Are you planning on reading everything? If so, I can't re..."
You can just pick up and read with the exception of DT. Those you really need to read in order, BUT you do not need to read all of his work that references them, or you are back to reading everything.

Joyland: coming of age and ghost built into the plot.
Salems Lot: classic American vampire
Shining: classic ghost in hotel
Hearts in Atlantis: if you love the 60's this one is for you
11-22-63: just loved this one. And award winner
Bag of bones: kind of a British classic ghost
Dead Zone: one of his best castle rock story
There are just so many to choose from; so best of luck.

1 - the shining
2 - salem's lot
3 - the dead zone
4 - bag of bones
5 - joyland
6 - 11/22/63
All great reads, starting with 3 of kings best early works, one from his middle period and two of his more recent works. You could probably substitute duma key for any of the last 3.

Yep, my mistake The Stand is one of king's very best. Not sure I'd start there though. It's number 8 on my hit top 40 list. But "IT" is #2 and I'm not sure I'd start there either.

Right, Chris I just checked your blog and I see no ill effects from starting with The Stand. Nice Blog BTW.

Thanks, Nick :)
To be honest, I probably wouldn't recommend The Stand to a new King reader. The size and depth could be pretty daunting. Might be easier to start in the shorter works, like Misery or one of the novella collections.

Right, another omission on my part, Chris. Misery is great and I see that it's taught in a lot of writing courses.

Love 'Full Dark,' an introduction to King at his darkest.

The first King book that I ever read is Pet Sematary and it is still one of my faves. I would recommend The Shining, Salem's Lot, Christine, Misery, It, The Stand, Delores Claiborne, 11/22/63. And also the Talisman. You also need to throw in a book of short stories or novellas. I really think that King excels like no other in the short story, novella category.
I think these books represent the different styles of King. Depending upon which of these that you like then more books can be recommended that will feel the same.

The Talisman (other topics)Black House (other topics)

Are you planning on reading everything? If so, I can't recommend publication order enough. If not, what do you like? He is such an eclectic writer, despite being labeled as horror, that many things appeal to many different people.
