Sloane watched her go, his head tilted slightly. "No. You're not supposed to like me. You're supposed to stay back and leave me be." He mumbled, walking outside and heading home.

Reaching a spot next to the stairwell, Mei opened her case and pulled out her guitar and propped it against the wall as she cleared the case. Wasting no time, she began to strum and sing (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Su0wb0s...) like she usually did this time in the afternoon on Tuesdays and a few passers by threw a coin or two in her case
Sloane walked home. Once he got there, he grabbed an ice pack from the freezer for his jaw and took a seat in front of his Xbox. He waved a controller and just played for a while.
Mei kept singing, even when the cuts on her fingers re opened and bled all the way through the bandages. She needed the money. After an hour or so, Mei had accumulated 40 or so dollars. Going to the bank close by, she got the coins converted to notes and then headed to the gaming store and bought a game. Her brother's birthday was today and she was the only one who ever gave him a present. The left over would go in her savings jar. She was saving so she could nove away from them as soon as possible.
Sloane stayed in his room for a while. Around when Mei was coming home, Sloanes case worker showed up. He met them outside, sitting on the driveway and talking to them.
As she walked home, tired abd lugging her bag and guitar case. She had litterally just stepped foot on the driveway when her brother came running to her and burrying his face in her chest. She smiled and was about to say something to make him smile when she saw he was crying. She dropped everything there, next to the road abd lifted his chin to see his face and almost had a heart attack when she saw the huge bruise on his jaw and split lip. She sat him down there and then and dabbed the blood away.
Sloanes case worker saw his neighbors come outside and frowned. The older lady got up, leaving Sloane on the driveway. She came over to Mei and her brother. "Hey. Are you guys alright?" She asked before introducing herself.
Mei looked up at the lady and dod her best to smile like nothing had happened "Oh yeah we're okay" she lied "he just fell down the stairs" she lied again, so easily. Looking back to the house, she did her best to stay calm. That bastard. She wanted to go and shoot him. He could hit her all he wanted, but as soon as he touched even a hair on her brother's head was when she really got angry.
"Forgive me miss, but that doesn't look like it would happen from falling down a staircase." She said gently. The lady took a card from her purse and held it out to Mei. "I'm a child's services caseworker.." She said. She glanced back at Sloane who was Sitting still on his driveway, biting his lip and looking up at the sky.
Mei took the card silently and then looked back to Sloane. Why did he have a case manager, she wondered before putting the card in her pocket. Just then her stepfather came out of the houe, most likely drunk, and walked down tbe street. Mei softly gestured her brother toward the house "Go insiee and lock the door. Don't answer for anyone" and her brother meekly obeyed. She was going to lovk her stepdad out.
"You can call anytime if you need anything. Or go to him, he can get ahold of me too." She said, nodding to Sloane, unaware if the two knew each other or not. She smiled a bit at Mei before walking back over to Sloane.
She nodded appreciatively and watched her walk back before sitting down in the middle of their driveway until the stars came out, not thinking or moving. Just tuning out to everything around her.
Sloane spoke quietly with his caseworker for a bit. He stayed quiet so Mei wouldn't overhear. Soon they both stood up, Sloane shook her hand, saying goodbye and apologizing about the fight.
Mei wasn't aware of anything around her at all. All she could feel was the cold driveway against her legs and all she could see was the stars. She took her glasses off and looked at the stars and moon with a small smile. She wanted to stay like that forever.
The caseworker then left. Sloane glanced over at Mei for a moment. He then sighed and turned around, walking back inside his house. He let the door close loudly behind him as he headed up to his room.
There was a loud bang of a door closing and that brought her back to reality. Getting up, she picked up her bags and walked inside and to her room before opening the curtains to let in the fresh night air to help her calm down and changed into her pyjamas and washed her face, the foundation gone and now she saw the bruise on her cheek had become more black than blue and she sighed as she touched it and winced.
Sloane went up to his room. He turned his stereo on and the music up loud. His window was partway open so the loud mostly rock music carried outside. He changed into a pair of sweatpants and pulled off his shirt, lying down in his bed.
Mei sat on her bed, doing her homework when she heard rock music from the window. Looking over, she heard it coming from the partially open window directly opposite her, on the other side of the low fence, past a few tree branches. She stopped for a while, listening to it.
Sloane stated laying there on his bed. He sung along with the music, barely able to be heard. He had no clue that Mei could hear him or his music and he didn't really care either.
Mei listened to the soft singing that began and assumed that it was Sloane. She dropped her pencil and sat on the trunk under her window sill and listened closely. She'd never heard the song before.
Sloane continued to sing along with the music. Closing his eyes. The song was Alone by I Prevail. He listened to music So Much when he was at home that he had quite a lot of lyrics memorized.
Mei grabbed a pillow and a blanket and sat there with her laptop, online. Roleplaying here and there and playing multiplayer online. That was when she picked up the card the lady had given her. Looking at it for a while, she decided to visit the website on it.
