And the next book on my reading list is Paul Beatty's "The Sellout." I would gladly (selfishly?) recommend either of these two works as a group read selection.

The suggestion is Absalom, Absalom, not Sound and Fury. Is that more attractive for you?

Scott Cox (tapbirds) | 43 comments Yes! Absalom, Absalom is on my TBR list.

Verna LaBounty | 2 comments I would be interested in reading Absalom, Absalom as I haven't read Faulkner in ages and ages.

Vera, Scott, Seamus and me! I think we have a quorum!
Now let's set a date, pick a leader and invite our friends.

I am good to start between Jan 7-10 or Jan 15 or after

Marc (monkeelino) Count me in!
I actually bought a used copy a few months ago to replace an unread copy a neighbor borrowed and never returned.

BTW, in case you don't already know, group moderators can send a "Broadcast Message" to all group members letting them know about book selection and start dates (we do this once per month in another group I'm in to announce group reads). The polling function on GR is nice for voting on reads or other issues you want member feedback on.

thanks marc!

Ruth I read Absalom, Absalom many years ago in the Pre-Goodreads Age, when I was on a massive Faulkner kick with fellow readers from Constant Reader.

I'm afraid I'm on a reading slump right now for the first time in my life. I need some easy reading to slide back in, and Faulkner ain't it.

Enjoy!

Scott Cox (tapbirds) | 43 comments For a group leader, I nominate either Seamus or Marc. That's mighty good of me, isn't it? :) Seriously, I think that they would make excellent moderators for a group discussion.

I second them both, duel at sunrise to settle!

message 14: by Marc (new)

Marc (monkeelino) That's mighty flattering of you both. My GR participation can be a little bit erratic, but if people are OK with that, I'm in. I'd be happy to co-moderate with Seamus if he's up for it (or just participate in the discussion if he wants to run the show).

Georgia Doyle
to: Anthony Watkins
subject: re: [Better Than Starbucks] A New Group Read!

Count me in! I suggest we start next weekend. We could even make 2017 the year of Faulkner and read a Faulkner per month. Or make it a year of southern writers and go on to a Walker Percy, Eudora Welty, etc.

Georgia, i am good to start on the 7th or 8th. lets see how much support there is for a dozen great southern writers and then we can plan out 2017. i would certainly love it.

And one more!

Kayla Naidoo will be joining us from South Africa.

In other news, unless anyone objects, lets start the read next weekend, with Marc leading us.
Marc, you might think about what sort of start you want to post and start a new thread title something like "Absalom, Absalom! BTS Group Read"

btw, for some reason, the format here likes to cut the links off and send you to a broken link, so for those reading on line, try this:

Seamus Duggan (seamusduggan) | 69 comments I'm ok with Marc to lead. All sounds good. Looking forward to it.

Andrea Renfrow | 1 comments my reading and writing load is heavy, but I'll see if we have a copy available and if so I'll call it fate and join. it's about time I read a Faulkner.

AK! That is great. Marc will be "calling us to order soon, maybe today.

message 25: by Marc (new)

Marc (monkeelino) A couple threads to get us started are now here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_folder/328693

Anthony, if you want to bump this folder up on the list of discussions, you can go to "Discussions" and then edit folders. Makes no difference to me, but new folders default to the bottom of the list. I'm completely open to ideas if people want to take this in a different direction or want it structured differently.
