Kenzie | 2 comments Hey guys, I'm bored and home and willing to do some beta-reading for whoever might need me. I'm willing to read pretty much anything, but I'm particularly familiar with YA and adult literary fiction.

I worked in publishing (alongside an agent) for two years, and I also currently work as a writing tutor for one of the best writing colleges in the world, so I promise I know what I'm doing.

Post a summary of your book below and I'll message you if I'm interested (I probably will be).

What John wants, can’t be bought.

John’s dad, Henry, was orphaned in Peru at a time of great violence and bloodshed. Grandpa Crester, a Nebraska farmer, adopted him and Henry grew to become a very busy software-mogul.  He loves those close to him, but has little time or patience for anything other than his business.

Henry hires a detective agency to find his paternal father in Peru.

Awki, a native of the Peruvian Andes, is poor in material wealth but rich in spirit and tradition. He comes to the states and embarks in a series of adventures with his son Henry, and his grandson John.

Randy Smith | 68 comments Hello Kenzi. I hope you might be interested in reading my YA fantasy novel. Here's a blurb, or query letter to give you an idea of what it's like.
Mike and his girlfriend, Violet, are strolling down a darkened hallway when it blinks away. He's shocked to find himself somewhere else when he wakes from the fall—alone on another world. Magic is real here. Also, it appears that Violet's there too—shocking.
None of these shocks measure up to when he discovers Violet can do magic. He doesn't learn about that until she pops in while he's comforting a young woman whose puppy has been killed. In a magically fuelled rage, his girlfriend turns him into a woman, Michelle. Then Violet disappears to join a group of renegade mages who plan to change the world and everyone in it into playthings for their amusement.
Michelle, still in shock over the recent change, discovers there are many connected worlds. Mother is more than just the operator of the rooming house where Michelle has been staying, she's this world's watcher/gate keeper—the one person able to help Michelle return home. The renegade mages kidnap Mother to force her to open the doorways between all the worlds so that they can play like gods in each of them.
The renegades must be stopped, Mother needs to be rescued, and Michelle wants to go home in her own, male, body. It's going to take a lot of fighting and planning—and luck, and magic.
One last shock. Bonnie, the woman whose dog was killed, is in love with Michelle... and Michelle's falling in love with her. Perhaps home's not so important after all.
I'd love to have your thoughts regarding this novel.
Thanks, Randy

Robert Brown | 18 comments Kenzie,

I would hate for you to be bored going into the new year and if you can stoop to doing a quick alpha read, I'd love to send you my new novella (40k words). Title is "First Ten Days in Heaven. This is the back cover copy:

Michael Greyson awoke one morning feeling better than he had in years. Unfortunately, he soon learned he felt so good because he had died the day before. The upside to being dead was that he made it to heaven. The potential downside was he didn’t believe in heaven, or God.

This is the story of Mike’s first ten days in heaven, helped by his guide Pete, no relation to the famous saint.

It is nowhere near finished. I normally rewrite twenty or more times and this is only edit four. I'm seeking someone who can tell me if my main character Mike is ruminating too much about being dead, the meaning of life, who should be in heaven, is there a god, etc. etc. etc. My concern is my message overwhelming the story. Most other faults and errors should be addressed in the next couple of months. Your background in literary fiction may be my saving grace.

Let me know if you're interested in taking a look.

Thanks,
Bob Brown

Emily Williams | 5 comments Hi Kenzie

I was wondering if you'd be interested in an epistolary romance to relieve your New Years boredom!

When Flora falls unexpectedly pregnant during her final year studies, she hits a huge predicament; continue a recent affair with her handsome but mysterious lecturer who dazzles her with love letters taken from the ancient tale of ‘Abelard and Heloise', or chase after the past with her estranged first love?

But will either man be there to support her during the turmoil ahead...?

It is almost ready to go and just going through a final proof reading and formatting and would love someone else's opinion :-)

Thank Emily

Eve | 7 comments Hi Kenzie,

Happy New Year to you :) I can see that you have lots of offers here of great stories to read, and I hope you don't mind me adding my story to the list in the hope that you might be interested in taking a look. I would be so grateful for any thoughts or advice you might be able to give if you felt this was something that you might be interested in.

We all have that one thing in life that we want to outrun. That one thing that we ignore with all of our might as we metaphorically dump rocks on top of it in a vain attempt to bury it somewhere deep. But, these things don't like to be buried, and these things always find a way to slither back up to the surface when you're not looking.

In a universe where each planet has a ruler, and an underground kingdom of people magically commanding a different element of the universe, life was destined to be harmonious. But, for Meya - who commands the light along with her trusted stars - life has become one long metaphorical rock dump. Her sister, Gaia, who rules the Earth, has cut herself off from her family and shut her humans outside on the surface, whilst her other sister, the feisty Seraphina who rules the Sun, is far too busy loving life to offer any help. To complicate matters further, a rogue group of Knights from the outer universe who command the darkness, are growing suspiciously stronger against Meya's control of the light, and alarmingly begin draining her moons. With her army currently on an Earth mission to save the humans, Meya is forced to take matters into her own hands.

