I only went by the books I own, not my entire goodreads to-be-read shelf. Also by the "position" on the shelf, so I suppose I did in a way.

Yes, which is why I only went by the books I own to find the middle of the tbr.

I chose this book by working out how many I had on my list on 1/1/2017 ( about 300) and then looking through what was at around the 150 mark. I read another book from there but decided to include it elsewhere , so I chose this instead. So yes, I manipulated the list quite a lot, this might as well be readers choice!
I have almost doubled my TBR shelf in the last year, I started this ( and other) challenges to broaden my reading so I'm happy this has happened. Looking back I have cleared a lot of books I added at least a year or two ago as well as reading new additions.

Now there are 1453, but there were fewer at the time I picked this book.

If I remember correctly, all I did was order it by the date I added the book to my list. This was a book that I really wanted to read, and lucky for me it ended up exactly in the middle.
Is shortening your TBR list one of the reasons you participate in the ATY Challenge?
Not really. If anything, my list has progressively grown bigger since I started doing challenges because I've added so many new books that I want to try. In a way I do though because try to get to some of the books that I've had on my list longest each time I do a challenge.

No I didn't manipulate the list, but the middle changes depending on when I looked at the list given I'm adding and removing books all the time. I few times I checked out the middle and didn't want to read that book (e.g. it was the 3rd in a series and I hadn't read the others) so I didn't choose it. The book chosen would have been different if I choose it right at the beginning of the year when the challenge started.

Yes, doesn't work though as I generally find more books through the year due to the challenge group so it usually gets bigger rather than smaller.

How many books are on your TBR list?
At the time I chose this book, I had 431; it's inched down to 427 over the past week or so.
Did you manipulate your TBR list at all to choose the book from the middle of the list?
Nope! I took the number of books on my TBR list (431), divided it by 2, and got 215.5, so I decided the middle books eligable to be used were 214, 215, and 216. Mindy Kaling's book was #214, and I'd been wanting to read something light in tone, it fit the bill.

It is, but it's one of the tinier reasons. I actually like participating because of the categories that open up me up to more diverse books or books I might not've read otherwise, but for this challenge, I have been trying to fun to only use books I already have on my TBR list, since it stops me from adding far more books than I already need to read (although I doubt my list will ever shorten by much for long!).

Not exactly. I scrolled to the middle of the list, and picked a book I wanted to read during the summer.

I didn't realize that shortening a TBR list was actually possible. I learn about books faster than I can read them all.
regarding shortening your TBR list: I agree, not possible without blatantly just deleting books. I chuckle with the very idea. Did you like Gone Girl?

Yes and no. I keep it in the order added. Then I read books from early in the list to shift better options forward, This book was position 10 of 19 when I started it (dead center of the list).

No. And good thing it isn't, since ATY has the opposite effect.

- Did you manipulate your TBR list at all to choose the book from the middle of the list? The middle of the list is different than the beginning of the year. I checked to see what was currently in the middle and I got lucky because one of the book that I'm doing in a buddy read in another group was in the middle. So I didn't really manipulate it - it just kind of evolved to where I needed to fit this book in. I'm so excited!

I saw how many pages it was and decided to choose a book from the middle two pages. I went for one that I had purchased on a Kindle book sale, since I'm trying to read things I own.

Not really. My TBR has grown a lot since I started doing challenges! I joined to discover new things to read and push myself to read more widely.

Did you manipulate your TBR list at all to choose the book from the middle of the list? No. This book was #205, when I chose the week 9 book to read today. Perfect, because it's a really short book.
Is shortening your TBR list one of the reasons you participate in the ATY Challenge? Not really. In fact, since I began the GR challenge in 2015, I've been exposed to books that fellow readers have enjoyed, prompting me to add books to my list. So you could say my TBR has increased because of the challenge.

no, actually it always increases my TBR, since a lot of my preferred books don't fit the challenges.

How many books are on your TBR list?
Currently 248 on the "Want to Read" shelf - but that doesn't include any of the unread books from this year's plan, or any of the books I'm planning to read next year, as they have their own shelves. I also have a separate shelf for books that are part of a series, but aren't the next in the series for me to read. Everything in total is 394.

No. I moved everything else for the 2017 plan onto its own shelf, which left me with 150 books on my TBR. This was number 75.

No, I waited until this was my final week of the challenge to select a book, thus eliminating all the other possible choices, then halved the remaining list and this is resulted.

No, I do the challenge to select books that I wouldn't normally consider. My TBR list continues to grow...
