Interesting idea and highly possible. Sadly, we'll never know. BUT, no matter what, it had to be suicide, right? Since nobody's at the party except himself, any murder is a suicide. I wonder how that would shake out in a court of law.

I thought of that right away, and I was wondering if it was going to turn out that he killed himself on purpose because that's necessary to keep the timeline consistent, but (view spoiler) I abandoned the theory that he killed himself. The story is better if it's the ultimate whodunit, where the murderer, victim and detective are the same person, but if it's suicide, then it's not murder.

The beginning at the hotel party was interesting but it started to get confusing. It felt like a really long exposition. Now that the narrator is going somewhere and doing something instead of just witnessing things, it feels like the story has gotten going and I'm really excited to find out what happens.
Obviously I haven't finished the book, but the one thing that seemed like an obvious possibility to me but which the main character never seemed to address was that (view spoiler)[Sober 40 could have killed himself. The gunshot wound entered under his chin and exited behind his ear, seen commonly in suicide (hide spoiler)].
