NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments I squealed and giggled and said "Thank you so much" and "I love you!" like 2 million times (maybe 2.5 mil?) and looking back, I should've asked for a kiss on the cheek or something! (DARN YOU ME FROM THE PAST!!)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments But anyways, a FABULOUS summer!! And that same day, I bought 3 books, one of them about Cam <3

message 208: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments Next! This is the story of how I became a gymnast:

So when most girls start gymnastics, they start early on like 2 years old, or most commonly 6

message 209: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments Me however, didnt start until I was 9...why?

So I started in ice-skating. I did it when I was 8 and I was good. My dream was to be the next Michelle Kwan, and I did it for like 2 months. I stopped after one competition and came in 2nd. (Bonus short story: the competiton was in May and it was cold and it was snowing. It felt like winter!...WTFLIP weather?)

message 210: by NerdyJediGymnast (last edited Dec 30, 2016 12:14PM) (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments I stopped because I liked it, but it didn't grab my attention y'know? (that and I hated how cold I was in my leo. Fun fact: my mom made my first competing ice-skating leo...it was artic blue and SHINY!)

message 211: by NerdyJediGymnast (last edited Dec 30, 2016 12:15PM) (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments So once summer hit, I was so hyper and bored and wanted to DO something...

It was too hot to play outside so I was flipping through TV channels when I saw it: the Beijing Olympics. I had ZERO clue what the Olympics were or anything! But the first thing I saw was a girl (whom later I found out was Shawn Johnson) on floor (basically thanks to Shawn Johnson Im in gymnastics, and thanks to later on Gabby Douglas, I want Olympic fame)

message 212: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments At that point, never in my life have I seen ANYONE tumble of flip or do tricks like that. To this day, floor is my favorite :3. I screamed, "MOM!!! MOM LOOK!" She thought somethng was wrong and came in like, "What happened? What did you do?" She saw what it was and was at first, mad that I was screaming like that, then impressed by what she saw. "Mom, I want to do THAT!" I said.

message 213: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments "Gymnastics?" she asked skeptical. "Yeah! I can do it!" I got up, kicked up into a handstand, and fell down 1 second later. My mom was like,"Girl go do that outside!" So I threw on my sandals and called upstairs for my older sister to come with me. She wasnt a gymnast, but she had a full split, could do bridges and such, and is older...Perfect!

message 214: by NerdyJediGymnast (last edited Jan 20, 2017 10:41PM) (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments "Rebecca, please! I want to do gymnastics but I dont know how..can you teach me?" She was 10 at the time and agreed to help, if I cleaned our, then, shared room. I agreed and we begun. It was so hot and we stayed out for an hour. When we came inside, I learned how to hold a handstand. I showed my mom who was impressed. "NOW can I do gymnastics?" I asked. "No, we need to find a school first." I ran to the computer and researched every gym in my city. (Rebecca aint her real name but hey privacy!)

message 215: by NerdyJediGymnast (last edited Dec 29, 2016 12:07PM) (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments I did this every day for a month until I found the one I liked best, which is my home gym (I wont say where...privacy people XD).

When I found the said gym
(lets call it Jungle Gym...NOT the real name but I really dont want to give out my information like that), I ran and told my mom, who told my dad, who told me that I'd have to wait.

message 216: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments When I turned 9 that fall, I was so ready to start! But I didnt until April...2 months before a meet...YIKES

On April 11th, I walked into the gym feeling jittery. It smelled different and I loved it. I was so ready to go! Over the months, I had learned how to do many basics on floor, and a duct taped line on my carpet (a pretend balance beam), but I never did any REAL gymnastics.

message 217: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments I started in the lower Girls Gymnastics, then the next fall, did the next lower level status, Novice. I was 10. Then, my coaches noticed how good I was and moved me to Preteam, which is basically Level 2 and a 1/2. I did that for year, then went to Level 3 at age 11. Level 3 is where the real competiton team starts at my gym, and I was so scared to start the season. I came in third all around my first meet.

message 218: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments That same year, in the spring, I won the State Championships for my state!! I quickly moved up to Level 4, where I excelled even more, winning almost every single meet. I was 12. The optional team coaches (Optionals is Level 6-Olympics) noticed me and asked me to join their practices until it was decided I would skip 5 and 6 and go straight to Level 7.

message 219: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments But then, that summer, I broke my left arm on uneven bars, on both bones, directly below my wrist where my grips wristband ends. I had felt slight pain on one of the bones but it would go away at a certain point so I ignored it. Basically, I was already competing on a slightly broken arm, but one bars, I broke the other one in a bigger break.

The doctor told me I would be out for 1 year, since it was almost broken all the way through. But me being stubborn :), once I got out the hospital and got a cast on, I worked out at Jungle Gym, doing ab conditioning and legs. (Bonus short story, they gave me 2 doses of a drug and I felt DRUNK. When we were going home, I almost vomited and was extremely dizzy.)

message 220: by NerdyJediGymnast (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments After 2 months of drinking 6 glasses of milk every day and switching casts and wearing a brace, the doctor said I was clear: I could do small things like cartwheels, splits, handstands, whatever. No hard floor work, vault, no tumbling on beam NO BARS. I went back to Jungle Gym feelin' good! By this time I missed some of the competing season, so they put me in Level 6 (later I would do 1 Level 5 meet to qualify, and I did) and in December, slowly but surely, I started tumbling again and vaulting and beam. I didnt do much bars.

message 221: by NerdyJediGymnast (last edited Dec 30, 2016 10:12AM) (new)

NerdyJediGymnast | 15013 comments This happened 2015-2016 btw. Finally, 2 weeks before my meet, I gathered up my courage and did a full out bar routine. Everyone there, coaches, gymnasts, parents watching in the window, they was cheering for me and at the end of the routine, I cried in the gym for the first time, besides obviously breaking my arm. (I dont cry EVER at my gym. I dont cry in general unless I genuinely feelthe need to). My optional coach told me I was the strongest and most talented gymnast he's met in a long time. I cried even more XD.

My Level 6 season was strong. Now Im Level 7/8 gymnast fully recovered. I dont completly have my freakin' full twist, but its coming!

connie Nerdy I know you don't know me but let me introduce myself ..name is Connie and I am a grandma who has an interesting bit to tell you ...I actually met Shawn Johnson many many years ago. I am originally from California and she was visiting my city so I had a chance to meet her and she is very sweet.I did gymnastics when I was younger. I remember doing a cartwheel straight into a split for the first time and everyone just gasped as that had never been done before in our class..but then again I am almost 60 so that was a very long time ago. Keep pursing your dreams and writing this wonderful journal.