With events spiralling out of control, Meya finds herself going against everything she believes in as she takes drastic action, which has potentially catastrophic consequences for the whole universe. Tensions rise and passions overflow as a crescendo of spectacular battles of magical powers lead Meya to face the one thing she fears the most, and something she thought she had buried a long time ago. As each battle brings her one step closer to the truth, she realises that everything is not always as it first seems, and that maybe there really are no mistakes in the grand, master plan of life.

"Aether" is a 80,000 word Fantasy story with a strong undertone of romance which is written from alternating character perspectives to build this story from both an alien, and a human perspective. As this story is set in current day Los Angeles, the alien observations provide interesting twists on our modern day life, along with thought provoking alternative explanations for our history, our planet and our universe - which I feel (and hope!) gives the reader a relatable foundation from which to begin this fantasy journey.

Thank you for your consideration
Eve

Robin Hammer | 23 comments Hi Kenzie! I have a YA Sci Fi I'd love to get your feedback on if you have time.

Sixteen-year-old Sydney Reynolds fought hard for her spot in the exclusive college-run summer science program. Nothing could make her give up the rock star neurologist future it promises. Not even discovering the program is a cover for a dangerous experiment in mind reading and mind control.

Especially once she finds out how good she is at it.

With the help of these new skills, Sydney plans to say goodbye to her socially awkward, self-doubting days and hello to a confident, accolade-filled future. That is, until Dean--the attractive yet maddeningly unpredictable student aide for the project--begins to suspect her unusual abilities may be a side effect of mind tampering.

Subsequent tests reveal several false memory implants in Sydney's brain, proving that not only are her memories not her memories, but that someone is using her as a spy to steal information about the program without her knowledge. To free herself from her invisible bonds and protect the project's research from being used to enslave minds, Sydney must track down that one who's been digging around inside her head.

But the more pieces of her true past she uncovers, the further she feels from the bright, shiny future she's planned. Surrounded by people literally playing head games, she has no idea who she can trust. Including herself.

Let me know if you’d be interested. Thanks so much!
Robin

Grayson Hooper (hooperg83) | 5 comments Hello Kenzie,

Clyde Robbins is a bright and weathered young man who thrusts himself into the Vietnam War to satiate a mysterious existential longing and escape from a dysfunctional family.

.... and like so many souls who drifted into that conflict, he never returns.

However, finality is not meant to be his. He awakens in a strange world of nebulous origins and direction where he ultimately learns that he is key to an enduring prophecy.

At 60,000 words, this hybrid fantasy/speculative fiction novel explores the fragility of life, the meaning of death, and the value of forging one's own path despite the omnipresent forces that rip at all of us.

If you're interested, I'd be happy to share with you and receive your feedback.

Respectfully,
G.W. Hooper

Yoann Re (yoannre) | 3 comments Hi Kenzie,

What a great profile/experience! You probably have enough to read by now, but just in case, here's a brief description of my story:

I just finished an epic medieval fantasy story, more low than high fantasy. It's for an adult audience and it has 135k words.

There are four point of view characters. One is Alena, an underling (other word for slave) who finds a firestone, the most precious and dangerous object in the Three Kingdoms. She hopes to use the firestone to flee and chase freedom, but brings greater misfortune onto herself in the process.
The second POV character is Hugo, a young woodsman's son who accidentally saves the Order of Sorcerers by nurturing the only magical tree in decades. It earns him a place in the Order and he embarks on a career as a mage. There he will join the sorcerers on a journey to hunt the only dragon alive.
The third POV character is Warric, a hermit who volunteers to hunt the mighty dragon on his own (separately from the sorcerers). His aim is to save his town from further harm and above all else, to protect his daughter who believes another man to be her father.
The final POV character is Carlyn, and hers is an epistolary story. We follow Carlyn's letters with her daughter Reen. She describes the political situation in the Three Kingdoms and her own misadventures as she attempts to prove a kingdom's illegal possession of firedust. Her story eventually ties in with the other POV characters.

Let me know if you're interested :-)

Best,

Yoann

T.A. Chan | 6 comments Dear Kenzie:

Ebraham hunts silvertongues. It's his job to protect the kingdom of Elysia from silvertongues--those born with a voice capable of altering the minds of others. Under orders from the Winter Queen to identify the silvertongue who has infiltrated the Fifth Regiment, he assumes the disguise of Mikhail Pierceson, the son of a wealthy lord, and joins the regiment as a new recruit. With the aid of a magicked amulet, an uncanny ability to read people, and just a touch of overconfidence, he is sure he'll have this mission closed in a blink. In fact, he already has a strong candidate for the suspected silvertongue: Davis Stone. Now all he has to do is send for the Royal guards and claim his reward.

