Thoughts:
I'm just glad I have only about 3 weeks before the next book's release. Loved the book but that didn't stop me from thinking how the setup was a bit like Singh's PsyChangeling series with the different houses and their 'magical abilities.' I enjoyed the banter between Rogan and Nevada and can't help but wish the book had a dual POV just to get into Rogan's head. I think the ending with Adam Pierce was a bit anticlimatic and hurried. After all the excitement on how it was going to last he just easily lost despite the artifact being feared to be very powerful if placed into the wrong hands.

I am looking forward to more Grandma Frida and Mother scenes in the next 2 books. I hope we get to see how Bren grows up... maybe a spinoff? ;)

Kaity | 743 comments Kathleen wrote: "This series has one of the ugliest covers ever!"

I don't know what the publishers were thinking, they really are terrible. It kinda makes me sad too. I know there are people who won't pick up the books because of it, both because it's so poorly done and because it makes it seem like the series is super trashy romance.

Kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 206 comments If I were a reader who's never heard of Ilona Andrews and came upon this cover I'd never pick it up because as you said it looks like it's trashy romance. Have you read her Edge series? I'm a bit on the fence on that one. Otherwise am following all their other series.

I've only read the first two in that series and am working on rereading them so I can get to 3 and 4. I enjoy it but they're the weakest of their backlist IMO. They feel like early writing, if that makes sense (the female MC in the first book has a great, unique family but it majorly pales in comparison to the quality/intricacies of Nevada's.) They're also a little romance heavier which doesn't bother me.

message 513: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments I always think of them as Fantasy rather than UF. I've only read the 1st 2 of them as well. Not my favourite.

Review - Really enjoyed this story, definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and I didn't manage to guess some of the biggest reveals! Unfortunately the romance didn't really work for me... The hero kept her too in the dark in every respect for me to believe them as anything more than a fling.

Kaity | 743 comments Team 2 is 2 away from bingo, twice.
They need angels and shifters.
Or they need series to start and magic.
They are 3 shelves behind.

And there are now 3 teams that are one call away from bingo. 1 team needs magic and 2 teams need urban fantasy.

Kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 206 comments It's a game of luck! Hope we get lucky!

Kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 206 comments Book: One Fell Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles, #3) by Ilona Andrews by Ilona Andrews
Shelf: Owned Not yet read
Rating: 5
Date Read: 12 May

Thoughts:
I think this is my favorite of the series so far. I adore Helene! I hope she gets to have her own series where she's all grown up and we get to see more of her skills. While I think it's cute that Arland gets some kind of happy ever after, it feels more of a fan service of who became his partner. No qualms just that I think I would have liked it better if they could have just become like good friends and he be close to Helen but he gets a different girl. I hope Klaus join the party soon so it will be a happy reunion. I liked how Marais joined in the fun too!

Kat (wanderfulbooks) (wanderfulbooks) | 206 comments Book: Timeless (Parasol Protectorate, #5) by Gail Carriger by Gail Carriger
Shelf: Steampunk
Rating: 3.5
Date Read: 14 May

Thoughts:
Quite torn how to rate this one actually. Maybe because it's been too long since I've read the previous books that's why I feel a bit disconnected but I can't help but sigh every once in a while thinking how long the book is. I found Alexia mildy irritating at times. It's funny how some of the things I thought I found endearing in the first book, I found mildy irritating now. It's just that it's the last book already and I guess I was expecting different things. I might still read Prudence's series as I want to read on Alexia and Macon from someone else's POV!

Review - I enjoyed the plot of this one a lot but holy crap are the main characters obnoxious. Clary spends most of the book shrieking and whining Simon's name and Jace has fits of brooding left and right. I'm looking forward to the next book because Clary was getting a much less useless by the end of this book and might actually be able to contribute when they're in danger.

Shelf #17: Steampunk
The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook
Book: The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook
Date Completed: May 17
Rating: 3 star
REVIEW:

I think it's time to dust up my TBR and read those poor books I've left neglected. I was going to read Heart of Steel for this shelf, but as soon as I started it, I realized that I did not remember the first book at all. So I read this book, instead.

I'm surprized by how much I love this book! I loved the Steampunk elements of it- loved the bodily attachements and airships, though zombie fights are not really something I enjoy.

Anyway, I'm glad I re-read this book. I'll read book 2 soon.

Somthing like this actually happened to me. I'm almost a full time Kindle reader nowadays. I wanted to buy a paperback of Burn for Me. But when I went to the store and bought it, my parents and brother were looking at me weird and said, "I didn't know you read these sort of trashy romances!"

Well, I do read trashy romances, but BFM is more Urban Fantasy. I'm sure there are a lot of people missing out on thia book because they think it is romance-oriented.

I've been meaning to try this one for a long time. I hated another book of hers though so I can't seem to bring myself to pick it up. I read Demon Angel (which everyone says to skip - but it's the first in a series so I 'can't'), it was terrrribbblllee. I don't remember anything else about it :P

I have pop figures of Harry and Newt and a mystery mini of Scabbers (bleg). Then a pygmy puff from WWoHP :) Then the books, of course.

I'm trying so hard not to collect them because then I will end up with ALL of them from everything I like. I have the HP ones, a few superhero ones from subscription boxes, and Sven and Olaf from Frozen :P

message 533: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments My hubby hates them so I don't buy any, my Dr Who one was a gift from my niece for Christmas . I don't mind so much cause I have a Tardis collection, and lots of various Dr Who figures, a Castle with Dragons, an Enterprise & hubby has Death Stars & Daleks & sonic screwdrivers & the odd Indiana Jones bits & bobs.

I've tried stopping now cause they are a nightmare to have to keep dusting.

I can understand that. I find them adorable but they're a specific style and kinda hard to find space for. They're just tippy enough that it needs to be somewhere fairly permanent.

Sounds like fun collections!! :)

Dusting is the worst!

Kaity | 743 comments From the weekly update...

Team 2 is 1 away from bingo.
They need angels.
They are 3 shelves behind.

(We're all caught up now, I believe)

Winning shelves (if teams get all caught up):
angels
magic*
series to start
fae
UF
science fiction

* the only winning shelf needed by only one team

So this means that next week WILL be a winning shelf for some team(s), assuming that they can get caught up this week.

Kathleen, have you posted your book choice for this week? If you haven't please post it here immediately.

Kait, Laura, Kathleen, can you three finish your book and post reviews before shelf call tomorrow? I want to have it stamped, or at least have the stamp requested before shelf call tomorrow. I will be done with my book tonight. I'm reading Cynful (Halle Shifters, #2) by Dana Marie Bell for this shelf.

message 547: by [deleted user] (new)

There are several teams needing only 1 more shelf to win. Since we share probable win category 'angels' with Team 6, I want all of us to have an angel book picked from the list. Please pick something that is either short or that we can read quickly. If 'angels' is called tomorrow, we will be in a race to win with Team 6.

To reitrate, please pick an angel book from the list and have it ready before shelf call tomorrow!
