When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

I will be rereading this series at the beginning of the year. I have not finished the series despite having all the books! I am excited.

I am totally right there with you Leela. I will have to make sure that I also read the other two books for the trilogy that they suggest you finish before finishing Mortal Instruments.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I just need to read the last book for the mortal instruments. Lol.

Wendy (wmaresca) I have the entire series ready to go still packaged and not opened yet. So perfect, now I can open it it and display them on my, hopefully new bookcases I will be getting. Excited to start the series.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

I am only on the third book and I am planning on finishing the series hopefully soon!

Megan (ReadingRover) | 1232 comments Mod
Been there done that and loved it all the way through the series!!!

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I am gonna be reading the Infernal Devices before I complete the series. Since I am reading her books in publication order.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I am excited to continue reading the series.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

That's how I'm reading them, Lizzie!

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I have not been reading them through publication order. I just decided that I was going to try and read Infernal Devices before continuing Mortal Instruments.

message 12: by Inky (new) - rated it 4 stars

Inky I've read this before on Kindle and loved it but my boyfriend got me the physical book for Christmas because he knew I want to start collecting the series. I'd say that something telling me to read this series. Lol. I've only read this book but I'm seeing it as an incentive to continue the series and get to the other books.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
This is the same for me as well. I am hoping that this will make me want to read these and finish this series.

Roxanne | 727 comments Mod
I loved Infernal Devices! I loved this book and probably the first four in this series. I wasn't blown away by the last one.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I hope this makes me finish the series. I've read the first book in Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices. I haven't got past that in either of those.

Wendy (wmaresca) I have the entire series and haven't read it yet so hopefully this makes me read it.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I have the entire series as well and feel bad that I have not finished the series.

R.J. Abell | 682 comments I read this series a while ago, it was pretty good. I know I've heard mixed reviews, but I loved it all the same.

I haven't started this series yet

R.J. Abell | 682 comments It's been a while, but I remember it being pretty good :)

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I got through the first book kind of rough but part of that was because I watched the movie first then read the book.

message 22: by R.J. (new) - rated it 5 stars

R.J. Abell | 682 comments Ew, that's the worst! I hate watching the movie and then reading the book. I always need to read the book first..I liked the movie and the books, but I've already said that in a different post.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I should not have done it but I did get through the book. I still plan to read more.

message 24: by R.J. (new) - rated it 5 stars

R.J. Abell | 682 comments it happens :)

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
Yeah, I plan to read the next one next month when we are supposed to read it. Maybe if I've got some other people reading with me I'll get through it.

I would say I have a love hate relationship with this series. I hate Clary... She's my least favorite character... But I'm obsessed with Alec and Magnus. They're my current OTP. <3 They're really the main reason why I bought every book by Cassandra Clare and continue to read this series.

message 27: by R.J. (new) - rated it 5 stars

R.J. Abell | 682 comments Really? What makes you not like Clary? I think I remember Magnus being one of my favorite characters.

R.J. wrote: "Really? What makes you not like Clary? I think I remember Magnus being one of my favorite characters."

I feel as Clary just seems so entitled. I don't know who hasn't read this book! So I don't want to spoil it for anyone. So I'll be a little vague about it. But I also feel as though she is so indecisive and feels this need to make a problem involve her even if it doesn't. A lot of times she is making problems worse and she knows this but does it anyways. I don't like female characters that are like this. It boils my blood. BUT, I kind of just push her under the rug and speed read through her parts so I can read about characters I actually like.

hahaha! I'm going to have to keep this in mind when I re-read this series to see if I can see this. Goodness it's been so long since I've read the series...I've burned through so many books since then...the only thing fresh on my mind is the major stuff. I'm stoked about the show coming back.

I have the unpopular opinion of not liking the show either... Omg the more I hear myself, the more of a brat I seem like! I'm sorry!

What's the point in a discussion if all perspectives aren't explored? I have so many unpopular opinions myself ;). I'm sure you'll come across a few in other discussions.

Yes my sister kind of is not speaking to me under I've decided to join her in liking the tv show. Lol.

But that's the beauty of books and shows, and i always try to keep in mind that everyone has different tastes.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
That' is what makes this group amazing. We can all express our opinions and none of us get angry. We try to see it from that person's point of view.

Yes! That's why I asked Leela, because the next time I read the series I want to know if I'll see Clary differently :) and I may have thought the same as you but couldn't remember!

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
After watching Lily Collin's Clary and reading the book I kind of read her that way but I'm hoping that with the time that it has been since that I won't see her that way anymore.

Alyssa (lyssiepop1) | 7 comments It's been so long since I read this series and I stopped at the fourth book the last time. It was so nice to go back to the OG though. It's interesting seeing how you've grown as a person because I remember reading this the first time and being soooo enamored with Jace but this time around I was rooting for Simon! Perhaps it's because I already knew some of the plot, or having a partner who is also my best friend, but it was so fun and interesting to read this again! I remember when the movie came out (awful movie by the way), I bought the Isabelle dress that Hot Topic was selling and drew tunes all over myself to go see it! The world that Cassandra Clare creates is one that I am so in love with. It's such a fun idea that there's a world living right alongside us in one of the biggest cities in the world and we can't even see it!

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
I have to agree with you. I love the idea that she took and ran with. The thought that there could be something living right along side us is amazing. We've always had books with vampires and demons but to have one that has all aspects of everything just makes this one of the best stories you tend to think of when looking at this particular fantasy genre.

That's awesome! I dressed up as princess Laya on a dare once! But what they didn't know was that I looooved it ;).

Wendy (wmaresca) Started reading this afternoon, not to far in but right now Jace is a real jerk.

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
He does seem like a jerk at the beginning of the book like I remember.

Wendy (wmaresca) Ok so I just finished I want to say I didn't see what happened coming but I had a feeling. To say I am not to happy with would be an understatement. I am hoping they find out it isn't true down the road. I will be looking forward to reading the next book next month.

message 48: by Farren (last edited Jan 21, 2017 04:23PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Farren (mmmcookies) Unpopular opinion time but I actually really like the movie. I didn't like it very much the first time I watched it but I love it now. I think I prefer Lily Collins' Clary to book Clary. And show Clary is just the worst. I didn't like the show at first but it has improved. Just the actors playing Clary and Jace suck at this point.

I just finished my reread of the book today. I had forgotten so much that I'm glad I read it again. It's still a 4 star read for me, but I rarely give out 5 stars so that's a great rating. I listened to the audiobooks the first time around and they make Jace sound like much more of a jerk than the book does! I think my favorite will always be Simon. He's just so sweet and helpful and I love that he ends up saving the day when he's just a mundane.

If anyone is interested, those Ollie's stores that have popping up everywhere sell cheap books that were sent there as overstock. I was able to get the new editions of City of Bones and City of Angels with the beautiful metallic covers City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare for $1.99 each. The books they receive are totally random but my friends check frequently and get some really good ones that are always $1-4. I even found the True Blood cookbook for 4 bucks =P

Andrea (booktasticnerd87) | 4512 comments Mod
Oh I love Ollies! I have not had any of those pop up in my books section yet. I do check a lot though because I want the new pretty covers.

I have the ebooks and no space to put physical books but I feel like I must buy them because they are so pretty. I checked book depository a couple days ago and City of Glass was $4 or $5.
