Sandy | 499 comments I got a gift card for a huge second hand book store near where I live. Looking forward to spending a couple of hours on the hunt, armed with a list.

Judith | 559 comments I had a book on the Hebrides by Peter May, concentrating on Lewis and beautifully illustrated by photographs of the lovely scenery to be found in the islands and described so well in his three books that are well worth reading. I know the Hebrides well, we went to them all back in the day and they are even more beautiful than the photographs.

Shera (goodreadscomShera) | 57 comments I gave myself the new Rebus too. I order them every year from England because I'm afraid my friends would get the US version.

Beth Stewart | 644 comments Shera--- what's a US version of Rebus? Does glasgow become Chicago and Edinburgh is St. Louis?

I have discovered that when I order "used in as new condition" from England through Amazon it is much cheaper than buying new in Canada. And the books are just like new! (And I know this is a kindle chat group .... I am a rogue!!)

Beth Stewart | 644 comments I got:
The demon dragonfly & the burning wheel by peter fergus Moore
And
Lady Luck smiles only once by the same author

Not my usual genre of British mystery these are written by a local (thunder bay, Ontario ) author and signed by the author!!!!!

Emma | 112 comments I didn't get any books but I did get a £25 Amazon gift card

Shera (goodreadscomShera) | 57 comments Well, it's almost that bad. Editors change the language not just the spelling. I remember an author at a Mystery convention telling us she had to return her manuscript 3 times because the US editors kept changing "Rugby School" to "rugby school".

I love my Kindle and have just ordered my 3rd. I read British mystery fiction almost exclusively but, sometimes the atmosphere is almost eliminated by editors slashing down to reach what they assume to be the knuckle dragging American readers

It is such a shame it..."

Yes,It's the "lowest common denominator" phenomenon.

Yes but now you can get what you want to read! maybe something a little pricey -- because it's a gift to you!

Juliann Johnson | 93 comments Emma,

I, too, got an Amazon gift card and think I'm going to spring
for a Val MacDermid since they never seem to go down in price
and I'd like a guaranteed good read to begin the New Year.