Sloane kept singing along to each of the different songs that played from his stereo. Eventually, he started to doze off, going from singing to sleepily mumbling along before finally falling asleep. He didn't stay asleep for long though, maybe half an hour before being plagued by nightmares which he was able to wake himself up from.
His singing had eventually lulled her to sleep and she slept contently, arms resting on the open window's sill and head rested peacefully on top with her blanket around her shoulders. That was until she woke with a jolt. She'd had that same nightmare again. It was more a memory than a nightmare because everything had actually happened. She sighed as she remembered she wasn"t next to her father in the emergency room. She was in her room looking out at the stars.
Sloane got up, turning his music off. He picked up his xbox controller, turning the tv on and sitting on his bed by the window. He went to one of his favorite games and debated playing multiplayer or by himself.
Mei looked to her running Xbox, open on the home menu and it just happened to be the same one he was about to play. She sighed and picked up her white controler. She was not getting to sleep any time soon, so she ran it and chose multiplayer. She always did.
Sloane typically played by himself but was bored tonight and wanted something different. So he clicked on multiplayer, waiting for it to load up
She looked at the server. Mei found it was quiter than it usually was and there were a few international players, but one in her reigon. Curious, she sent them a multiplayer request.
Sloane tilted his head, surprised to get a request from a player in his area. But he shrugged and accepted the request, looking at the username to see if he recognized some part of it or something.
Well her username was Mei_1402. The 14 for the date she was born and 02 for Febuary the month. She pushed her hair out of her face as she sat back and watched as the request was excepted and tried to recognise the username.
Sloane tilted his head wondering if it was the Mei next door that he knew. He shrugged, if it was, it wasn't like she'd know it was him with a username of GreyArchangel. He'd come up with that username years ago and had used it since then
She gave up. She knew no one who would use that username. Well just maybe...she shook her head. Mei honestly couldn't see Sloane as the type to like video games like this, especially this one as it had such heavy warfare. Also the chances that they happened to be playing the exact same game at the exact same time were pretty slim.
Sloane yawned softly, glancing at the time. He shrugged. It wasn't sure he even was gonna go to school tomorrow, not wanting to deal with the girls flirting with him and the possibility of some other guy getting upset at him.
Mei definitely couldn't go to school tomorrow. She had to take care of her brother. He was definitely not in the state to go to school. She'd call in sick. She sat back, deciding to only get up when her brother did. At that moment she was leading in kill numbers, but was just behind in her overall score.
Sloane kept playing the game with her. He didn't care that he was behind in kill numbers despite that being a big part of the game. Instead he worked to get more points, knowing he could win the game that way.
She narrowed her eyes and smiled as she realised what he was doing. Hopefully not to late though. She concentrated less on killing and more on infiltrating the base. She'd been number 1 on the national leader board for this game. For 4 hours but it still counted for her.
Sloane kept playing, humming softly to himself. He had played this game for a while and played it a lot, allowing him to learn unique tricks and techniques to score more points. He'd been on like the top 10 of the national leaderboard for quite a while.
Mei's player got shot and Mei swore out loud really loudly before covering her mouth, not wanting to wake the neighbours. She tied her hair up. Now she was going full out. Shooting, collecting their drops, upgrading and repeating.
Sloane jumped, hearing her swear since they both had their windows open. He almost got shot and killed but quickly ducked behind a wall. He kept going with the same strategy, earning points, and only killing if it was absolutely needed
After a few nicks here and there, Mei had fully upgraded every aspect of her character and grinned with an evil glint in her eye "Now to hunt down the bastard" she said to herself before following his character's pointer on the small map in the corner of her screen.
Sloane glanced at the map. Seeing her coming toward him, he moved a bit quicker, trying to find s place where he could ambush her before she even got too close to him.
Mei was contuing to follow wheb a bit off to the right of the route she was following there was a crate. Decidinf to detour abd see what was in it, she went and most likely dissapeared off his range of the map.
Sloane sighed softly as she disappeared from his area. He quickly started to move further toward the base, continuing the mission. He kept checking the map, making sure she couldn't get close to him without his knowing.
Mei got to the crate and what she found in it was a missile launcher. It was perfect. She could get him without even showing on his map. The one downside? Only one missle.
Sloane moved quickly, heading away from where she was so he soon didn't even appear on her map anymore. He kept going, still being cautious of her showing up.
Mej panicked when he didn't appear on her map anymore and groaned before deciding to progress even further into hthe base than she'd already ended up. If she saw him though, she would kill him.
Sloane took a longer path through the base. It was a bit more complicated but there were less people and things standing in the way.
Mei, due to how upgraded she was, stormed the base easily. She had switched to the gun so that she didn't waste the missile.
Sloane kept going, infiltrating the base soon after she did. He quickly moved around inside, having to get a certain goal near the center of the base.
She was soon at the heart of it and right at the winning crate. But she didn't collect it. Mei waited there. She wasn't leaving without blowing his brains out.