Davis Stone is not a silvertongue. He is, however, a highly respected lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment who also serves as the regiment's second in command. His hatred for silvertongues is notorious throughout the kingdom. It pains him to maintain this false reputation, but he is willing to make sacrifices in order to serve his kingdom, even if it means betraying the silvertongue he secretly loves.

Alivia Youngblood is the captain of the Fifth Regiment. She is also a silvertongue. Ever since taking command, she's transformed the Fifth into one of the strongest fighting forces in the Elysian Army, and she isn't pleased with the addition of a Pierceson to her ranks; Lord Pierceson is a cruel man, and any harm that befalls his son will be her blame to take. With new orders from the Winter Queen to capture Dark Water Point, an enemy stronghold, Alivia's focus is so consumed by the mission on hand and keeping Mikhail Pierceson safe that she fails to see the dangers from those closest to her.

Clocking in at 75,000 words, SILVER AND ICE caters to the YA Fantasy audience, and is sure to please fans of "Throne of Glass" and "The Young Elites."

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Tina Chan

J. Schlenker Hi Kenzie,

"The Color of Cold and Ice" is already published. But, I've been thinking it could use some tweaking. There are five characters. The book starts with the character of Sybil, but I think maybe it should have started with Mark. Also, I think my description needs work. I did have beta readers and I paid for editing. My intuition says it needs something more.

Sybil has dreams; the prophetic kind, although interpreting them correctly is another matter. Her latest dream involves her sister Emerald, who wants to pursue her art once more and move on with her life after losing her husband. John, once felt he was making a difference as an ER doctor, but finds himself slipping away in his Manhattan practice as well as in his marriage. Allison, John’s wife wants to change her ho hum existence with John into something spectacular. Mark, Allison’s brother, a struggling musician, wants to quit rambling in life and find his purpose.
The cold changes everything.

If you should have time, I could use some expert advice.

Thanks,

Jennifer Arntson | 10 comments Una of Ashael is definitely NOT erotica, and although there is a love interest or two - my husband says it's not a Romance Novel, lol! That being said, I would say my audience would tend to lean toward women, generally.

"Stripped of their birthright and shunned by the people of Ashael, Una, and her family are forced to live on the fringe of society as Scavengers. When the family experiences a sudden change of circumstance, Una takes new freedoms, free from the Authority, her family and possibly her fate. Pulled between the life she’s always known and a world where status and rituals are everything, Una struggles to understand a culture that has rejected her family and celebrates death. Time is running out and she can’t stop thinking about what she fears the most: the coming of her womanhood and her subsequent price when she’s taken to the Seller’s Stage. As the Festival of the Three Moons draws near and she learns who she really is, will Una find the courage to do what it takes to ensure her families survival or will she find the faith to follow her heart?"

Chad Kriss | 5 comments Hi Kenzie,

I have a complete about 70k novel that I need to figure out the genre. What I definitely know is that it's adult literary fiction. What the specific genre is for sending query letters out, I have no idea.

Here's what the story is.

Ten-year-old Charlie Carson’s reality is so bad the only way he can deal with his reality is through his imagination. While Richard Hanford hands Charlie's drug-addicted mother more narcotics, Charlie envisions Richard as super villain Doctor Psycho injecting an energy drainer serum in Charlie's trapped mother.

Just as Charlie overhears Doctor Psycho’s plan to destroy his newly made foes, his recently moved in, next-door neighbor and classmate, Denise Proctor, develops a crush on the ten-year-old boy. Even though the feeling is mutual, Charlie isn't sure if he should even acknowledge her presence, afraid Doctor Psycho might hurt her. With the help of a school bus driver, a college drug dealer, and a purple plush toy, Charlie must discover what makes a true hero to defeat Doctor Psycho.

If you wouldn't mind reading it and let me know what you think the specific genre would be I'd appreciate it. Also, you know, critiques on the story.

Thank you!

Chad Kriss

Caitlin (ellven) | 3 comments Hi Kenzie,

Currently seeking a beta reader for a 70k urban fantasy.

Tied to a chair in his shuttered living room isn’t how Rune envisioned the end of a hard day of running magical drugs.

But his sister, Alana, doesn’t care about his expectations. She doesn’t care that he’s hidden his magic since he was born. That the authorities will capture him and siphon it out of his spirit to make magical drugs, or that he’s got another shift running those same drugs for dealers in the city in under an hour.

Alana, the last remnant of his family, leaves her brother trussed up. Rune loses control and explodes said living room into a smoking mess, drawing the attention of every magic hunter on the planet.

Thank Magi, his fire burns through those bindings because Rune’s got to make a run for it. Got to find – and possibly throttle – his dumbass sister for running off to join the rebellion against the Drug Lords.

Trouble is, Rune’s never used his magic, never even tried, and if he doesn’t learn quick, regions will fall from the sky, Alana will die, and his soul will become just another line of powder, snorted through a tube into the nose of a worker almost as anonymous as he was.

Thanks for your time and consideration! I hope to hear from you. :)
