Do you try to overlap books between challenges? For example, if there is a book that fits multiple prompts between challenges do you use that same book for all your challenges or do you read different books for each challenge?

It depends on the challenge. I do AtY, Popsugar and the mini Rejects challenge with no overlap with each other. I do use books from any of those challenges to fill my side challenges, such as the Around the World Challenge or the Around the US challenge. I added some Bingo card type challenges and a Sherlock Homes Challenge for next year; those will overlap with my main 3 as well.

Charity (faeryrebel78) | 552 comments I overlap most of my challenges. The only ones I don't overlap are the ATY and the rejects challenge.

Marilyn (marilyn357) | 33 comments I am doing 4 different challenges in 2016 with NO book used more than once either within a challenge or between challenges. I'm also planning at least 4 challenges for 2017 again with NO repeats.

Samantha | 112 comments Wow Marilyn... you must be a super speedy reader! For the Goodreads main challenge I try and do 50 books a year (~a book a week) and I don't think I've managed to complete it once.

Zaz | 2969 comments Yes, I overlap, but it depends the challenges. I won't overlap AtY with the Rejects for example, but can use books from AtY for the Dystopia reading challenge or the r/fantasy bingo. Some categories don't interest me at all, checking several of them with the same book improves my reading mood.

Kirsten (kmcripn) For me every challenge is different. What I won't do is use the same book twice on any given challenge.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I don't overlap at all since my goal is to read more and try different books.

message 9: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments The past two years, I haven't. I'm doing it next year though, as I've taken on a bunch of smaller challenges that I'll happily overlap books for.

When I started with challenges back in 2015, I wanted to read more, and now I do. Now I am using the challenges more to fulfil my innate desire to tick boxes, and also to guide my reading a little bit & help me to find books that are off my own personal beaten path.

Samantha | 112 comments Rachel - So do you try to do a lot of challenges at once or one at a time? I think if I did multiple challenges with a limited time line it would be really hard not to repeat.

I do a few challenge all at once, so I can mix and match and read what I feel like. I only do challenges that have specific prompts (not ones that are "read x number of books within the year"). Usually I give myself from January 1 to December 31 for the one or two main challenges I pick (ATY and PopSugar), and I sometimes extend the timeline for others (BookRiot, for example).

Saara (lamiena) | 86 comments Okay, possibly dumb question... what is the Rejects challenge?

To answer the topic: I do AtY and Laura's challenge (my own thing with my best friend) without overlap, others I would prefer also to have unique titles but won't worry about it too much. :)

The rejects challenge is a self-made list of categories that some of us made using categories that were rejected in the AtY polls last year. Some people are trying to do the entire list, others are picking and choosing categories they like from all the topics. Myself, I did all the rejects related to characters.

Alright, thanks! I thought it might be something of the sort, but alas, I am an eternal self-doubter and couldn't find any clear indication. :D May need to pick and mix one for myself.

I overlap the prompts if they're identical and then a few of my challenges can be overlapped with others. I'm doing the Around the World challenge and then a general challenge to read all of Stephen King's works. So both of those can be fit into any of the other challenges. Other than that, I don't overlap. I think I realistically need to stop adding challenges since I'm really only managing to finish the ATY challenge and then a handful of other books.

message 16: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I am with Amy and Jody. I don't overlap AtY and PopSugar, but overlap all my other challenges. Like Jody, I've taken on a lot of smaller challenges because I love the feeling of accomplishment in checking off tasks. Since I'm mostly just don't the small ones to see if I can do it, I don't mind the overlap.

Samantha | 112 comments Interesting take, everyone! This is the only challenge that I've signed up for with a "deadline, besides the GR main page 2017 challenge which I intend to sign up for.

I have found myself struggling to even read 50 books year after year but I'm hoping by pre-selecting books I don't get into my usual funk of not knowing what to read. Maybe next year I'll be more ambitious and take on PopSugar!

lol I have everything preplanned and STILL go into 'what to read next' slumps. That's usually when I pick something completely off list and then cram it into a challenge category later. Basically, that happens every week so my final list is WAY different than my beginning of year list. I'm weird like that lol

message 19: by Krista (new)

Krista I have debated this with myself as well and the main theme I'm getting from this and my other challenge threads is "Set your own rules and do what you want".

I have decided that for the Book Riot Read Harder I'm going to complete with 24 unique books. I did the 2015 and 2016 challenges in 2016 and ended up with 24 and 23 books respectively. My personal choice I'm not going to "double dip" for 2017.

But I am going to allow myself to double dip between Read Harder and Around the Year, and within AtY itself.

On the flip side I know there are some folks in the Read Harder threads that take it as a personal challenge to intentionally find a book that fits multiple categories. I saw for the 2017 challengeThe Color Purple fits a whopping SIX of the 24 topics.
